Dear Worldbuilder
Jan. 28th, 2019 10:30 pmThank you for writing for me! I'm sure whatever you write me will be wonderful.
Feel free to poke around this journal or my Ao3 account (username:
sevenofspade ) if you want to. My letters tag is here.
I have the following Do Not Wants: allegory/metaphor of real world politics, character death, child abuse, dysphoria, incest, people losing things important to them, porn, rape, unrequested setting-change AUs (unrequested canon-divergent AUs are fine and very welcome), the Arthurian mythos and toxic living arrangements, be that family or roomates. When these are canon, please don't focus on them. Thank you.
On the other hand, there are a lot of things I do want. Here’s a partial list. (I obviously don’t expect you to stick all of these in one story, that would be impossible.)
( General likes )
Feel free to take prompts in whichever direction you like! And if none of my prompts work for you, then write whatever you want -- I'll be happy with anything.

Dec. 6th, 2018 12:01 amAs an aside to yesterday's post, I mentionned MCU Sorcerer Supreme Wanda Maximoff. I realised that there was no way I would ever see that unless someone drew it and that seemed unlikely.
But then I realised. I can draw!
( So I drew )
What do you think? MCU Wanda: MCR fan or nah?

[EDIT OCTOBER 25: added prompts.]
Carthaginian Historical RPF
Any of: Dido | Elissa (Carthaginian Historical RPF), Hannibal Barca (Carthaginian Historical RPF), Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus Maior (Carthaginian Historical RPF), Sophonisba (Carthaginian Historical RPF)
I ship Hannibal/Scipio most, but I could be convinced by any combination of the characters. Friendship fics are also amazing! Appearances by Tanith very welcome.
Prompts:
- Hannibal fulfilling Dido's revenge! What if Hannibal marched on Rome?
- PUNIC! AT THE DISCO (listen. I love puns and a Pun-ic war would be amazing)
- Scipio/Sophonisba arranged marriage
- Dido convincing Scipio not to march on Carthage
- Dido and Sophonisba, advising each other in their hour(s) of need
- Family moments: Scpio and his daughter, Hannibal and his siblings, Sophonisba and her father, Dido and her sister...
- Aemilia/Hannibal/Scipio
- Dido telling Aeneas to go fuck himself, because seriously, fuck that guy
Eferum Series - Andrea K. Höst
Kendall Stockton, Sukata Illuma
I ship it so much! They are the cutest monster-hunting lesbians and I love Kendall's determination to free Sukata's people. I shipped from the moment in the first book where they were looking at stars together.
Prompts:
- First date! First date uninterrupted by monsters!
- magic lessons!
- Role reversal! Kendall the glass golem, Sukata the feral mage
- mystery solving
- more interactions with the Emperor because that guy's devotion to his people would be interesting to contrast with the other two's dedication to theirs
- an AU where the villains (either) won or never lost
- an AU swapping them with Rennyn and her beau
- STARGAZING
Marvel Secret Wars Battleworlds
Valeria Richards | Head of the Foundation, Victor von Doom | God-Emperor Doom
They have the best and weirdest relationship in this. Also the science in Battleworld must be really weird and I wish to know more about the worldbuilding (can be literal worldbuilding, but doesn't have to be).
Prompts:
- the founding of the Foundation
- what's Valeria's opinion on her uncle being the sun?
- Valeria and Strange working together
- Experiments on Doom stuff / god particles
- what if the ark doesn't get open?
- CSI: BATTLEWORLD
- how does Doom feel being the only one in his family who remembers a time before Battleworld?
- are there alternate Dooms and/or Valerias running around?
Powerless (TV 2017)
Beatriz da Costa (Powerless 2017), Emily Locke
I ship it! I have a real soft spot for superhero/civilian relationships and they were really cute together. I love the "behind the scenes in the superhero world" aspect of the series.
Prompts:
- Emily vs tabloids
- Green Fury gets in the Justice League
- what of they tried to get people to not call her Green Fury anymore
- KARAOKE! Emily's enthusiasm is really cute
- a villain kidnaps Emily (with or without the team) and then Green Fury rescues her
- or vice versa. Emily would make a good superhero
- 5 times Emily used the Green Fury button
- what if one of them is secretly a supervillain?
The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys (Comic)
The Girl (Fabulous Killjoys Comic), Phoenix Witch (Fabulous Killjoys Comic)
WORLDBUILDING! I love this comic and the album it grew out of. Maybe an AU where the Killjoys don't die? Or maybe the Girl and the Witch go on a roadtrip? Blue can come too. Also, I like Girl's cat.
Prompts:
- where did the Phoenix Witch come from?
- what if Val Velocity had had any fucking chill at any point?
- how did Blue end up in that alley where Red found her?
- what are the Analog Wars?
- how do the Phoenix Witch and Cherri Cola know each other? Does he know they know each other?
- what if the Girl did detonate in the next world?
- when the Phoenix Witch describes the Girl's powers, the art shows Blue waking Destroya -- how are their powers connected, if they are?
- Red and the Phoenix Witch
Thank you so much for writing for me!

