IT ME

Jan. 5th, 2017 09:03 pm
dhampyresa: (Default)
A brief intro post, following this friending meme.

1. I'm French. Mostly this shows up when I talk about the stuff I read in French and my complete inability to wish luck on anyone.

2. I currently have a most terrible case of the Star Wars, so that's where most of my fannish energy is going these days. Both here and in general, I tend to be very into gen and plot, but I'll ship pretty much anything and everything. My favourite thing is friendship fic and I really like taking odd/ridiculous concepts and making them work.

3. I write.[archiveofourown.org profile] sevenofspade is my Ao3 username. I also write original fiction novels (sf/f).

4. I mod two fannish exchanges ([community profile] nightonficmountain and [community profile] history_exchange ). I have ideas for other fannish challenges.

5. I love history A LOT. My longest running OTP is either Hannibal Barca/Scipio Africanus (Second Punic War) or Yoko Tsuno/Khany (French comics). Currently I'm thinking a lot about the Paris Commune.

6. I like comics a lot. I use comics to mean the medium, not just superheroes, although do like those too.

7. Folklore and mythology are awesome. (I feel like I should point out upfront that I grew up with a different Arthurian tradition than the Anglophone one.)

8. I draw. I rarely post about it, but I do it daily.

Yup. That's me.

Let's start 2017 off in a positive way with a Pay It Forward meme. The first 6 people to comment (and more if I can manage it) will receive a surprise from me at some point in 2017 - anything from a book, a ticket, something home-grown or made, a postcard, absolutely any surprise! It will happen when the mood comes over me and I find something that I believe would suit you and make you happy.

(If you don't like surprises and would rather have something off a wishlist and/or some warning, let me know in your comment. The goal is to make you happy.)

If you can, post this in your own journal and pay it forward. Let's do more kind and loving things for each other in 2017, without any reason other than to make each other smile and show that we think of each other.

A meme

dhampyresa: (Default)
Via [personal profile] musesfool,

Give me a potential title and I tell you about the story I would write for it.
dhampyresa: (Default)
I had a post I've been meaning to write for a while and I thought today might be when I write it, but my war wound is acting up -- okay so it's the other knee, which it usually is, so I'm starting to think that when I busted my knee, lo these many years ago when crossing the Alps to march on Rome, I actually fixed that knee.

Have a meme I saw around tumblr instead.

Guys, I’m sure I have a reputation somewhere in this fandom: So what is it?
dhampyresa: (This is my life)
Via [personal profile] muccamukk .

(My fic is over here on archiveofourown.)

1. How did you come up with the title to [insert fic]?
2. Any of your stories inspired by personal experience?
3. What character do you identify with most?
4. Is there a song or a playlist to associate with [insert fic]?
5. If you wrote a sequel to [insert fic], what would it be about?
6. Care to share a favorite hurt/comfort fic?
7. Care to share a favorite crack fic?
8. How would you describe your style?
9. Do you have a guilty pleasure in fic (reading or writing)?
10. Write or describe an alternative ending to [insert fic].
11. What's the angstiest idea you've ever come up with?
12. What's the weirdest AU you've ever come up with?
13. Got any premises on the back burner that you'd care to share?
14. Is there a fic you wish someone else would write (or finish) for you?
15. How do you begin a story--with the plot, or the characters?

17. Do you have any discarded scenes/storylines/projects?
18. Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?
19. Any fandom tropes you can't resist?
20. Any fandom tropes you can't stand?

26. Major character death--do you ever write/read it? Is there a character whose death you can't tolerate?
dhampyresa: (MY BIRTHDAY HAS SQUID)
Are poissons d'avril ("April fishes") a thing in any non-France places? What about the bells of Easter (cloches de Pâques)?

I have more than 0 but less than 97 works in the Bad Bang V collection. Feel free to try and guess which one(s) are mine.

Writing meme? Writing meme!

40 questions (that's as many as four tens) )

(I kind of want to answer all of these, lmao.)

dhampyresa: (Default)
Give me one or more prompts about any fandom whatsoever and I will write you fic for it, based on fandom osmosis, like I did with Dragon Age that one time.

