Day 1

In your own space, talk about your Happy Place—the things that give you joy, calms you or keeps you sane. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

So I have been through Some Bullshit since the year started*, and apparently these days I cope with stuff by daydreaming/planning to build furniture with ever increasing details. In this case, I got though: chairs (a set of four), a cat tree, book case(s), a scratch post, a TV bench, a light table and a caket/jewelry box as a gift for a friend.

* I'm fine. It's about as over as gonna get and I have shiny new trust issues to show for it, but whatevs, it's not like I wasn't already a paranoid little monsterfucker anyway

I have also been listening to MCR's entire discography. I keep getting the chorus of Kill all your friends ('Cause we all wanna party when the funeral ends / And we all get together when we bury our friends) stuck in my head.

Given that it's 2019, Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys is on at least once a day. Planetary (GO!) is basically on repeat. Because Fuck You, that's why.

What's your most re-read book?

Hard to say. I don't do a lot of rereading. I barely do any reading these days.

I think probably my collected edition of the first five comics of Joann Sfar's Le Chat du Rabbin (The Rabbi's Cat). It's a slice of life, magical realism comic set in 1930s Algers (with occasional trips to other places), where a rabbi's cat gains the power of speech. It's absolutely DELIGHTFUL. It's very... cozy? Kind? Like a hug in comic form? Not sure how to put it, but I love it. I find it extremely grounding and so tend to reread all or part of it when in certain uneasy emotional states.

If you could change one aspect in a canon you love what would it be?

GIVE ME A SCARLET WITCH MOVIE MCU YOU COWARDS

Have you ever been to Germany or Austria? If yes how did you like it?

I have taken some brief school trips to Germany, but have never been to Austria. I enjoyed Köln a lot! I do not remember with any certainty what other cities we went to, oops. I would very much enjoy going back to Köln, see the Christmas market and do the cathedral again. Also I had this AMAZING hot chocolate made from white chocolate, but good luck finding that place again, hahaha

Do you find that the language you read a poem in influences what you think of it and how it affects you?

As much as possible, I read things in their language of origin and no other, so I don't really feel qualified to answer this.

Although, funnily enough, when listening to the sung version of Anjela Duval's Karantez Vro (a poem in Breton, English translation by yours truly) the parts that most resonated with me, even without knowing what they meant are the same ones that resonate with me most, knowing the meaning. (To wit: "Ar morioù bras, ar Broioù pell"/"deep seas and faraway lands", "Maezioù ken kaer va Breizh-Izel!"/"The beautiful countrysides of my Lower Brittany." and "Va Bro, va Yezh ha va Frankiz!"/"My country, my language and my freedom.")

What's one aspect of politics in France that you like/dislike?

BOY DO I DISLIKE THE RAMPANT FASCISM

I also vastly dislike the, idk what to call it, Saviour narrative? It's like we're always waiting for the next de Gaulle, the next Jeanne d'Arc to show up and save us.
dhampyresa: (Default)
1. What do you think about when you're swimming?

Not a whole lot, which is kind of the point. I'm always counting lanes, but other than that I will occasionally brainstorm plot ideas but mostly I recite poems to myself. Currently I'm working on learning Brassens' Supplique pour être enterré à la plage de Sète -- I find it quite comforting, especially "Et qu'au moins, si ses vers valent mieux que les miens, / Mon cimetière soit plus marin que le sien" ("And at least, if his verses are better than mine" / "My graveyard more than his be marine").

2. If you could have one celebrity narrate your life, who would you choose?

That is not something I've ever considered before, I have to admit. Dessa? My life would be greatly improved by some sick rhymes.

3. What superpower would you least want to be stuck with?

Telepathy. Everyone should be allowed some privacy.

4. What did you want to be when you grew up as a child? Did you stick with that goal or did your interests change as you got older?

I wanted to be a dinosaur. I'm still working on it.

5. What story have you always wanted to write?

Good question. I don't think there's a story I've always wanted to write. I do have one story that's Mine as in if I could only write one, it would have to be that one. It's the one I call "the desert novel" around these parts. I don't know. One day, the better part of a decade ago, it dropped almost fully formed into my head -- we're talking, main characters, concept, worldbuilding, plot, ending and a handful of specific scenes, nincluding the ending. It's like I'm an archeologist at a dig and it's lying there, waiting for me to uncover it and do it justice. I've written a first draft of it, but it's not There yet.

From [personal profile] eller

1. What's the last movie you watched, and how did you like it?

I'm not sure.

I think the last movie I watched in theater was Haifaa al-Mansour's Mary Shelley (2017). As the title suggests, it is a biopic of Mary Shelley. I found it quite interesting and I liked the photography a lot.

