I wrote three fics, as previously said.

Senatus consultum ultimum (5029 words) by sevenofspade
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Ancient History RPF
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Gaius Sempronius Gracchus, Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus, Cornelia Africana
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Science Fiction
Series: Part 1 of Latium
Summary: The Roman mob kills Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus. His brother investigates.

This was my assignment and it was great fun to write! It's an idea I've had ever since this comment thread. It's stayed pretty similar since then. I mentionned it at the end of this entry with "1) a buddy cop AU, 2) one of them's a ghost, 3) there are flying cars 4) and also togas, 5) the mob's involved, 6) there's a West Side Story-esque subplot involving neither of the buddy cops and 7) familial relationships between characters are changed. And before you think that's all, it is also 8) a murder mystery". As you can see, only point 7 has changed -- that really helped streamline the story, oddly enough. (Point 6 was moved to its own story, see below.)

Notes on various characters and concepts appearing in the story. (I deliberately threw various periods of Ancient History into this AU.)

This was the one pinch-hit the exchange had. I had great fun writing it as well! And I can't believe no one made the Barca/Barça joke before.

(I picked AS Roma more or less at random, but it was an inspired choice. The Barça itself describes them as familiar rivals.)

Summary:

Scipio and Hannibal, through the years.

I woke up at 1PM on Sunday and said to myself "fuck it I'm writing the Hannibal/Scipio mobsters AU". And I did! Even though I took five/six hours out of my ten to meet with a friend and see Tale of Tales (would not reccomend, btw). It could have been better if I'd had more time, but I enjoyed writing it and I like how it turned out anyway.

The collection is open! There are 16 works, of which I wrote 3. You can try to guess which ones they are, but I suspect it will not be much of a challenge.

I got two fics! Well, a fic and a treat.

The treat is very short and can't be described without spoilers.

The Third Aphrodite (3104 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Historical RPF, Classical Greece and Rome History & Literature RPF
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Sappho (fl. 600 BC), Cleis (Sappho), Ἀφροδίτη | Aphrodite (Hellenistic Religion & Lore)
Additional Tags: Dreams, Suicide Attempt, Growing Up, Lesbian Character, Wordcount: 1.000-5.000, Ocean, Drowning, Magical Realism, Storytelling
Summary:

It's said that Sappho killed herself by jumping off a cliff when she failed to win the heart of the beautiful ferryman Phaon. This tale has the story backwards, for in fact Sappho died not at the end of her life, but at the beginning.

This fic speaks to me on such a deep level I don't even have words for it. IT'S WONDERFUL.

I'm so glad I ran this exchange, you lot, SO GLAD.
dhampyresa: (Quit killing people)
I am here to talk about the clusterfuck that is the Vlad Tepes/Mehmed the Conqueror/Radu cel Frumos relationship.

I hope you will forgive the informal tone of this and any possible mistakes, because it's not my area of expertise (for a given value of expertise), but I will try my best to explain why this period of Wallachian/Ottoman histoy is super interesting!

Said period being the 15th century )

So there you have it. This is what Wallachia/the Ottoman Empire looked like in the 15th century.

And now I will go meet with some friends and then see Mad Max:Fury Road in theaters for the fifth time.

Thank you so much for writing for me! You're amazing! And anything you write will be amazing! (I'm honestly not difficult! And possibly addicted to exclamation marks!)

I have three DNWs: incest, rape and child abuse.

General likes )

But just write whatever inspires you the most!

Prompts in chronological order, btw. You will notice they tend towrds the "TELL ME EVERYTHING" side of things, because I would be legit delighted to get anything about any of these folks (and having to pick who to request from the nominations was such heartache, let me tell you).

Specific Prompts )

Thanks again for writing for me!

Of possible interest to some of you: I am now running [community profile] history_exchange, an exchange for fic about historical figures (ie, the non-zombie kind of dead people). The wordcount minimum is 500 words. Nominations are currently ongoing.