Obviously the idea would to pick a fandom I don't know, for maximum Not An Expert hilarity, but do whatever you want.

dhampyresa: (Default)
Day 11

In your own space, make a list of at least 3 things that you like about yourself. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

1. I write pretty well, if I do say so myself. I've got proper verbs and nounds and whatnots. (Also, plots.)
2. I'm a pretty good artist, not that you'd necessarily know it from this journal.
3. I think my presence in fandom is more positive than negative. I am ~A Force For Good~.

Day 12

What makes you fannish? And by that we mean, what is it about a tv show/movie/book/band/podcast/etc that takes you from, "Yeah, I like that," to "I need MOAR!!!" Is it a character? A plotline? The pretty? Subtext that’s just screaming to be acknowledged?

In your own space, tell us what it is that gets you to cross that line into fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I think what leads to me being fannish is having some sort of fanfiction hook. As much as I love something, if I have no idea what kind of story I could write about it, I'm not fannish. I might read fic, but I wouldn't call myself fannish.

My ideas for fic tend to the close to canon (canon-compliant and canon-divergent both). Some of it is also pretty crack-y, but my mind pretty much never jumps to complete AUs right away.

Day 13

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Last three fics I commented on should do it, yes?

The Story of Finn (25928 words) by LullabyKnell
Chapters: 7/7
Fandom: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Original Characters, Original Female Character(s), Original Male Character(s), Stormtrooper Character(s)
Additional Tags: Finn is the Hero of the Stormtroopers, Stormtrooper Culture, Stormtroopers are people, Storytelling, Rumors, Rebellion, Families of Choice, Spoilers
Summary: The story they hear is that of FN-2187.

He's a defector – a traitor to the First Order. He's not the first, nor will he be the last, and the First Order expects to retrieve him and end him quickly.

But that's not what happens.

The only thing Stormtroopers own are stories.

Outside the Lines (2355 words) by BethCGPhoenix
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Hamilton - Miranda
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Thomas Jefferson, Aaron Burr, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton
Additional Tags: Yuletide 2015, Yuletide Treat, Metafiction, Musicals
Summary: Burr’s always been a little creepy, in Thomas’s so-humble opinion. It’s not just because he’d rather answer a song with a smile instead of a rhyme; he’s always got this look on his face like he knows something you don’t, like he’s looking straight past you to a future you. Those times Washington starts going on about history having its eyes on you, while Burr’s back there practically boring holes in his skull? Yeah.

Guess that’s what the Cabinet gets for hanging around with a narrator, though. They’re all like that.

the ultimate test of cerebral fitness (4000 words) by psychomachia
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Chess (Board Game)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Summary: As I lay broken and bleeding on the battlefield, I began to wonder about the meaning of it all. I mean, what are we actually fighting for? Are we always destined to lose in some cosmic game? Why do the sides have to be different colors? Why can't the Biskups just be able to hook up for once without the world ending?

Which reminds me that I need to finish commenting on yuletide fics and do a rec post.

Day 14

In your own space, share your love for something fannish: a trope, cliché, kink, motif, theme, format, or fandom.

Exchanges! I love exchanges a whole lot. (You can tell because I run two: [community profile] nightonficmountain and[community profile] history_exchange . They'll both be running this year, fyi.)

Sometimes I feel like exchanges are fandom in its purest form: you're creating something for the sole purpose of making someone happy. (If you're familiar with Agent of Asgard, I was a gigantic sap about this all over Lies told by firelight.)

Idk. I just like making people happy.

Day 15

In your own space, talk about what you're taking away from this challenge. Did you learn something? Did you interact with new people? Or did you try out different fandoms or formats or relationships? What's changed between Day 1 and Day 15 of this challenge? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

It reminded me I need to get better at commenting on fic. It's not specifically related to this challenge, but I have to say I hate when people start to tell other people How To Do FandomTM. Just ship and let ship, ffs.

dhampyresa: (Default)
Day 6

In your own space, create your own challenge. What’s something you want to see more people doing in fandom? Is there something you’ve tried that you think other people would enjoy if they gave it a go? Dare your friends to try it out, and have fun with it. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Write treats! I think people should try writing treats in exchanges, it's lots of fun and you get to make someone happy. Win/win!

Day 7

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Hey, remember that time we got canon confirmation Loki in Agent of Asgard wrote fic?
Terrible slash

What "terrible slash" entails is still a mystery, though. Any guesses?

Day 08

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

'Sup?