[EDIT OCTOBER 15: Prompts added. Sorry for the delay.]
Campaign (Podcast) (Bacta (Star Wars: Campaign Podcast), Lyntel'luroon (Campaign), Tamlin Jorun)
Short version: Teenage clone dad, action archeologist aunt, Force sensitive five year old who is also a noir PI. Gen adventures!
Long version:
The canon: This is a podcast set in the Star Wars universe, about five years after Revenge of the Sith. It's actual play, meaning that you listen to a bunch of people play the Star Wars RPG. Each episode is about an hour. The story follows the crew of the Mynock as they flee the Empire and attempt to raise a Force-sensitive five year old. It's free online here.
The prompts: I love everything about these three. Tamlin narrating à la noir movie outloud is AMAZING and I wish it showed up more. More archeology adventures funtimes with Lyn! With her teaching Tamlin maths, why not teach him archeology as well? And you know Bacta is going to need to teach the kid how to use a lightsaber. How did Bacta end up in that prison in the prologue? I would love to hear about the three of them working on an episode of their podcast.
Cleverman (Alinta West, Latani (Cleverman) )
Short version: Teen girls on the run for the dad of one of them. I ship them. Please let them be happy.
Long version:
The canon: Cleverman is an Australian TV show. It currenly has two seasons of 6 episodes each, with episodes being around 50 minutes. The story is set in an alternatr Australia, in which the Hairy people became known sometime back. This has caused racial tensions and the creation of a Zone by the Australian government to park Hairy people in and genetic screening. Also, there are ghosts and superpowers!
The prompts: I'd love futurefic where everything is okay and they're happy, either because the government got its shit together ethics-wise or because the two of them made it out somewhere. Maybe an AU in which things never went wrong. Angst related to the fact that Alinta's dad is the one hunting Latani's people would be great or about how Alinta sacrificed her freedom for Latani.
Locke & Key (Any of: Jackie Veda, Kinsey Locke, Lucas "Dodge" Caravaggio )
Short version: Two teens and the eldritch horror one of them dated. Worldbuilding.
Long version:
The canon: This is a finished horror comic. It has 37 issues, collected in 6 tpbs. Following the brutal murder of the father, the family moves back to his childhood home, Keyhouse, in Lovecraft, Massachusetts. To say more would spoil it. It goes through a bunch of different kinds of horror as it makes it way through the intricate plot.
The prompts: I would love worldbuilding fic and if you have to go canon-divergent AU or future!fic or past!fic (is that a thing? It should be a thing) to do it, then go right ahead. I would love fic that explore more mundane uses for the Keys or explains what this-or-that Key that never got used in canon does. Or make up an entirely new one! Or write about the Lovecraft psychiatrist (because SO MUCH THERAPY is needed, by pretty much everyone at every point) that somehow everyone tells the truth to and so has to deal with Lovecraftian terrors on their couch. An AU in which they use the Keys to be superheroes!
Marvel Secret Wars Battleworlds (Victor von Doom | God-Emperor Doom, Valeria Richards | Head of the Foundation)
Short version: A mad scientist who became a god and his daughter who is a science genius. SCIENCE! Worldbuilding.
Long version:
The canon: The nine issues miniseries from 2015 about the time the entire Marvel multiverse got destroyed and Doctor Doom made himself a god by saving what he could and turning into a patchwork universe, Battleworld.
The prompts: Anything expanding on Doom and Valeria and/or God Emperor and Head of the Foundation would be great. I also like Susan and Strange a lot, so you're welcome to include them. And of course worldbuilding would be AMAZING. There are hints Valeria knows something's off even before the ship crashes. Maybe she confronts Doom over it and things go differently? Future fic in which Battleworld remained and Doom gives Valeria the God Emperor/Ruler of Battleworld mantle.
Punic Wars RPF (Hannibal Barca (Punic Wars RPF), Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus Maior (Punic Wars RPF) )
Short version: Ancient Mediterranean generals! I ship them. Please let them be happy.
Long version:
The canon: The Second Punic War is a war that is full to the brim with feats of badassery (the Crossing of the Alps, Cannae, the fall of Carthago Nova) and things ridiculous, yet epic (Archimedes' death lasers). There's a movie starring Alexander Siddig as Hannibal for the war itself and Extra Credit: Extra History: The Punic Wars for the war and some more context, both before and after. Polybius can be found on Project Gutenberg, Perseus and Wikisource, as can Livy.
The prompts: An AU in which they're somehow on the same side (whichever). The Pun-ic War (I LIKE PUNS OK). IN SPAAAAAAAAAACE AU. Hannibal wins AU. He's a Carthaginian general sworn never to be a friend to Rome, he's a Roman general trying to avenge his father's death by Carthaginians, TOGETHER THEY FIGHT CRIME. I ship them, but you can totally go gen or with other ships instead, idc. Hannibal/Maharbal? Yes. Aemilia/Scipio? Also there. Ditto Aemilia/Scipio/Hannibal.
Unbelievable Gwenpool (Gwen Poole (Unbelievable Gwenpool) )
Short version: Girl transported to her favourite fictional universe who became a superhero! I ship her with Sarah (Terrible Eye). Friendship fic.
Long version:
The canon: A mostly self-contained Marvel comic about a girl from a world much like outs who got transported into her comics. She models herself after the most popular character, Deadpool -- the only way not to die is to set herself up as a main character, because everyone else is just cannon fodder, right? And then she makes friends with a bunch of misfits.
The prompts: Team fic! Friendship fic! Mostly here for friendships and shenanigans, honestly. If I ship Gwen with anyone, it's with Sarah, but friendship between them is also supercool! Maybe bonding with Vincent the Doombot? What about exploring one of the weird holidays in that one issue? What about Gwen's early days? How did she meet Ronnie? Futurefic! Maybe they save the world!
Thank you so much for writing for me!