Most of you probably know by now that I have a lot of feelings about Dead Romans and the dead Carthaginians who love them. The rest of you probably already have your eyes glaeing over by now, which fair enough. I have several RL friends who have a dedicated "you and your Ancient Dead People" face* for me. Doesn't mean I love them any less. (The friends or the Anceint Dead People.)

For the last couple of days I've been having trouble writing fic because I apparently feel like I should be working on my original fiction instead and having trouble writing original fiction because the novel is almost over aaaaaaaaaaah (*runs arpund with head on fire*), so of course I have been procrastinating like crazy.

Over the course of procrastinating, I came across The Dead Romans Society which is a delightful webcomic (unfortunately hosted on Tumblr, which is not the best site for hosting webcomics) about Dante going on another otherworldly roadtrip, this time with a bunch of dead Romans to show him towards Vergil.

There isn't a lot of it, but what there is of it is absolutely delightful. It manages to pack an amazing of (accurate, as far as I can tell) characterisation, humour and emotional gutpunches in a very small space. Also, the art is great and the character design is amazing.

Dead Romans Society title page

Do you know how hard it is to give people recognisable designs when they're all wearing the same thing, espceially when that thing is A FUCKING TOGA? Very.

So yeah, if you are at all interested in Dead Romans, you should totally read it.

As a closing thought, here's Catullus being a total Sappho fanboy. (Can you blame him? It's Sappho.)

*It is not always the same face, even on the same friend. I may talk a lot about Ancient Dead People. Ask me about that time I texted my brother about cycling in togas!

Okay, this is going to be my last Ides of March themed post for this year, I swear.

So! Rome thoughts, yes? This is going to be a bit disjointed, because I last saw these episodes lo these mumble-mumble weeks ago and am working on memory only, but here goes.

Only tyrants need to worry about tyrant killers. )
Overall, I found this series very compelling and enjoyed it. I'll definitely be watching the second season.

Oh, and I first got the idea to watch this from a woman giving a conference at the Louvre on Ancient History (different area of study, though) and praising its historical accuracy so ther eyou go.

FRENCH HISTORY, EVERYONE! It's not just a mess in the XIXth century.
dhampyresa: (This is my life)
I've been watching Crash Course: World History and Crash Course: US History, because I must have seen it linked somewhere, and I am a sucker for History. (Also, sometimes I just need 10 more minutes to finish a drawing and it provides good background noise.)

Overall, I liked it, even though it was very broad and I didn't really learn much in World History. I learned slightly more about US History. One thing I did not like was that one joke about the French being cowardly. I am just so tired of people from the US (because it always is people from the US) saying that. Also US History did nothing to convince me that the US isn't completely wrong on so many things (haha, what is that health care reform, it is such bullshit how is it better than what was going on before). I just don't understand so much of the thinking that goes into US policy making.

That said, I did like that the host (his name is John Green and I have a feeling I know that name from somewhere but idk where) was willing to point out that there was a lot of shitty stuff happening in both US and World History. Particularly, I liked the bit where he pointed out that 50 years ago President Obama would not have been able to sit in the from of a bus in Alabama. (Btw, US-sort-of-friend, think about that the next time you comment that my ancestors at the beginning of the 20th century were living like in the Middle Ages. Maybe they were, but at least there was none of that "separate but equal" bullshit. Also, I wanted to show you something cool about my history and you were a dick about it and I know it's been a year, but I am still pissed about it, because you were a dick about it.)

That said, I am now all out of video podcasts to watch and feel sadly deprived. Does anyone have any recs? I've a preference for animated stuff and History, but anything is goo. (This is for background drawing noise, so sadly regular podcasts don't do the trick. I tend to focus too much on either the listening or the drawing instead of doing both at once.)