If not, it was Desiree Akhavan's The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018) which is a movie about a young queer girl being sent to conversation therapy in the 90s. It is fucking brutal, but it's very well done.

2. Do you listen to music while you draw?

Yes and no. I tend not to listen to music when I do my daily evening drawing because I do those last minute before going to bed (or post last minute in a few cases, as I've sat up in bed several times going FUCK MY DRAWING I FORGOT). Otherwise, yes I listen to music when I draw. But then I'm pretty much always listening to music.

3. Sunlight or moonlight?

Moonlight.

4. What's more important to you in a story, the characters or the plot?

Both. Which isn't a cop-out, let me explain. I can like the characters all I want, if the plot doesn't grab me/moves too slow I will be bored and drop it (ex: Sense8). If the plot is interesting but I'm not attached to the characters, I will watch it but not come back (ex: Game of Thrones, which I dropped between seasons).

5. Do you have a favorite poem?

I have a poetry tag! Of the poems in it, I like Anjela Duval's Karantez Vro and José-Maria de Heredia's La Trebbia best.

I like to learn and recite poetry to myself while swimming and I return most often to Georges Brassens' Supplique pour être enterré sur la plage de Sète (Plea to buried on the beach of Sète), which (a) I should try my hand at translating one day and (b) is technically a song, I GUESS, but if Bob Dylan can be fucking literature, then BRASSENS IS GODDAMN POETRY.

From [personal profile] yhlee
1. What is your favorite saying/expression from French?

"Âme damnée". It translates to "cursed/dmaned soul" and is basically a fancy way of saying "top henchperson". Darth Vader is Palpatine's âme damnée, for example.

2. What cat color(s) do you like best?

All cats are best cats.

3. Which art medium makes you happiest?

Watercolours. I find them very soothing. But basically I love art a lot? Drawing and painting/pastelling/etc pretty much always makes me happy. And all medium have different "feels" so sometimes I am in a pastel mood and sometimes in an oil painting mood (it is a trap, I fail at oil forever). But yeah, whenever I don't know what medium to use and/or what something simple/relaxing, it's watercolours all the way.

4. If you could visit any one city, all expenses paid, in the winter, where would you go?

Any current city? Because if not, CARTHAGE HERE I COME. As for current cities, I think I'd like to go back to Seoul. I had an amazing time there.

5. Favorite Phoenician figure (historical or mythological)?

Elissa | Dido. I've talked about why at length here, but the short version is: she's so smart? And kind? and I LOVE HER. She was done mega dirty by the Aeneid though, like whoa.

Runner up mythological figure is Tanith. (There are a few sources that interpret Dido as an avatar of Tanith.) I find Tanith fucking fascinating. She's a goddess of fertility, war and FUCK YOU, (look at her symbol. This is not the symbol of a goddess who has any fucks to give).

Historical runner up is Hannibal Barca -- much tl;dr abounds. Short version: He's smart and that thing with him crossing the Alps was pretty baller. Also Cannae is a fucking work of art.

The problem with LJ/DW: we all think we are so close, but really, we know nothing about each other. So I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away. Then post this in your journal and find out what people don't know about you.

Icon meme

Via [personal profile] kore:
Reply to this post with "PORGS!" and I will pick three of your icons for you to talk about in your own journal, and then keep the meme going by making this offer on your post.

Years ago there was a meme going around about things that happened on people's birthday. Mine is September 30 and on that day in 2004, the first pictures of a giant squid in the wild were taken.

I made this icon at some point during the 2013 yuletide-related events leading up to this post. GOOD TIMES. I keep it for various reasons, but mostly because it makes me happy.

The icon itself is the coat-of-arms of the city of Paris and the keywords "fluctuat nec mergitur" (Tossed by the waves but never sunk) is the motto of the city. I'm Parisian (I am other things, as well, but I am this, also). I have Feelings about this city, but aside from the tl;dr on the Paris Commune, I mostly use this for RL stuff.

(I made all three of the above, fyi.)

IT ME

Jan. 5th, 2017 09:03 pm
dhampyresa: (Default)
A brief intro post, following this friending meme.

1. I'm French. Mostly this shows up when I talk about the stuff I read in French and my complete inability to wish luck on anyone.

2. I currently have a most terrible case of the Star Wars, so that's where most of my fannish energy is going these days. Both here and in general, I tend to be very into gen and plot, but I'll ship pretty much anything and everything. My favourite thing is friendship fic and I really like taking odd/ridiculous concepts and making them work.

3. I write.[archiveofourown.org profile] sevenofspade is my Ao3 username. I also write original fiction novels (sf/f).

4. I mod two fannish exchanges ([community profile] nightonficmountain and [community profile] history_exchange ). I have ideas for other fannish challenges.