My theme this year is "female mad scientists" (for given values of "mad", "scientist" and "mad scientist"), but please don't feel as though mad science has to be the be-all and end-all of what you make me.
Campaign (Podcast) (Lyntel'luroon (Star Wars: Campaign Podcast))
I am up to date on the show and will remain so. Feel free to set things at any time in canon or pre-canon or post-canon (or in a canon-divergent AU).
I ship Lyn with just about everyone female in the galaxy far far away (Lyn/Avaa! Lyn/Fentara! Lyn/Vous-vous!), but I think my favourite relationship is her mentoring Tamlin.
Lyn going on more archeology adventures. Lyn backstory (with the band or not). Lyn future-fic (with her future-wife?) -- what will Lyn do once she's collected the entire Journal of the Whills?
Critical Role (Web Series) (Anna Ripley, Raishan (Critical Role) )
I'm not (yet) up to date on the show, but I am caught up on everything involving both Ripley and Raishan and don't mind spoilers. Feel free to set things at any time in canon or pre-canon or post-canon (or in a canon-divergent AU).
I ship both of them with Percy and Keyleth -- not necessarily all at once! But if you want to write Ripley/Percy/Keyleth/Raishan, that would be amazing -- and with each other. Female mad scientists in love!
I'd love to read about Ripley's quest for the Vestiges or how and why she mad her deal with Orthax or Ripley (+ the Briarwoods?) backstory.
What was Raishan's plan to deal with Thordak without Vox Machina? Raishan vs Vecna! (I'm not a big fan of Raishan-pretending-to-be-Assum, btw.)
DC Cinematic Universe (Isabel Maru (DC Cinematic Universe) )
Wonder Woman is the only movie I have seen in the DC Cinematic Universe, but I don't mind spoilers for the others. Feel free to set things at any time in the movie or pre-movie or post-movie (or in a canon-divergent AU).
I want to know all about how Dr Maru was able to have notes on Uunhexium in (mostly) Neo-Assyrian Cuneiform. I totally ship her with Diana, btw. Post-movie shipfic?
Marvel 616 (Valeria Richards (Marvel 616) )
I've read most of the comics involving her. Her age/timeline is a bit of a mess, so feel free to set things whenever and make her whatever age you want.
I would love to see her bond with her godfather, Victor von Doom -- or with Verity Willis (Val was adorable in Agent of Asgard). Something set during Secret Wars would be great. BUILDING MORE FANNISH STUFF LIKE LIGHTSABERS! (Valeria vs fandom?
Voltron: Legendary Defender (Haggar (VLD) )
I am up to date on the show and will remain so. Feel free to set things at any time in canon or pre-canon or post-canon (or in a canon-divergent AU).
Ship-wise, I like Haggar/Allura, Haggar/Pidge and Haggar/Shiro and I'm intrigued by Haggar/Zarkon. I have no opinion on whether or not she is Lotor's mom or not (she could be Keith's mom, though, that'd be amazing).
Haggar is the mad scientist/space witch mash-up of my heart. I would love to know about how she structures her experiments, being a druid-engineer. Something where she's a double agent would be very interesting as would anything about her 10 000+ years of life -- what's it like living that long?
Thank you again for making something for me! (Comments welcome.)