Day 09

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I need to do a proper post about my goals for this year and how I managed with my goals for last year, but in the mean time, have some fandom related goals.
  • Post 1+ fic a month
  • Post some fics without (external) deadlines
  • Try writing fic for some new fandoms
  • Try some new canons
  • Post at least one piece of fanart
Seems doable.

Day 10
In your own space, post a rec for fannish and/or creative resources and spaces. Tell us where you go to dig up canon facts for your fandom, or where you get all the juicy details about your favorite ship. Where do you like to hang out and squee like a squeeing thing? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

[community profile] go_write is going to accept new members soon. Come and join us, it's cozy over there.

dhampyresa: (Default)
I forgot it was Wednesday until about 10 minutes ago. (Today's been weird. Not so much "my time perception is fucked" weird as "this is utterly unexpected, but fine, I'll deal with it" weird.)

Have some Fandom Snowflake instead.

Day 03

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I never know how to pick with these, so have three fics chosen almost at random.

Twelve Days of Mad Science (6456 words) by sevenofspade
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: X-Club (Comics)
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Kavita Rao, James Bradley | Dr Nemesis
Additional Tags: Crack Treated Seriously
Summary: Prank wars at the Office of Pure Empirical Science!

The title of this one if thematically relevant to today's date.

Lies told by firelight (1533 words) by sevenofspade
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Loki: Agent of Asgard
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Loki (Agent of Asgard), Verity Willis
Additional Tags: Post-Canon
Summary: As it turned out, what Loki had meant when he'd said "I need a break. So... Let's skip ahead a bit" was "Let's do yuletide".
As it turned out, what "Let's do yuletide" meant was "Let's spend the end of the world telling stories about stories".

This one's the most recent fic on my Ao3.

The Oracles on the Delphi Express (10154 words) by sevenofspade
Chapters: 5/5
Fandom: Percy Jackson and the Olympians - Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson and the Olympians & Related Fandoms - All Media Types
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Annabeth Chase, Luke Castellan, Rachel Elizabeth Dare, Silena Beauregard, Thalia Grace
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, roadtrip
Summary: Annabeth says "yes" where she might once have said "no" and goes on a road trip with Luke. Things go downhill from there.

And this one's the longest.

Day 4

In your own space, create a fanwork. Make a drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. Arts and crafts. Draft a critical essay about a particular media. Put together a picspam or a fanmix. Write a review of a Broadway show, a movie, a concert, a poetry reading, a museum trip, a you-should-be-listening-to-this-band essay. Compose some limericks, haikus, free-form poetry, 5-word stories. Document a particular bit of real person canon. Take some pictures. Draw a stick-figure comic. Create something. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I'm gonna steal a page from [personal profile] egelantier's book: "when in doubt, commentfic!" So leave me a prompt in any fandom, including ones I don't know and I will write you a thing. A probably hilariously wrong thing if I'm writing by osmosis.

Day 5

Leave feedback for a fanwork. Or multiple fanworks. It can be as simple as I liked this to a detailed list of all the things you loved about the fanwork. The key is to leave some sort of feedback.

If you've already left feedback in the course of a previous challenge, it totally counts. But you're free to leave more feedback.

Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!" If you feel so inclined, leave a link to the fanwork you left feedback for so others can check it out.

I commented on a bunch of yuletide fic earlier in the week, but there's still fic I need to get back to. THAT SAID. I am setting a goal for myself to comment on at least a fic a week and post about in this journal so I can be held accountable.

Out of curiosity, where does everyone get their end of year memes? Link me to the ones you did.
dhampyresa: (Default)
Before I start forgetting which side of the Dec 31/Jan 1 those last few ones fall on. Thoughts to be forthcoming.

Chronicles of Legion 1-3
Darkness Over Cannae
Dr Fate 1-4
D'un monde à l'autre (La Quête d'Ewilan, tome 1)
Fragile Things,
Le Jardin des silences
Magnus Chase and the Sword of Asgard
Prince of Cats
Saints 1
Sandman Overture 1-6
Secret Wars 1-7 (still ongoing)
Spider-Gwen v1 1-5
Spider-Gwen v2 001
The Infinite Loop 1
The Red Pyramid
The Spire 1-5
Toil and Trouble 1-3
Tumulte à Rome

Those I might forget:
13 Devil Street
Freaks Squeele 7: A move & Z movie (did I ever talk about Freaks Squeele at all at any point?)
L'arabe du futur 2
Le papyrus de César
Lucifer (Vertigo comic)
Chats d'oeuvre

I cannot shake the feeling I am forgetting a bunch of stuff, however, but anything else I will count as read in 2016, yes, sirree bob.