5. I love history A LOT. My longest running OTP is either Hannibal Barca/Scipio Africanus (Second Punic War) or Yoko Tsuno/Khany (French comics). Currently I'm thinking a lot about the Paris Commune.

6. I like comics a lot. I use comics to mean the medium, not just superheroes, although do like those too.

7. Folklore and mythology are awesome. (I feel like I should point out upfront that I grew up with a different Arthurian tradition than the Anglophone one.)

8. I draw. I rarely post about it, but I do it daily.

Yup. That's me.

dhampyresa: (Default)
Let's start 2017 off in a positive way with a Pay It Forward meme. The first 6 people to comment (and more if I can manage it) will receive a surprise from me at some point in 2017 - anything from a book, a ticket, something home-grown or made, a postcard, absolutely any surprise! It will happen when the mood comes over me and I find something that I believe would suit you and make you happy.

(If you don't like surprises and would rather have something off a wishlist and/or some warning, let me know in your comment. The goal is to make you happy.)

If you can, post this in your own journal and pay it forward. Let's do more kind and loving things for each other in 2017, without any reason other than to make each other smile and show that we think of each other.

Via [personal profile] musesfool,

Give me a potential title and I tell you about the story I would write for it.
dhampyresa: (Default)
I had a post I've been meaning to write for a while and I thought today might be when I write it, but my war wound is acting up -- okay so it's the other knee, which it usually is, so I'm starting to think that when I busted my knee, lo these many years ago when crossing the Alps to march on Rome, I actually fixed that knee.

Have a meme I saw around tumblr instead.

Guys, I’m sure I have a reputation somewhere in this fandom: So what is it?

Writing meme? Writing meme!

40 questions (that's as many as four tens) )

(I kind of want to answer all of these, lmao.)

dhampyresa: (Default)
Give me one or more prompts about any fandom whatsoever and I will write you fic for it, based on fandom osmosis, like I did with Dragon Age that one time.

Obviously the idea would to pick a fandom I don't know, for maximum Not An Expert hilarity, but do whatever you want.

dhampyresa: (Default)
Day 11

In your own space, make a list of at least 3 things that you like about yourself. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

1. I write pretty well, if I do say so myself. I've got proper verbs and nounds and whatnots. (Also, plots.)
2. I'm a pretty good artist, not that you'd necessarily know it from this journal.
3. I think my presence in fandom is more positive than negative. I am ~A Force For Good~.

Day 12

What makes you fannish? And by that we mean, what is it about a tv show/movie/book/band/podcast/etc that takes you from, "Yeah, I like that," to "I need MOAR!!!" Is it a character? A plotline? The pretty? Subtext that’s just screaming to be acknowledged?

In your own space, tell us what it is that gets you to cross that line into fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I think what leads to me being fannish is having some sort of fanfiction hook. As much as I love something, if I have no idea what kind of story I could write about it, I'm not fannish. I might read fic, but I wouldn't call myself fannish.

My ideas for fic tend to the close to canon (canon-compliant and canon-divergent both). Some of it is also pretty crack-y, but my mind pretty much never jumps to complete AUs right away.

Day 13

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Last three fics I commented on should do it, yes?

The Story of Finn (25928 words) by LullabyKnell

Fandom: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Original Characters, Original Female Character(s), Original Male Character(s), Stormtrooper Character(s)
Additional Tags: Finn is the Hero of the Stormtroopers, Stormtrooper Culture, Stormtroopers are people, Storytelling, Rumors, Rebellion, Families of Choice, Spoilers
Summary: The story they hear is that of FN-2187.

He's a defector – a traitor to the First Order. He's not the first, nor will he be the last, and the First Order expects to retrieve him and end him quickly.

But that's not what happens.

The only thing Stormtroopers own are stories.

Outside the Lines (2355 words) by BethCGPhoenix
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Hamilton - Miranda
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Thomas Jefferson, Aaron Burr, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton
Additional Tags: Yuletide 2015, Yuletide Treat, Metafiction, Musicals
Summary: Burr’s always been a little creepy, in Thomas’s so-humble opinion. It’s not just because he’d rather answer a song with a smile instead of a rhyme; he’s always got this look on his face like he knows something you don’t, like he’s looking straight past you to a future you. Those times Washington starts going on about history having its eyes on you, while Burr’s back there practically boring holes in his skull? Yeah.

Guess that’s what the Cabinet gets for hanging around with a narrator, though. They’re all like that.

the ultimate test of cerebral fitness (4000 words) by psychomachia
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Chess (Board Game)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Summary: As I lay broken and bleeding on the battlefield, I began to wonder about the meaning of it all. I mean, what are we actually fighting for? Are we always destined to lose in some cosmic game? Why do the sides have to be different colors? Why can't the Biskups just be able to hook up for once without the world ending?