Worldbuilding exchange reveals!
Apr. 19th, 2017 10:31 pmAs I said, I wrote three fics for
worldbuildingex : an assignment, a pinch-hit and a treat.
LOOK I'M NOT SAYING THIS FIC IS BASICALLY "JYN ERSO, THE CAST OF ROGUE ONE AND THE CITY OF JEDHA DO THE PARIS COMMUNE"... but this fic is basically "Jyn Erso, the cast of Rogue One and the city of Jedha do the Paris Commune".
As befits a story about both Rogue One and the Paris Commune, everybody dies -- in the same way they die in Rogue One, even.
This assignment was enormous amounts of fun to write and the entire last scene was written in a kind of fugue state. This is the fic I mean when I said one of them was "glaringly, obviously mine": Paris Commune! Super strong friendships! Doing the right thing because it's the right thing to do! Tragedy! The difference between peace and justice!
The tag "original alternate versions of canon characters" is meant to indicate that the Gwen in the story is not 616!Gwen or any of the Gwen Stacy who have previousy appeared in Marvel canon, but she is still a Gwen Stacy. Comics, everybody.
All in all a great exchange. A++, will do again next year.

Dear Worldbuilder
Jan. 30th, 2017 09:51 pmThank you for writing for me! I'm sure whatever you write me will be wonderful.
Feel free to poke around this journal or my Ao3 account (username: sevenofspade) if you want to. My letters tag is here.
I have six Do Not Wants: allegory/metaphor of real world politics, incest, rape, child abuse, character death and dysphoria. When these are canon, please don't focus on them. I would also prefer not to have to deal with people losing things important to them and toxic living arrangements, be that family or roomates.
Demigods Series - Rick Riordan
I feel like there are the pretty obvious pairings of Luke + Possession and Rachel + Oracle, but the reverse on those could also be interesting, either in canon (Luke & his mother the Oracle, Rachel and hitting Titans in the face) or in a role-reversal AU. Children of Hecate could go either way with being with Luke or Rachel. And of course I am always up for Rachel & Luke (or Rachel/Luke, why not) shenanigans.
Marvel Cinematic Universe
Marvel Secret Wars Battleworlds
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) - All Media Types
Stargate Atlantis
Voltron: Legendary Defender
Thank you again so much for writing for me!

Yuletide reveals post
Jan. 3rd, 2017 08:52 pmI wrote six fics for yuletide, including my assignment and a pinch-hit.
This was my assignment. I didn't start writing until late in the exchange period, because I was waiting for the letter to update. Especially since I regretting offering this fandom as soon as sign-ups closed, on account of not having a back-up plan in case of no prompt. I canon-reviewed and came up with semi-plotty (sort of shippy) gen post-canon fic. I have no idea if my recip is familiar with Fear Itself as an event (pro tip for people requesting franchises in exchanges: specify which parts you're familiar with), but hopefully the plot point in the fic that rests on that is explained well enough in text. I'm mostly happy with this fic, even if it's a bit rushed.
This was my pinch-hit. DHAMPYRESA, WRITING ABOUT THE SECOND PUNIC WAR? MORE LIKELY THAN YOU THINK!I only realised late that there's a thing in this that is similar to a scene in Mulan. Oops? Also featuring important science fact: Flour is an explosive substance.
Treats, in posting order.
I decided pretty early on that, by hook or by crook, there was going to be a Secret Wars fic in yuletide this year. Because Reasons. So I wrote this fic. I wish I could have written a Strange/Doom fic, because I couldn't find time to reread Triumph and Torment, which is where most of my Strange/Doom feelings come from. I'm quite happy with this, anyway. My recip had great prompts! I tried to use as much of them as I could.
Also guste-starring: Klarion, Cassandra Cain, Renee Montoya, Kate Kane, Maggie Sawyer and Steph's dad. (And secretly a Gwen Stacy.) Mostly I'm really proud of the summary/opening line.
It took me years, but I finally wrote some Yoko/Khany! This was really hard for me to write because writing fic for a canon in French is weird. But I did it and I quite like how this turned out. Femslash IN SPACE with some alien worldbuilding!
Pretty much last minute treat -- you can tell because it draws on this year's holiday annual. Gwenpool is a great comic. A++, definitely reccomend. Team of misfits celebrates ridiculous holiday!
General note: I don't write treats I'm finished with my assignment in exchanges, which really fucked me over, time-wise, this year. Everything ended up kind of rushed, but I figured "rushed treat > no treat".
(I do regret that I couldn't finish the fic I had started for
nomadicwriter in time for yuletide -- I have a finished draft now, but alas, too late, except for NYR --, but I burned out. Am still burned out, tbh. I wish
fandom_stocking had reveals mid-to-late January instead of early Jan.)

