Summary: Tatooine is not Jakku is not Tatooine. And yet.

In which Rey, Anakin and luke go on a roadtrip through the desert because The Force.

Origianlly I started writing this as an experiment in characterisation: "Compare and contrast the protags of the Star wars trilogies!" Specifically Anakin and Rey; they're very similar but they do have their differences. When I decided to use this as the starter for the remix, I did so because the involvement of all three of them made it easy for the fic to be remixed in a lot of directions/the remixers wouldn't be stuck in one trilogy. I deliberately left some of the Luke stuff obscure as a hook for remixes, actually -- which nobody used. Luke never says he forgot any of it!

It's an odd fic to describe.

On a surface level it is about a roadtrip and about 50% landscapeporn by volume. On a slightly deeper level, it's about all of them acting as each other's -- spirit guides isn't quite the right word -- catalyst to a shift in their connection with the Force (for Rey it's her "Awaken[ing]", for Anakin it's "the first step [he] took on the road to being Darth Vader").

On an even deeper level it's about what the Force actually is. This fic wouldn't look the way it does without Rogue One and the way everyone just starts dying as soon as their part is done -- the Force doesn't need them anymore.

Rey said, "Did you really expect the Force to be kind?"

"Does the desert care about the grain of sand? Does the ocean care about the wave? Does the night sky care about the star? No. Why then should the Force care for any individual life?" Rey spoke, and the words tumbled out of her mouth without her knowing where they came from. "Some are brighter or best beloved or chosen, but in the end the storm comes, the dawn rises and the wave must break."

As befits a story about both Rogue One and the Paris Commune, everybody dies -- in the same way they die in Rogue One, even.

This assignment was enormous amounts of fun to write and the entire last scene was written in a kind of fugue state. This is the fic I mean when I said one of them was "glaringly, obviously mine": Paris Commune! Super strong friendships! Doing the right thing because it's the right thing to do! Tragedy! The difference between peace and justice!

Campaign (Podcast) (Any of: Tamlin Jorun, Bacta (Campaign), Synox, Avaa Arek, Lyntel’luroon)

I LOVE THIS DYSFUNCTIONAL SPACE FAMILY WITH ALL MY HEART (Also, when Lyn got confirmed as canonically queer I texted a friend immediately -- she is is the queer alien Indiana Jones of my heart. MORE LYN ON SPACE ARCHEOLOGY ADVENTURES!) Tamlin is THE CUTEST and the Tamlin-narrated noir episodes are probably my favourites -- I have a very real weakness for noir. Bacta is very good at giving me clone feelings (and lol forever at the "I like your voice" exchange with Zevowk). Also, the "Bacta Basics" podcast totally exists in-universe; what's not to love about a fact-based podcast ran by fugitives from the Empire. Leenik's friendship with Avaa is endlessly charming (her and Zero is also A++). I would love something about Synox and the animated program he's on -- wait. What if Tamlin's a fan? (The tag for this is my general Star Wars tag.)

Yoko Tsuno (Comics) (Yoko Tsuno/Khany)

I'd love something about how Khany and Yoko keep being ultimate-long-distance (girl)friends! Role reversal AU! Khany the human, Yoko the Vinean. A canon-divergent AU in which the Vineans didn't leave Earth and/or went public over their own existence. ~~Fix-it for Le dragon de Hong Kong~~. Timetravel! 100% guaranteed Vinea has the tech somewhere and why should Yoko get all the fun? Vinea (and surrounding space) travelogue. Something about the telepathic communication headbands malfunctionning, be that losing all communication or amplifying too much communications. Vinea and Earth vs The Galactic Empire (or other bad guys). AU in which Yoko is trapped on Vinea. Also I like the robots. (My tag for this fandom is here.)

Yet as days turned in weeks, without any sign of Shiro, one member of Voltron couldn’t help but keep thinking about the revelation.

In an abstract sort of fashion, Pidge had always been fascinated by Haggar from the moment she’d learned about her. Sure, she was a crazy space witch. A psychotic alien who had tortured Shiro and who knew how many others. She’d created the Robobeasts that they’d fought multiple times. Logically, Pidge shouldn’t want to know anything more about her than she absolutely had to.