Which reminds me that I need to finish commenting on yuletide fics and do a rec post.

Day 14

In your own space, share your love for something fannish: a trope, cliché, kink, motif, theme, format, or fandom.

Exchanges! I love exchanges a whole lot. (You can tell because I run two: [community profile] nightonficmountain and[community profile] history_exchange . They'll both be running this year, fyi.)

Sometimes I feel like exchanges are fandom in its purest form: you're creating something for the sole purpose of making someone happy. (If you're familiar with Agent of Asgard, I was a gigantic sap about this all over Lies told by firelight.)

Idk. I just like making people happy.

Day 15

In your own space, talk about what you're taking away from this challenge. Did you learn something? Did you interact with new people? Or did you try out different fandoms or formats or relationships? What's changed between Day 1 and Day 15 of this challenge? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

It reminded me I need to get better at commenting on fic. It's not specifically related to this challenge, but I have to say I hate when people start to tell other people How To Do FandomTM. Just ship and let ship, ffs.

dhampyresa: (Default)
Day 6

In your own space, create your own challenge. What’s something you want to see more people doing in fandom? Is there something you’ve tried that you think other people would enjoy if they gave it a go? Dare your friends to try it out, and have fun with it. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Write treats! I think people should try writing treats in exchanges, it's lots of fun and you get to make someone happy. Win/win!

Day 7

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Hey, remember that time we got canon confirmation Loki in Agent of Asgard wrote fic?
Terrible slash

What "terrible slash" entails is still a mystery, though. Any guesses?

Day 08

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

'Sup?

Day 09

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I need to do a proper post about my goals for this year and how I managed with my goals for last year, but in the mean time, have some fandom related goals.
  • Post 1+ fic a month
  • Post some fics without (external) deadlines
  • Try writing fic for some new fandoms
  • Try some new canons
  • Post at least one piece of fanart
Seems doable.

Day 10
In your own space, post a rec for fannish and/or creative resources and spaces. Tell us where you go to dig up canon facts for your fandom, or where you get all the juicy details about your favorite ship. Where do you like to hang out and squee like a squeeing thing? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

[community profile] go_write is going to accept new members soon. Come and join us, it's cozy over there.

dhampyresa: (Default)
I forgot it was Wednesday until about 10 minutes ago. (Today's been weird. Not so much "my time perception is fucked" weird as "this is utterly unexpected, but fine, I'll deal with it" weird.)

Have some Fandom Snowflake instead.

Day 03

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I never know how to pick with these, so have three fics chosen almost at random.

As it turned out, what "Let's do yuletide" meant was "Let's spend the end of the world telling stories about stories".

This one's the most recent fic on my Ao3.

The Oracles on the Delphi Express (10154 words) by sevenofspade
Chapters: 5/5
Fandom: Percy Jackson and the Olympians - Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson and the Olympians & Related Fandoms - All Media Types
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Annabeth Chase, Luke Castellan, Rachel Elizabeth Dare, Silena Beauregard, Thalia Grace
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, roadtrip
Summary: Annabeth says "yes" where she might once have said "no" and goes on a road trip with Luke. Things go downhill from there.

And this one's the longest.

Day 4

In your own space, create a fanwork. Make a drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. Arts and crafts. Draft a critical essay about a particular media. Put together a picspam or a fanmix. Write a review of a Broadway show, a movie, a concert, a poetry reading, a museum trip, a you-should-be-listening-to-this-band essay. Compose some limericks, haikus, free-form poetry, 5-word stories. Document a particular bit of real person canon. Take some pictures. Draw a stick-figure comic. Create something. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I'm gonna steal a page from [personal profile] egelantier's book: "when in doubt, commentfic!" So leave me a prompt in any fandom, including ones I don't know and I will write you a thing. A probably hilariously wrong thing if I'm writing by osmosis.

Day 5

Leave feedback for a fanwork. Or multiple fanworks. It can be as simple as I liked this to a detailed list of all the things you loved about the fanwork. The key is to leave some sort of feedback.

If you've already left feedback in the course of a previous challenge, it totally counts. But you're free to leave more feedback.

Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!" If you feel so inclined, leave a link to the fanwork you left feedback for so others can check it out.

I commented on a bunch of yuletide fic earlier in the week, but there's still fic I need to get back to. THAT SAID. I am setting a goal for myself to comment on at least a fic a week and post about in this journal so I can be held accountable.

Out of curiosity, where does everyone get their end of year memes? Link me to the ones you did.