Having emerged from the thing, the other thing and the third thing, I have had time to look at my yuletide fics. THEY ARE THE GREATEST.
Posted in in alphabetical order, because that conveniently groups them by fandom.
SOMEBPDY WROTE ME HANNIBAL/SCIPIO IN MOTHERFUCKING IAMBIC PENTAMETER.
What the hell. What the hell, y'all. I am absolutely delighted.
It rhymes! It's in imabic pentameter! (Also, as far as I'm concerned, anyone who can figure out how the whole stress thing works in English is a genius. It's fucking witchcraft, is what is is.)
Someone wrote me Secret Wars fic! It gives excellent Valeria, Valeria & Doom, Valeria & Strange and Valeria & the Foundation -- and somehow the author managed to reach into my mind and figure out that I really like both Galactus and Franklin & Galactus and used that expertly.
I got another Secret Wars fic! It gives great Stephen Strange (his arc is AMAZING), Strange & Doom, Strange & Valeria and Valeria & Doom.
THEY ARE ALL THE BEST FIC
(For the curious, I wrote 6 fics, all in the main collection. There's a fic in it for anyone who guesses right what I wrote.)

Miscellania
Jun. 23rd, 2016 10:34 pmScarlet Witch 7 came out recently.
I don't know if I want to read it.
On the one hand: WANDA MAXIMOFF ♥!
On the other hand: issue #6 used French national tragedies in a really crass way that really soured me on it.
On the third, tentacular, hand: It doesn't matter whether I read this comic or not. Really, it doesn't! Because I, being French, do not count as a costumer for Marvel in the first place! Seriously, folks. I cannot boycott shit even when I want to, because I am not a costumer. It's really that simple. I cannot vote with my dollars, because Marvel would not have been getting my dollars anyway (or my euros).
On the fourth, robot, hand: I feel like nobody gives a single fuck how offensive Scarlet Witch #6 was. I haven't seen anyone else say anything about it. And that's fine, not everyone has to be offended by the same things! I just feel a little alone. (I suppose Marvel doesn't have to care if they lose my business.)
On the fifth hand: I don't know. I guess this makes me not a real fan.
Often when I pass the place where I've hung original artwork of Gwen Stacy on one wall facing original artwork of Wanda Maximoff on the other, I think about how cool a team-up between those two would be.
I think I need some sort of three strikes system, like "If you feel the need to vent about X more than three times, time to consider if getting rid of X in your life wouldn't be a good idea". (Not that this is always feasible, but. You know.)
MY DRAWINGS ARE TOO BIG! Seriously. I have a pastel work that's too big for my art folder. That's never happened before; usually I feel a little self-conscious about how much bigger than my works the folder is. I need a new folder.
I also need to figure out if my scanner drivers survived the recent system reboot and how to scan gigantic artwork.
I had semi-impromptu lunch with one the fandom folks today and it was lovely ♥!
We spent the entire time talking in French. I don't think I've ever spent this long speaking about fandom in French before.
In 1862, Gustave Flaubert published a novel, Salammbô, in which Hannibal Barca is a character. I haven't read it.
This is mostly because the novel is entirely straight-faced about and in part responsible for how popular the image of Carthaginians sacrificing children is -- and I am always very wary of taking the words of the victors about the habits of the people they commited genocide upon. (Flaubert, by necessity, drew only on Roman sources.)
Also, it takes place right after the First Punic War, while Hannibal is still a child -- by all accounts his role in the novel is minimal -- and I'm really more about the Second than First Punic War.
That said, I did enjoy what I saw of it in the tome 2 of the Koblenz comic (Marcher dans Carthage une nuit sans lune) -- the comic had some very pointed commentary about how purity != virginity, too, which I appreciated -- especially the veil of Tanith, that was some awesome stuff. Anyway, I have the Lone Sloane/IN SPACE adaptation of the Flauber novel by Druillet somewhere, I think, maybe I should read that.
Anyway, not only did the novel give its name to one pf my favourite Indochine song, Salombo (Hanoi 2006 orchestral version), but I recently discovered it's also given its name to a pastry.
So naturally I had to try it. It's okay. It's a lot like an eclair.
I finally signed up for fandomgiftbox.
I don't know if I want to read it.

