What I'm most looking forward to, regarding this year's Dracula Daily, is the British monarch dying when van Helsing gets to England.

In a repeat of last year's following sequence of events:
Van Helsing: /arrived septembre 7
Liz 2: /died septembre 8

COINCIDENCE? I think not.

Entry title taken from Bram Stoker's Dracula: CHAPTER VII: CUTTING FROM “THE DAILYGRAPH,” 8 AUGUST (Pasted in Mina Murray’s Journal.): LOG OF THE “DEMETER.”: 4 August.

I've said it before and it remains true: The log of The Demeter is my favourite horror short story of all time.

I am hopeful because of two things:
(1) they went full Orlock with the monster design
(2) THE DRAGON SEAL!!!!! They did (at least some amount of) The Research TM: Vlad Dracula was called that because his father was called Vlad Dracul due to belonging to the Order of the Dragon.

Also, August 11 is the date of the first time Dracula feeds on Lucy (㇏(•̀ᵥᵥ•́)ノ)

I mentioned recently to someone IRL that I gave blood regularly and was asked why i did. This happens a lot of the time someone new hears about it. Even after years and many such questions, I continue to be absolutely baffled by that question. I do it because it's the right thing to do. Why do they think I'm doing it? So they'll give me the blood and I'll make blood sausage out of it? For the free pain aux raisins? And every time, because the answer is so fucking obvious and I can't understand why they'd ask, it gets my hackles up and I get defensive. I don't get it. Why do people ask? Isn't it obvious?

-

Finished my Dracula reread I'd started with the 2022 Dracula Daily. Yes, I'm very late *shrug emoji* and yes I finished it during the blood donation. What can I say, I am a comedy genious.

It was really lovely to see all the various reactions to the actual book from people who'd never read it before. People falling in love with everyone! Our friend Jonathan being a sweetheart! Recognising how kind Lucy is! Seeing Mina for the MVP she is! Realising Renfield is a hero and Seward is a fucking creep, actually! Becoming willing to fistfight Alan Moore in a Denny's parking lot for the honour of the Harkers' love! Being both surprised and delighted by Quincey Morris even existing! Being thoroughly creeped out by the log of The Demeter! Realising the book is Good, Actually!

I posted my liveundeadblogging of the book in a group chat, might see if I can gather some of the most interesting and/or funny or whatever bits from there to post on here.

The log of The Demeter remains my favourite horror short story of all time. « But I am captain, and I must not leave my ship. » CHILLS, every goddamn time.

The edition I was reading also had illustrations by Becky Cloonan, whose art I love and greatly admire, and looking at those closely made me appreciate her artistry even more and also helped give me a better idea of where I want my art to go, so to speak. Not that I can put it into words, lol

Before I go to sleep and slumber for another eighteen hundred years, I ask you all to play the part of Paris in deciding who of Lucy Westenra, Quincey Morris or RM Renfield deserves the golden apple inscribed with "To the most ill-served by adaptations of Dracula".

I've finally figured out why I cannot rid myself of the notion that Abraham van Helsing (of Dracula fame) is Jewish, despite the fact that the text is fairly clear on him not being Jewish.

I first read Dracula in French. Which means it was before I established my "read books in their original language if possible, if not whatever translation is most easily accessible" rule. I was 12 or so when I came up with that rule. I also remember the library I borrowed the book from, which gives me the hint that it was after the age of 10.

I first read Le chat du rabbin ("The rabbi's cat") at about 11. The (semi-)titular rabbi is named Abraham.

I'm guessing I just conflated the two.

In fairness, if "Abraham Van Helsing, M. D., D. Ph., D. Lit., etc., etc." (cf Chapter IX) were Jewish, he would be a rabbi. Search your heart. You know it to be true.

I am currently reading a book where a main character's last name is Harker (Reese Harker from Rory Power's Wilder Girls) and another book where a main character's given name is Mina (the titular protagonist of Axie Oh's The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea). My books ship Mina/Jonathan Harker too??????

Also, remember how I said two and a half months ago "I have one think going for me right now and that is that I am up to date with Dracula Daily"? Yeah so no. I am over a month behind (on August 17).

(Entry title taken from today's Dracula Daily. Would have gone with "Wake up babes, new gender just dropped" as a reference to "I am alone in the castle with those awful women. Faugh! Mina is a woman, and there is nought in common. They are devils of the Pit!" (the new gender being, of course, "devil of the Pit") if that had anything at all to do with the contents of this entry. I'm mentioning this because I am very proud of this stupid meme-esque joke and I refuse to have [personal profile] schneefink  be the only recipient of the worst bits of my liveundeadblogging of this stupid book. Look. I have one think going for me right now and that is that I am up to date with Dracula Daily.)