Day 2

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

1. Fanworks of any of my stuff. (My ao3)
2. Somebody to kick me and remind me to post fic regularly even without deadlines
3. NO MORE SHIP WARS OR CHARACTER BASHING OR PEOPLE BEHAVING LIKE DICKS IN GENERAL

dhampyresa: (Parker!)
I feel like it would be a lot easier to enjoy seeing my brother again after far too long if both of us weren't feeling especially hermit-y lately. So instead I am staying up waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too late and answering comments (mostly on Ao3) and reading yuletide fic.

We managed to go to the cinema to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens (IT WAS CERTAINLY A STAR WARS MOVIE -- it's basically very Star Wars, from plot to worldbuilding to scene composition even, in places. Also that one dude looks nothing like either of his parents /end Star Wars thoughts) and we saw some Leverage (re-re-re-re-re-re-(re?)-watch) and Shawshank Redemption (I always cry at either the "Brooks was here" scene or the opera scene -- this time it was the opera scene -- and man, that one last shot is fucking perfect, just the silence and the wide open sea as the camera pans out) so that was good. I just wish we could do more, because he's leaving tomorrow :(

Also he asked me if what I was watching was any good to which I replied "Nah. It's the latest BBC Sherlock, but at least I don't need to use my brain, which is good because I'm in no state to". I feel like this is maybe -- just maybe -- a flaw when talking about a show about Sherlock Holmes, but what do I know and it's not like it's exactly a new flaw. (Also Hooper was really hot, wowza.) So I recced him The Librarians, instead.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner

Day 01

In your own space, talk about why you are doing the Fandom Snowflake Challenge? What drew you to it as a participant? What do you hope to accomplish by doing these challenges? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I enjoyed doing this challenge last year, it was tons of fun.

New people

Sep. 9th, 2015 10:37 pm
dhampyresa: (Default)
There's a new friending meme in town and I've added a few people independantly recently, so here's an introductory post of sorts.

I'm [archiveofourown.org profile] sevenofspade on Ao3. My taste in fic, both writing and reading, tends to gen and unlikely friendships.

I'm French. I mostly notice this when I'm twisting myself into pretzels trying to convey "Good luck" without saying those words or when I wait until after to wish people happy birthdays if it's a choice between before and after. (I was raised to see doing both of these as extremely rude.) You're probably most likely to notice when I talk about whatever recent thing I read in French.

I try my best to do weekly "Reading Wednesday" posts, in which I go tl;dr about books and/or comics.

At irregular intervals, I will also go massively tl;dr about random bits of History. Usually, these are either on French history (I'm thinking of doing one on the Paris Commune, but it might take a while) or the Second Punic War, but not only.

The ship of my heart of hearts is Hannibal Barca/Scipio Africanus. They have their own tag, but any post is liable to take a tangent into Romans and/or Carthaginians at any time.

The fandom of my heart is probably mythology/folklore. I love seeing different interpretations of various myths and legends, but I will never ever understand why the wider non-breton Internet seems to think Morgane is the villain, when Merlin is right there. (On a related note, curse you, [personal profile] lunik_the_bard , for getting me into the habit of saluting magpies.)

My all-time favourite trope is enemies who care about each other, in all its many awesome variations.

(I like parenthesis*.)

And that's pretty much it, really.

*But I try to steer clear of footnotes.

dhampyresa: (OM NOM NOM)
What can I say. I like memes. (And my brain is a weird place, especially lately.)

1.

I currently have 39 works archived at the AO3. Pick a number from 1 (the most recent) to 39 (the first thing I posted there), and I'll tell you three things I currently like about it.

2.

Pick any passage of 500 words or less from any fanfic I’ve written, and stick that selection in the comments. I will then give you the equivalent of a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what’s going on in the character’s heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you’d expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

My fic is here on archiveofourown and here on dreamwidth. Most of it overlaps, but not everything.

3.

Give me a topic or fandom and get a fanmix for it.

4.

