Summary: The Roman mob kills Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus. His brother investigates.

This was my assignment and it was great fun to write! It's an idea I've had ever since this comment thread. It's stayed pretty similar since then. I mentionned it at the end of this entry with "1) a buddy cop AU, 2) one of them's a ghost, 3) there are flying cars 4) and also togas, 5) the mob's involved, 6) there's a West Side Story-esque subplot involving neither of the buddy cops and 7) familial relationships between characters are changed. And before you think that's all, it is also 8) a murder mystery". As you can see, only point 7 has changed -- that really helped streamline the story, oddly enough. (Point 6 was moved to its own story, see below.)

Notes on various characters and concepts appearing in the story. (I deliberately threw various periods of Ancient History into this AU.)

Cloelia : She's famous for bringing hostages safely to Rome. (This is why she insists on Gaius getting back home safely at the beginning.)

Lesbia : Catullus was the biggest Sappho fanboy ever and named one of the women he adressed his poems to after the island Sappho lived on.

Fulvia : Her full name is Fulvia Flacca Bambula, which allowed me to have her be Gaius' partner in a reference to Marcus Flavius Flaccus being a political ally of Gaius Sempronius Gracchus. Historically had Mark Antony as one of her husbands (hence her having her bike stolen by Mark Antony of the Lupercals). "you nail one creep's hands to a door, you never hear the end of it" is absolutely a reference to Cicero.

Agrippa : The historical cleaned up Rome by giving it better sewers etc. This one is cleaning the city in a more figurative sense.

Teutoburg

Zama

Agnodice : A super badass Athenian doctor who learned medicine while crossdressing and once got naked in a court of law to prove that the reason women kept going back to her as her patients was because she was a good doctor and midwife and not because she was fucking them.

Bucchero : "Etruscan national pottery" it's a kind of ceramic that only the Etruscans did.

Sophonisba : A Carthaginian noblewoman from the Second Punic War. In this verse, her story has a happier ending.

Harustech : It's a play on "haruspex" and all the models from the brand ( Fulgurales, Tonitruales, Augury) keep that theme running.

Horatius

Etruscans are famous for acroterial and roof statues.

That should cover most of it, I think.

This was the one pinch-hit the exchange had. I had great fun writing it as well! And I can't believe no one made the Barca/Barça joke before.

(I picked AS Roma more or less at random, but it was an inspired choice. The Barça itself describes them as familiar rivals.)

Scipio and Hannibal, through the years.

I woke up at 1PM on Sunday and said to myself "fuck it I'm writing the Hannibal/Scipio mobsters AU". And I did! Even though I took five/six hours out of my ten to meet with a friend and see Tale of Tales (would not reccomend, btw). It could have been better if I'd had more time, but I enjoyed writing it and I like how it turned out anyway.

Sorry to mostly-miss the point of your post (and I am impressed by all the fun tropes you list above) but I am going D: at the anti-recommendation for Tale of Tales, as I'm going to see it with my father next week and he's already bought tickets. Would you mind elaborating?

It's completely fine to mostly-miss the point!

Tale of Tales is visually gorgeous, the story is a disjointed, illogical mess (even by fairytales logic).

Okay! Thanks very much for letting me know. I was worried that it was darker/grittier/gorier than Pan's Labyrinth. Phew. Illogical may not make for a satisfying experience, and I'll brace for that, but at least I hope it will not be distressing.

It's pretty dark and gory in places, though. I haven't seen Pan's Labyrinth so I can't compare, but the most notable bits I can remember is the woman getting flayed alive, the (implied) rape in another woman's storyline plus what happens when she gets rescued. There's also a giant flea.

Sorry, if I'd known that was what you were looking for, I would have said so. Should have anyway, tbh.

Eesh. Thanks especially for the flaying warning. D:

This is not quite the father-daughter bonding activity I would prefer, but OH WELL, maybe we'll laugh about it some time later.