Happy 100th birthday to F. W. Murnau's Nosferatu and vampires being killed by sunlight!
dhampyresa: (Quit killing people)
Earlier today I was listening to a podcast about Dracula* and it reminded me that I never talked about the three things I think are really important about Dracula and yet are left out of almost all adaptations.

(\(*vv*)/) )

*Dracula ou les Dents du désir which was quite good and interesting although it did contain the boiling hot take of "protestants write vampires more than catholics because their church does not provide enough blood and drama". I really want to see the research on that, no lie.
dhampyresa: (that's high profile)
I finished watching The Strain! And I found one of my copies of Dracula, so it's time to talk about vampires!

I found out The Strain existed from this S1 review by The Maven of the Eventide, vampire critic extraordinaire. (Aside: I'm a big fan of her work.)

The TV show is based on a series of books co-written by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, who I've never heard of. I have not read these books. I have no idea how involved either where with the show and though "Guillermo del Toro does vampires" was a big selling point for me I don't really care all that much.

This is very much a horror show. The vampires are pretty gross! They're a worm-like parasite that shoots out of their hosts. Also in many ways they are close to zombies. There is also occasional jumpscares and medical gore, especially in the first season(s).

Bad, meh, good )

In conclusion: I enjoyed it, also Dutch & Setrakian made the best team and it's a shape their team up was mostly in the timeskip. I would have watched an entire season of that.

Bleh?

I made the apparently colossal mistake of leaving the country some weeks ago, given that I have been sick pretty much ever since. Did you know you can have all non-eye holes in your face blocked up at the same time? This has... very much interfered with my "becoming a cat caretaker" plans, sadly.

I have occupied my time by watching The Strain (TV) which I picked up because of course I'm going to watch Guillermo del Toro does vampires-as-biological-plague. Being sick has basically shut down all my critical skills so I have basically been enjoying it on the level of "lololololol she molotoved him IN THE FACE" or "gross. me likey" or "yasssssssss yeet the asshole down the elevator shaft!" or "HAAAAAAAAAAA! damn that was a good jump scare" or "told you she had scurvy!" (i like to backseat diagnose, ok). I have about half a season left but now I am starting to have thoughts about like pacing and worldbuilding and whatnot (so i guess i'm not sick anymore) and okay probably I would not have enjoyed this as much had I not watched while sick? But also I miss enjoying things on such a basic level. Idk it's been a long time since I just enjoyed something without any overthinking.

I have also finished a first draft of a 25pages or so comic, now to like check pacing and stuff, which I have no idea how to do. OH WELL.

Still sick. However, I am somewhat cheered by the knowledge that Murnau's Nosferatu is available on ARTE's website for the next six months or so. It is an excellent movie and the best adaptation of Dracula ever put to film.

These comics were originally published in French, then translated and published in English at a later date.

What did you finish reading?

Chronicles of Legion 1-3, by Fabien Nury (scenario), Mathieu Lauffray, Mario Alberti, Zhang Xiaoyu and Tirso Cons (all four on art): ALL VLAD ALL THE TIME BODY HORROR VAMPIRES )

The Infinite Loop 1 + 2, by Pierrick Colinet (writing) and Elsa Charretier (art): Timetravelling lesbians )

What are you reading now?

Lots of stuff! I really want to talk about the conclusion for Secret Wars and Le Déchronologue (OMG IT IS SO AMAZING SERIOUSLY Y'ALL SO GOOD), but that's wait until I'm done with this 2015 recap. List broken down so I can do something else with my day(s).

Up next for the recaps are:

What are you reading next?

Not sure. At some point I should add the boo, recs I got from fandomstocking to the to-read list. I need to work on reducing my to-read list, seriously.

For [personal profile] hokuton_punch . (I'm sorry I forgot about the talking meme for a while there. All posts forthcoming, I swear.)

I have a whole historical tl;dr post about Mehmed, Radu and Vlad, as well as some more talk about the time period (15th century Wallachia/Ottoman Empire)/what Vlad and Mehmed might be like without Radu in this reading wednesday post (under La croisade des Carpathes).

Long story short: Radu cel Frumos is the youngest brother to Vlad the Impaler. As children they were sent as hostages to the Ottoman Empire, where they met Mehmed. Despite a rocky start (RADU STABBED HIM AND RAN UP A TREE), Radu and Mehmed fall in love. Then they go to war against Vlad, somewhere in there Constantinople becomes Istanbul and biological warfare is invented.

Here's the bit I have to confess that I know less about Mehmed and Radu than I do about Vlad, because Vlad being "Dracula" was my in into this part of history, but I'll try my best to talk some more about Mehmed and Radu anyway.