Also, I've been sitting on these links for a while and I feel like linking them now, when they're somewhat relevant. Here's a parody of Lady Gaga's Bad Romance about Women's Suffrage in the US. And here's a video channel (sadly discontinued, which shows you how long I've had this link) where two history professor parody a bunch of songs to make them about various historical subjects. Off the top of my head, I remember liking the Vikings one, the Beowulf one, the Hannibal one (yes, I am predictable), the Joan of Arc one (still predictable), the King Tut one, the Rome one, the French Revolution one and the Trojan War one. (Also they do subtitles/karaoke lyrics, which is pretty cool.)

[personal profile] sineala : I wish to hear all about your love for Hannibal and Scipio (or Hannibal/Scipio, as the case may be).

Hannibal, Scipio and me )

TL;DR: If you don't think Hannibal and Scipio faked their deaths to run away together, you're WRONG WRONG WRONG OMG HOW CAN ANYONE BE SO WRONG?

dhampyresa: (Gwen Stacy)
Title: The Toga of Time
Fandom: Ancient History RPF, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man
Characters: Gwen Stacy, Scipio Africanus, Hannibal Barca
Warnings: Chose not to use
Spoilers: None
Word Count: 2 880
Summary: The History of the Second Punic War keeps changing, Gwen Stacy keeps having to go back to fix it and Hannibal Barca and Scipio Africanus keep meeting for the first time under different circumstances.
Author's Note: This is the first draft of what ended up being Punica Fides. It's very different from that fic, as you can see from the character list.
In Johnny and the Bomb, Terry Pratchett postulates the existence of the Trousers of Time, where sometimes History goes down one leg and sometimes down the other. Ancient Romans wore togas instead of trousers.

First off, HAPPY NEW YEAR y'all! I hope 2014 is awesome for you.

I got two fics for yuletide: Transverse orientation by perryvic and/or Zaganthi (I honestly have no idea what's up with the authorship of this fic) in the Lucifer (comics) fandom, a reunion fic between Elaine and Lucifer that is pretty great and a treat, The Horsewoman's Tale by skazka ([livejournal.com profile] samgrass ) in the Demon Knights fandom, a fic where Horsewoman and Ystin (+ Al Jabr) tag along with the pilgrims from Canterbury Tales while looking for a weird saint relic. You should all read it, even if you know nothing about Canterbury Tales, because I didn't, but it was utterly awesome anyway.

I wrote 6 fics, in 6 fandoms. I'll do reveals in alphabetical order of fic title since that (coincidentally) puts my main assignment first.

Fandoms are: Norse mythology/Sundown: Whispers of Raganrok, Batgirl v2, Ancient History RPF, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and Demon Knights )

In total, I wrote 13 701 words of fic and almost 2k on those very same fics. (I tend to overthink things and could write many more words on these fics (up to and including full-on DVD commentary), like for all my fics, but I've already bored you enough as it is. Unless you'd like to ask me to.)
dhampyresa: (Life is a Wonderland)
1. I'm now an auditor at the Louvre museul for the summer. I'll be attending lectures on Ancient Medicine. Cool stuff.

2. Opera! My dad got the tickets for next season (2013-2014). We'll be watching: Aida (Verdi), La fanciulla del West (Puccini), Die Zauberflöte (Mozart), L'italiana in Algeri (Rossini), La traviata (Verdi) and Madama Butterfly (Puccini). Plus he managed to get the places relatively cheap, it'll be great.

3. My mom broke her arm while twisting her ankle.

The very nice folks over at [livejournal.com profile] hetalia_fr are making an Advent calendar. This my contribution.

I know most people on my f-list don't speak French, but given that this an anonymous event, I'm keeping this f-locked until it's over.

The french itself shouldn't be too hard since I've tried to write it like a fairy tale, for the most part.

You guys probably know that this the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall.

As usual, I didn't doodle anything relating to "current" events today. I had thought I would, but no [livejournal.com profile] steampowers had to eat my brain.

Also I went to see 'Le Concert' yesterday with P.A, and it was FABULOUS. Go see it. NOW.