Fic things
May. 17th, 2016 11:25 pmI've just realised I forgot to mention a couple of things about Five Seasons in Latveria, the Layla Miller + Doctor Doom gen fic I posted last Saturday. (Honestly, none of the notes I post on here (as opposed to Ao3) are that important, but I do like talking about my writing.)
Ilinca makes an appearance in this fic, she last appeared on Doctor Doom's staff in Retrograde (also featuring Layla Miller). I have some headcanons and backstory for her, but nothing set in stone, mostly she exists to fulfill all my non-Doombot minion related needs.
It also fulfills the "That Moment (incident / chapter / episode) in detail" prompt from this bingo card I got over two years ago you shut up I am on top of things.
( Repost of said bingo card )
I'll take prompts if you have them, but no guarantees/some of these are already in progress/etc.
One of these days, I will get better at not getting anxiety about replying to comments on Ao3. Today is not this day.
(I don't know why I thought making a deal with myself about how I had to post a comment on a fic for every comment on my fic I replied to would help matters, but it kind of has? So long as I remember what fics I read when it comes down to comment time -- and I often blank. I am a failboat.)
I do read and appreciate every single comment I get and I will get back to them, even if takes me a while.
I wanted to write a fic about Teal'c watching The Force Awakens (with Vala) for
starwarsflashmeme 's prompt of "Alien" because Teal'c is canonically a giant Star Wars nerd (who likes the prequel, even) and Finn's arc would speak to him: loyal soldier of galaxy spanning colonising power (Goa'uld/First Order) rebels against said colonising power following a meeting with a scrappy underdog (SG1/Poe) and ends up joining the organisation said underdog is part of (SGC/Resistance) to fight The Good Fight TM.
Vala is there because she wants to know what the fuss is all about.
Alas, I needed to rewatch some Stargate and find a Teal'c voice and it was Eurovision, so it didn't happen. For amnesty, maybe?
Ilinca makes an appearance in this fic, she last appeared on Doctor Doom's staff in Retrograde (also featuring Layla Miller). I have some headcanons and backstory for her, but nothing set in stone, mostly she exists to fulfill all my non-Doombot minion related needs.
It also fulfills the "That Moment (incident / chapter / episode) in detail" prompt from this bingo card I got over two years ago you shut up I am on top of things.
I'll take prompts if you have them, but no guarantees/some of these are already in progress/etc.

Eurovision 2016 3: REVENGE OF THE GLITTER
May. 14th, 2016 11:30 pmUnpopular Eurovision opinion: I liked the UK song from last year.
Belgium: Bored.
Czech Republic: It's cute.
Netherlands: I like the clock floor.
Azerbaidjan: I like it! Nice lightshow and costumes.
Hungary: Whistling! And one the drummers from Mad Max.
Italy: It's cute, but I like the Italian parts more than the English ones.
Isreal: This is 100% what Billy Kaplan's Eurovision entry would look like, between the hair and the lyrics.
Bulgaria: I LOVE IT! (It is 100% a Pride song, idc.)
Sweden: Eh.
Germany: WHAT.
France: I like the rhymes. (Also, time to play "how many locations in the postcard can I name", lmao.)
Poland: Meh.
Interlude: ???
Australia: Nice dress! Great voice and glitter too.
Cyprus: THIS IS GREAT!
Serbia: Her dress suits her perfectly. And the song is great.
Lithuania: How very boys band (in a good way!).
Croatia: Glitter dress!
Russia: The wings are awesome -- the staging is pretty great in general, tbh.
Spain: How many contestants have this hairstyle.
Latvia: It's okay.
Ukraine: I'm crying and the staging is great.
Malta: It's fine.
Georgia: My least favourite.
Latveria: Fuck the haters, this one's great.
Austria: Conspiracy theory time, this lovely song is about the refugiee crisis.
Wales: Put some effort in your costuming, guys.
Armenia: I think I liked this one better in the semi.
Unexpected Ian McKellen is unexpected!
My favourites: Italy, Israel, Bulgaria, Australia, Cyprus, Serbia, Ukraine, Latveria and Austria.
Also, I wrote a fic:

Scarlet Witch #6, by James Robinson (story) and Marguerite Sauvage (art): I am breaking my own rule of not speaking about ongoing comics until enough to collect in a tpb/a whole arc has come out. It's not really a rule, but even if it were, I feel that this issue deserves its own post.
First off, I have to say I really loved the art this issue, especially the Art Nouveau influence on the composition and page structure.
I wish it had been enough to redeem the story for me.
The story is set in Paris. As you know, reader-Bob, I am a Parisian born and bred, which means I can be pretty strict about depictions of Paris in fiction. However, I have long ago decided that Marvel Paris has some significant differences with ours, the most notable one being that the plan autoroutier pour Paris went ahead as expected -- this was the only way I could make sense of a scene in Matt Fraction's Journey into Mystery. (There will not be a test, you do not have to remember this.)
The comic had some pitfalls concerning the use of French -- more on this later -- but I was reading merely along, until I came across this bit of dialogue, by French superhero Alain Racine:
WHO THE FUCK OKAYED THIS
My thoughts went pretty much blank for a minute, because who the fuck thought this was okay? It's kept very vague whether this applies to the attacks in Jan 2015 or November 2015, which only makes it worse. If you're going to exploit national tragedies for cheap, throwaway, unnecessary melodrama, at least have the guts to commit to one.
I've talked before about how I hate to see human-made tragedies co-opted by the in-human, but wow, this reaches new heights of bullshit. And yes, I am not rational about this, yes there have probably been similar cases in comics before. I don't care. I know a guy who was in the stadium when the bomb exploded outside in November, I spent an entire afternoon in January trying to find the names of the hostages as the hostage crisis was happening so I could tell a friend if he had family among them (spoiler: he did), I spent a week in November not knowing if a friend had been at the Bataclan -- which seemed unlikely but what if -- (he was not) and I could go on, so NO I AM NOT RATIONAL.
This has really soured me on the comic, I have to say, especially since it's so pointless. I have no qualms with tragedies, even recent ones (although, yikes, too soon here, imho), used in fiction, as long as it's handled sensitively. Obviously what "handled sensitively" is very YMMV, but I would be very surprised to hear anyone include "throwaway line to explain why some dude was so busy he couldn't save his wife" in their definition.
ANYWAY.
This said, it is time to talk about the mistakes in the French in this comic. I wouldn't normally care, but it has a character point out "that isn't gramatically correct, not in France" so that makes it fair game. You want to talk about French like you know what you're talking about? I'll judge you as if you did.
There is mention of a group of bankrobbers called "les Apaches Nouveaux". It should be "les Nouveaux Apaches". (Fyi, it is from the Apaches, a part of the criminal underworld of 1900s Paris -- credit where it's due, this is pointed out in the comic.) Also, I feel really bad for les Apaches de Paname, who are lovely folks and don't deserve this bullshit.
There's a dude named Joubert. Marc, but I was reminded of the running joke concerning Brian Joubert on the Guignols: *falls down* *falls down again*
Then we have the above nitpick about Le Peregrine not being proper French (correct) and his name being Le Faucon Pèlerin (also correct), which makes it all the more hilarious when Wanda is soon after referred to as "La Sorcière Ecarlate", because she is not, in fact, la Sorcière Ecarlate in the French comics.
She is la Sorcière Rouge.
( And I can prove it )
Penultimate panel:
Wanda: "Pas tant que ça, crois-moi..."
Wanda: "Les gens tapent encore plus fort sur les mutants."
Billy: "oh mon dieu, tu es..."
Last panel:
Billy: "LA SORCIERE ROUGE."
Billy: "Mon Vengeur préféré."
Billy: "J'y crois pas que j'ai dit ça tout haut."
Wanda: "Ne t'en fais pas..."
This from my copy of Young Avengers V1 -- picture cropped so you can see it's the actual, physical book. This is the official Marvel translation in France.
Now, I am not saying that Panini, the company in charge of publishing Marvel comics in French in France, is without its translation blunders. This very volume, for example, translates "Hawkingbird" once as "le Faucon Moqueur" and once doesn't translate it. However, the names of most superheroes have been consistent. (Except Wolverine. Wolverine was Serval for a very long time, until he became Wolverine again. And Sue Storm is Jane Storm, idk.)
So Wanda is la Sorcière rouge.
AND SHE DESERVES BETTER.
(Also, wow, he is so not dressed for traipsing around the Catacombes, if that's where that one flashback takes place -- and if not, where the fuck does it?)
But hey, at least the art is pretty and Paris looks recognisably like Paris.
I am going to make some "Wanda Maximoff deserved better" signs one day and it will apply in every single continuity, both instory and outstory. JUST YOU WAIT.

It's pretty entertaining so far and I'm learning stuff -- I had no idea l'homme rouge des Tuileries was supposed to be someone specific, for example.
It's also reminded me how much I love the expression "l’âme damnée". It's an expression that translates to "damned soul" and is used to refer to someone's most loyal minion -- "Dark Vador est l'âme damnée de Palpatine" (Darh Vader is Palpatine's damned soul) is hilarious, because puns. I like puns.