A thing I've seen coming up over and over again in fiction about the period, mostly in regards to Vlad -- because Vlad is the one that's had the most fiction written about him, because "Dracula" -- but occasionally in regards to Radu as well, is that they were sexually abused as children while with the Ottomans. (Looking at you Helsing, looking at you Chronicles of Legion*, etc.) As far as I can tell from primary sources there's no evidence of this. So unless I missed something, a bunch of authors just decided to add this. Because I guess being torn away from your family and held hostage against your country's nominal freedom is not a tragic enough backstory (so let's add some shitty, xenophobic clichés).

At least a few of these work actually conflate Murad and Mehmed (for those keeping score at home: Murad is Mehmed's father), in which case I can see why 'Radu gets into a relationship with the Sultan' could get really creepy. On the other hand, while I'm not saying there wasn't any power imbalance in the Mehmed/Radu relationship -- because there was -- the actual age difference is only about five years and sources seem to point at the relationship being Radu's idea, past that initial STABBED HIM AND RAN UP A TREE incident.

I don't think the Mehmed/Radu relationship was as straightforward as "they were in ~love" or "Mehmed pressured Radu into it". Most notably it's hard to tell how Radu felt both on account of how there aren't that many sources and how if Radu had any reservations about it he sure as hell wasn't gonna say anything. What I'm pretty confident about is that Mehmed, at least, really loved Radu. Look. Mehmed was married four times and he had a harem yet his relationship with Radu is a constant for years.

But let's take a step back from the personal and look at the political for a moment.

I don't think it'd be much of a surprise to tell you that religious wars were all the rage in the Balkans in the 15th century. Christendom hates the Ottomans because they're Muslims, the Ottomans hate Christendom because it's not, the Orthodox hate the Catholics who hate the Orthodox (and prettymuch everyone hates on the Jews, big sursprise there). It's basically a clusterfuck/powderkeg of proto-nationalistic sentiment, xenophobia and religious fanaticism. In other words: if people aren't killing each other left and right, it's because veryone's already dead.

Mehmed conquering Constantinople in 1453 does nothing to help matters, obviously. But 1463 is when it gets interesting.

In 1463, Mehmed publishes an edict that reads "I, sultan Mehmet, inform the entire world that those who posses these imperial edicts, the Bosnia Fransiscans, are in my good graces and do hereby command: let nobody bother or disturb neither those mentioned nor their churches. Let them dwell in peace in my empire. And let those who have become refugees be allowed to do so and be safe. Let them return and let them settle in their monasteries without fear in all countries of my empire". It's not the first time Mehmed's tried to calm down religious tensions in his empire (there are sources that go back at least to the fall of Constantinople), but it's the first time he's made it official. I would be very very surprised if Radu had nothing to with any of this.

In 1462, Radu gets to become voivode of Wallachia by taking the title from Vlad, with Ottoman backing. If getting into a relationship with Mehmed was political gamble, it's one that paid off. (But he could have ran away to Vlad and Vlad would have taken him in -- for sure before the Night Attack, and maybe even after -- and he didn't.)

The other explanation for Radu's loyalty to the Ottomans is Stockholm Syndrome and/or the Ottoman devshirme brainwashing. Radu is five years old when he gets to the Ottoma court. Children taken by the devshirme are usually six years old -- then they get brainwashed into loyal Ottoman janissaries. (The Ottoman Empire is really good at making janissaries.) That Radu end up as Janissary commander would lend weight to this.

Rau might have loved Mehmed too. After all, Vlad was there, at the beginning, and I find it very hard to believe Vlad wouldn't burn down Earth and Heaven if he thought he needed to to protect his brother. (See for example how he treated the boyards who tortured and murderd his brother Mircea.) Vlad never attacked Mehmed personally, though. Even during the Night Attack, where Vlad conducted the reconnaissance HIMSELF, Mehmed wasn't killed.

In all likelihood, Mehmed did love Radu, but Radu's feelings for him were a complicated mess of love, Stockholm syndrome and political gambling. We'll never know for sure, but it sure is interesting.

*I'm actually posting this now, before I do a review of Chronicles of Legion, because Chronicles of Legion is basically ALL VLAD AND RADU ALL THE TIME (+ body horror and vampires).

dhampyresa: (This is my life)
I've been reccing things to friends recently and I hate to let long-ish recs go unshared, so here you go.

Stargate SG1 (This is a TV show.)

THE COOLEST THING ABOUT STARGATE SG1 IS SAM CARTER OMG SHE'S AMAZING I WANT TO BE HER WHEN I GROW UP

One of my favourite things about SG1 is Ba'al being a dick -- he's such an asshole, but he's so entertaining to watch. I really love Vala, because she's so so great (you know how you love tricksters? Vala scratches that itch for me.) I love that they have female doctors who are fucking amazing at their jobs but allowed to have lives beyond it. (Ngl, I really enjoy when the team goes off base.)