Give me the title of a story I've never written and feedback telling me what you liked best about it, and I will tell you any or all of the following:
the first sentence, the last sentence, the thing that made me want to write it, my soundtrack/theme song for writing, the biggest problem I had while writing it, why it almost never got posted, the scene that hit the cutting room floor but that I wish I'd been able to salvage, and/or something else that I want readers to know.

Or you might just get the story. Who knows?

5.

Pick any of the fics from my fic from archiveofourown and I'll tell you my soundtrack for it.

(Bonus: ♥♥♥ U R AWESOME: A LOVE MEME ♥♥♥ // my thread. Page topping on page 6!)
dhampyresa: (Default)
What did you finish reading

L'aigle et le safran, by Sen: (You can buy it online or read it online. I'm reading the paper version, but the online version should normally be the same.) I LOVED THIS! It's been ages since I read something in French that gripped me this much. My only regret is that I wish the political aspect of the plot had gotten a little more spotlight, because a couple of things seemed to come (almost) out of nowhere. I would also say that I regret the "on opposite sides of the war" thing didn't last as long as it did, but I have Official Authorisation From The Artist TM to bug the author at JapanExpo to convince her to write something with more of that dynamic.

Also, the little bonus comic at the end was lovely.

I have also read and/or skimmed through about 15 volumes of La Geste des Chevaliers-Dragons and I am still conflicted over how I feel about the series. On the one hand, I'm not a big fan of the premise (only female virgins can kill dragons), but on the other, some of the stories told within that framework are excellent. I like volume 6 (Par-delà les montagnes) parts of which reminds me of the Valladolid debate, and several others whose names I can't remember right now (except two, but they deserve their own paragraphs).

Cut for extended discussion of volumes 11 and 12 (Toutes les mille et une lunes & Ellys) )

So far the only one I own is volume 11, Toutes les mille et une lunes, but I think I'm going to buy volume 12, Ellys, maybe. I just wish the cover looked like the inside art, because the inside art is gorgeous. The cover... is not.

Currently reading

Still stalled on The Art of War, The Kick-Ass Writer, La véritable histoire de Carthage et de Hannibal, Les Fleurs du Mal, Métronome and Ghosts of Cannae.

Made some progress on Rome's Revolution!

Mostly i'm excited because I've started reading The Grass-King's Concubine! I'm on page 10, though so there's not much I can say, except that I'm liking it so far and want to find out more about the Other Place the protagonist saw.

What are you reading next? (aka the to-read list)

As I said last time, now that I've finished L'aigle et le safran, I'm going to start reading Métronome again. On the other hand, I really want to finish Rome's Revolution as soon as possible.

To-read list )

Additions to the list (*looks at ever growing list to read* *looks at diminshing time to read* *sobs*): The next two Masqué books (I forgot to add those earlier) and the Romanitas trilogy, by Sophia Mc Dougall, on a rec from [personal profile] dolorosa_12 .

dhampyresa: (SCIENCE SMASH)
I am slowly making my way through answering every comment I might have missed lately (and not so lately), so if you get a surprise reply to something, this is why.

Fic Georg Strange Aeons is an outlier and should not have been counted. It's the only one of my fics that has over 1k hits and has about 1k more hits than the next fic with most fics. I am not sure what up with that. Anyway, one of my fic broke 1k hits! PARTY TIME!

A lot of those fics are exchange fics. 9/10 of the fics by hits and 7/10 of the fics by kudos.

I still think Strange Aeons is one of the best fics I've written.

I'm surprised by some of the fics on these lists. 19 steps to restore someone's stolen property is not my best work, Prom Night is written for a tiny fandom and there's a grand total of three (3!) Hannibal/Scipio fics in the top ten by kudos.

Mostly I'm laughing because of how low my hits and kudos are compared to netgirl's. Comes with writing in small fandoms. On the other hand, I don't care. I write in small fandoms, so what? I'm proud of what I write.

The original plan for today was to tell you all my thoughts about the first season of HBO's Rome, but my brain is currently fried by lasers, so you can look forward to that tomorrow.

A meme, via [personal profile] snickfic . First lines of fics. I'm only posting the first lines this week and will do the last lines next week, just so I can include The Oracles on the Delphi Express for that one too. I'm also only posting fics written since last time.

Speaking of The Oracles on the Delphi Express! I posted the chapter-before-last today, in which Thalia Grace shows up and THINGS ESCALATE QUICKLY at the end there.