Dear Night on Fic Mountain Creator
Apr. 18th, 2016 10:24 pmDear
nightonficmountain Creator,
Thank you for writing for me! I'm sure whatever you write me will be wonderful.
Feel free to poke around this journal or my Ao3 account (username: sevenofspade) if you want to. My letters tag is here.
I have three Do Not Wants: incest, rape and child abuse. When these are canon, please don't focus on them. I'd also prefer is you didn't dwell on any suicidal ideation or prolonged descriptions of grief. I would also prefer not to have to deal with people losing things important to them and toxic living arrangements, be that family or roomates. Thank you.
On the other hand, there are a lot of things I do want. Here’s a partial list. (I obviously don’t expect you to stick all of these in one story, that would be impossible.)
( General likes )
Ancient History RPF
Dido of Carthage, Hannibal Barca, Scipio Africanus
The most relevant tags in my journal for this fandom are the Ancient History RPF and Punic Wars RPF ones. I've requested these characters before, but I would fucking love anything and everything about them.
Here is a primer for Hannibal and Scipio, with more relevant links at the end. Here is a post about Dido (and Augustus) -- you know what, I never thought of it before, but I WOULD FUCKING LOVE A STORY IN WHICH DIDO AND AUGUSTUS MET.
( Prompts )
Darths & Droids
Any of: Annie (Darths & Droids), Ben (Darths & Droids), The GM (Darths & Droids), Pete (Darths & Droids), Sally (Darths & Droids)
I only started reading this recently, but I'm pretty caught up, give or take a week or two. Don't worry about spoiling me. I headcanon the GM as a woman, fyi. (I talk a very little about it in this entry, if it helps.)
My request here boils down to FRIENDSHIP FIC.
( Prompts )
DC's Legends of Tomorrow (TV)
Kendra Saunders, Leonard Snart, Sara Lance
I am up to date on this show, don't worry about spoiling me.
( Prompts )
Gwen Variants (Marvel Comics Covers)
No nominated characters
The canon is a series of variant covers Marvel put out last year to promote the Spider-Gwen comic launch. Each cover reimagines Gwen Stacy as one (or more) Marvel character.
I like Gwen Stacy a lot. I think she's super smart and really kind and amazingly brave, be that in Spider-Gwen or the movies or Ults Spidey. I love canon-adjacent AUs too, especially role reversal AUs (I hesitate to call these canon-divergent, but they could be!), so this fandom is basically two great tastes that taste great together!
I'm just going to direct you to the relevant part of my yuletide letter from last year for prompts, because it is HELLA LONG. Pick any and all Gwens you want and feel free to mix and match prompts as you wish.
Loki: Agent of Asgard
Relationship: Verity Willis & Loki
I follow many Marvel comic series and have followed more in the past. Don't hesitate to crossover with the wider Marvel-verse; if you have questions about my familiarity with any given series, please ask.
The Loki + Verity friendship is a thing of beauty and I love it so much. This series has a brilliant narrative about the role of stories in our lies and what it means to be a Trickster. It's about Loki achieving redemption, at long last and on his terms (long version here).
( Prompts )
Yoko Tsuno (Comics)
Relationship: Yoko Tsuno/Khany
First thing I ever shipped. I would love culture clash or negotiating a (very very very) long distance relationship where they only see each other in person once in long while or being spacemoms to Poky and Rosée or consequences/what-happened-after a specific album or just space adventures. OR TIMETRAVEL ADVENTURES, why should Yoko get all the fun timetravelling, I'm sure the Vineans have the tech somewhere.
I would love it forever if you wrote any sort of Vinean worldbuilding. What's it like for Khany to be older than her mom and have her twin be six years old?
Just anything, anything at all, really.
Thank you so much for writing for me!

#RogueOneIsAPrequel
Apr. 9th, 2016 01:02 amI was having a bad day of the "well i might as well just quit everything and fandom especially since nothing i do ever pleases anyone does anyone even like plotty fic no they do not why do i bother i know i can't do shippy i am a failure as a fan" type but then I drew some stuff and watched Mission Cléopatre so I'm feeling better. Not great, but better.
(Just so you don't worry: I'll be gone tomorrow evening and should catch up on the -- has it been a week already? -- week or so of posts and comments I missed soon.)
ANYWAY! Upcoming fannish stuff I'm excited about!
ROGUE ONE! I still have a most terrible case of the Star Wars, lmao (you should see my WIP folder). Things I got out of this trailer: Jyn Erso! MON MOTHMA! Jyn Erso/Mon Mothma! Admiral Fancy Cape! Jyn Erso in Imperial uniform! Voice-over guy! SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE!
The things I want from this movie are basically the same and I'm really hoping fandom delivers on both the femslash and villain/hero shipping. OR BOTH. Both is good. (A fandom person can dream of Imperial!Jyn/Rebel!Mon, okay. Let me liiiiiiiiiiiiive)
I decided it was time I got a Star Wars icon, so now I do (on DW).
DID YOU KNOW CLOAK AND DAGGER ARE GETTING A TV SHOW? Now you do. I am so happy about this, I love Cloak and Dagger a lot. They were awesome in Ults Spidey. I enjoy seeing them show up in any/everything. (The TV show won't go that way, but 1602 Witch Hunter Angela has THE BEST interpretation of their origin story.)
ALSO I really like the Captain America: Civil War - In Good Company featurette.
And this seems as good a time as any to mention the fics I wrote for Bad Bang. I am basically TOO EARNEST FOR BAD BANG, sadly, so they're less crack than crack taken seriously:
( Jedi and mutants, oh my! )
The story of how these fics got written is kind of convoluted (and the remix chains on Ao3 are not much help), but it all started in a discussion about Padmé's favourite colour, hence the insistence on MAGENTA NOT PURPLE >:[

The story of how these fics got written is kind of convoluted (and the remix chains on Ao3 are not much help), but it all started in a discussion about Padmé's favourite colour, hence the insistence on MAGENTA NOT PURPLE >:[
Fic Friday!
Feb. 5th, 2016 09:36 pmIn an initiative to get me to comment on more fic, I have decided to make a post every friday about the fics I commented on that week. Because this occurred to me just now, I have not done the (very little) organising I need to do, so here, have five random fics I commented on at some point in time.
( Hamilton (musical) )
( Percy Jackson and the Olympians )
( Journey into Mystery )
( Bad Blood )
( Benjamin January series )