I love the way it plays with myth and can get anything it want wrong because ALIENS! And I love that EVERYONE gets to be aliens: Egyptians gods? Aliens! Greek gods? Aliens! Norse gods? (Other) aliens! The Fae? (Other other) aliens! Arthuriana? (Yet another kind of) aliens! (Speaking of which, the last two seasons of SG1 is almost the entirety of English-langauge media dealing with Arthuriana that doesn't send my skin crawling.)

I love that a big theme of the series is freedom and not believeing wholesale in what religion tells you (but you can still find valid things in religion/spirituality. For example, there's a subplot at some point over Teal'c getting to practice Kelno'reem again even though he doesn't need to and how that makes him feel better. There's Tomin's entire arc. There's Daniel Ascension thing). Daniel Jackson's Revolving Door on Death and how even the characters acknowledge it is hilarious to me.

I like the sense of continuity in it. I like the feeling of found family the team gives me. I grew up on this show; it means a lot to me.

I'm not saying it doesn't have failings, I'm just saying I don't care. There 200+ episodes and although I have watched all of them at least two times, you don't have to. There's lots of lists of shortened watching order or watch-for-this-character lists. Sam, Teal'c and Vala are my favourite from the team (although Vala comes in S9/10) and I'm very fond of all the Asgards and Bra'tac outside the team. And like I said Ba'al is a very entertaining asshole.

French SFF (this wasn't so much a rec as a tangent on a point that I ended up cutting, but I do rec both of these with all my heart. Fantômette is a book series; Yoko Tsuno is a comics series.)

Fantômette is a Parisian vigilante of the no-superpowers super-detective kind. She's eighteen, her archnemesis is Le Masque d'Argent (think Doctor Doom) and she has zero patience for his bullshit. She's smart, she's kind and that one time she got TO GO TO SPACE YES. (You can tell this made a huge impression on me.) The books were for the most part published from the 60s to the 80s (a couple were published in the 2000s) and have been in print ever since. There are comics and a cartoon, too.

Yoko Tsuno is Belgian electrical engineer of Japanese-Chinese descent and she is also smart and kind and brave. Her many adventures include aliens on Earth, aliens in space, robots on Earth, robots in space, timetravel (via two different sort of means) and so much more. Growing up I was pretty sure her and Khâny were married and although they're not, as of the latest volume Khâny has confessed to Yoko that she wanted her child to look like Yoko, so make of that what you will.

Day Men (This is a comic series.)

Okay, so Day Men is about this dude David Reid, who is the Day Man for a vampire family. He's basically their enforcer during day time; he's human, so he gets to move around in daylight, which is a real good thing, because the vampires in this verse can't go out in the sun without bursting into flames (and if they fall asleep during the day, they're basically so much dead weight). Things go to hell rather rapidly, as the tenuous peace between the two vampire families in the US comes to an end and they declare war on each other. David, meanwhile, is stuck in the middle and trying to make right by everyone (even random folks caught in the crossfire) all while trying to figure out what is up with this fang trade business... (Also, I really enjoy the David and Casey friendship. There are a lot of interesting and interestingly messed-up relationships in this, but this one is not.)

A big draw of the series for me is the art. For one thing, the artist is the same throughout (and does the covers as far as I can tell) which tends to be pretty rare in North American comics. This contributes to giving the whole story an unified, coherent look. Plus, it's good art. It's clean and dynamic, while striking a good balance between realistic and stylised. I also enjoy the ligne claire aspects of it (/comics nerd). The composition is good, so is the colouring. Like, I know I've said it was pretty already, but it is pretty and I enjoy it a lot. I like that the characters have very distinctive visual identities, from Azalea's all white litheness to Lera's angry punk get-up, passing through David's sharp suits and Casey's more business casual attire. The fact that they all have different body types is also a great help with that. It doesn't hurt that a lot of the cast is attractive (and there's equal opportunity fanservice).

*shoves in general direction* This stuff, I like it.

dhampyresa: (Quit killing people)
I am here to talk about the clusterfuck that is the Vlad Tepes/Mehmed the Conqueror/Radu cel Frumos relationship.

I hope you will forgive the informal tone of this and any possible mistakes, because it's not my area of expertise (for a given value of expertise), but I will try my best to explain why this period of Wallachian/Ottoman histoy is super interesting!

Said period being the 15th century )

So there you have it. This is what Wallachia/the Ottoman Empire looked like in the 15th century.

And now I will go meet with some friends and then see Mad Max:Fury Road in theaters for the fifth time.
