This was my assignment and it was great fun to write! It's an idea I've had ever since this comment thread. It's stayed pretty similar since then. I mentionned it at the end of this entry with "1) a buddy cop AU, 2) one of them's a ghost, 3) there are flying cars 4) and also togas, 5) the mob's involved, 6) there's a West Side Story-esque subplot involving neither of the buddy cops and 7) familial relationships between characters are changed. And before you think that's all, it is also 8) a murder mystery". As you can see, only point 7 has changed -- that really helped streamline the story, oddly enough. (Point 6 was moved to its own story, see below.)

I woke up at 1PM on Sunday and said to myself "fuck it I'm writing the Hannibal/Scipio mobsters AU". And I did! Even though I took five/six hours out of my ten to meet with a friend and see Tale of Tales (would not reccomend, btw). It could have been better if I'd had more time, but I enjoyed writing it and I like how it turned out anyway.

I am here to talk about the clusterfuck that is the Vlad Tepes/Mehmed the Conqueror/Radu cel Frumos relationship.

I hope you will forgive the informal tone of this and any possible mistakes, because it's not my area of expertise (for a given value of expertise), but I will try my best to explain why this period of Wallachian/Ottoman histoy is super interesting!

Of possible interest to some of you: I am now running history_exchange, an exchange for fic about historical figures (ie, the non-zombie kind of dead people). The wordcount minimum is 500 words. Nominations are currently ongoing.

So! Rome thoughts, yes? This is going to be a bit disjointed, because I last saw these episodes lo these mumble-mumble weeks ago and am working on memory only, but here goes.

Overall, I found this series very compelling and enjoyed it. I'll definitely be watching the second season.

Oh, and I first got the idea to watch this from a woman giving a conference at the Louvre on Ancient History (different area of study, though) and praising its historical accuracy so ther eyou go.

I've been watching Crash Course: World History and Crash Course: US History, because I must have seen it linked somewhere, and I am a sucker for History. (Also, sometimes I just need 10 more minutes to finish a drawing and it provides good background noise.)

Overall, I liked it, even though it was very broad and I didn't really learn much in World History. I learned slightly more about US History. One thing I did not like was that one joke about the French being cowardly. I am just so tired of people from the US (because it always is people from the US) saying that. Also US History did nothing to convince me that the US isn't completely wrong on so many things (haha, what is that health care reform, it is such bullshit how is it better than what was going on before). I just don't understand so much of the thinking that goes into US policy making.

That said, I did like that the host (his name is John Green and I have a feeling I know that name from somewhere but idk where) was willing to point out that there was a lot of shitty stuff happening in both US and World History. Particularly, I liked the bit where he pointed out that 50 years ago President Obama would not have been able to sit in the from of a bus in Alabama. (Btw, US-sort-of-friend, think about that the next time you comment that my ancestors at the beginning of the 20th century were living like in the Middle Ages. Maybe they were, but at least there was none of that "separate but equal" bullshit. Also, I wanted to show you something cool about my history and you were a dick about it and I know it's been a year, but I am still pissed about it, because you were a dick about it.)

That said, I am now all out of video podcasts to watch and feel sadly deprived. Does anyone have any recs? I've a preference for animated stuff and History, but anything is goo. (This is for background drawing noise, so sadly regular podcasts don't do the trick. I tend to focus too much on either the listening or the drawing instead of doing both at once.)

Also, I've been sitting on these links for a while and I feel like linking them now, when they're somewhat relevant. Here's a parody of Lady Gaga's Bad Romance about Women's Suffrage in the US. And here's a video channel (sadly discontinued, which shows you how long I've had this link) where two history professor parody a bunch of songs to make them about various historical subjects. Off the top of my head, I remember liking the Vikings one, the Beowulf one, the Hannibal one (yes, I am predictable), the Joan of Arc one (still predictable), the King Tut one, the Rome one, the French Revolution one and the Trojan War one. (Also they do subtitles/karaoke lyrics, which is pretty cool.)

1. I'm now an auditor at the Louvre museul for the summer. I'll be attending lectures on Ancient Medicine. Cool stuff.

2. Opera! My dad got the tickets for next season (2013-2014). We'll be watching: Aida (Verdi), La fanciulla del West (Puccini), Die Zauberflöte (Mozart), L'italiana in Algeri (Rossini), La traviata (Verdi) and Madama Butterfly (Puccini). Plus he managed to get the places relatively cheap, it'll be great.

3. My mom broke her arm while twisting her ankle.

The very nice folks over at hetalia_fr are making an Advent calendar. This my contribution.

I know most people on my f-list don't speak French, but given that this an anonymous event, I'm keeping this f-locked until it's over.

The french itself shouldn't be too hard since I've tried to write it like a fairy tale, for the most part.

Summary: The history of Scandinavia (mostly Denmark with hints of other countries) seen through the eyes of Denmark, from the origins to the protestant Reformation.