Pidge can't resist the opportunity to find out more about Haggar. She's not sure about what she finds.

There may be venting (most likely under-lock) because let me tell you, I have not missed the ao3 nomination approval interface and especially not its tendency to throw 404s at me when I've just validated a bunch of noms, aaaaaaaargh. /the glamorous life of a fandom mod

I've seen a bunch of movies lately I haven't talked about on here -- and should -- Arrival (Hollywood scifi), Patients (French slice-of-life/biography) and Hidden Figures/Les Figures de l'ombre (US Historical) all of which were good.

I also saw Logan. Look. I have been for X-23 on the big screen for literally over a decade. I cannot overstate this: the very first time X-23 appeared, in a season 3 episode of X-Men:Evolution, I was sitting in front of my TV going "SHE IS THE GREATEST AND HER FEET CLAWS ARE THE COOLEST". Based on that, you'd think I would have had high expectations for this movie, but the thing is, I didn't, mostly because I didn't believe it was actually real. Like. There's an X-23 movie????? Is this the real life? But I have to say this was an awesome X-23 movie. Also SHE IS THE GREATEST AND HER FEET CLAWS ARE THE COOLEST.

Young Rebels in love! Contrast between Leia being a Rebels pretty much since birth and Sabine being a former Imperial cadet. The story of how Sabine's starbird became the symbol of the Rebellion. Sabine in General Organa's Resistance! Senators Wren and Organa of Mandalore and Alderaan.

Phasma/Rey

F/F SIZE DIFFERENCE! I'm totally down for both Phasma being human and her not being -- likewise, her being undercover Resistance, or not. Canon compliance and canon divergence also both great. Role reversal AU! Rey in the First Order. Phasma in the Resistance.

Rey & Anakin Skywalker

TERRIFYINGLY POWERFUL ANGRY DESERT CHILDREN! I love both Rey and Anakin so hard and I love all the parallels between them. Time-travel! Canon-divergent AUs! Force ghosts! Rey as Anakin's padawan! Roleswap, Rey as Obi-Wan's padawan, Anakin as the Jakku orphan. Straight-up reincarnation fic.

Rey & Darth Maul

Given that Maul has more lives than a cat, I bet he's still around circa TFA. Honestly, I love Maul's kindly old man/hilarious asshole thing he's got going in Rebels and I feel like giving Rey a morally grey mentor would be interesting. Not to mention he wields a saberstaff -- their partnership/mentorship/apprenticeship is meant to be!

Rey/CT-7567 | Rex

TRAGICALLY SEPARATED BY ONE LETTER OF THE ALPHABET :( But seriously I feel like they have a lot in common. They both are extremely loyal, for example. Rex's animosity and Rey's kindness towards droids could make for an interesting contrast. Time travel would be awesome -- Rey would adopt all of the battledroids, hahaha.

Rey/Jyn Erso

Timetravel! Canon-divergence! Battle-hardened Rebellion veteran and hero Jyn Erso giving Rey her kyber crystal pendant for Rey's saber. Stardust and the girl who dreams of stars. Jyn closes her eyes on Scarif and awakens on Jakku. Rey goes to visit Jedha's Holy City.

Riyo Chuchi & Maketh Tua

A Galactic Republic Senator and an Imperial Minister walk into a bar... I'm super curious what became of Chuchi after the Empire happened and I am also super curious how Tua got where she did. Maybe a fix-it in which Tua doesn't die? If you feel like making this Riyo Chuchi/Maketh Tua instead, that's cool with me.

Riyo Chuchi & Mon Mothma

The beginnings of the Rebellion! The later years of the Rebellion -- maybe something set post-Rogue One? I've always wondered how someone could be both an Imperial Senator and a Rebel. How does that even work, schedule-wise? Again, would also be cool with Riyo Chuchi/Mon Mothma.

Riyo Chuchi/CT-7567 | Rex

Chuchi's drive to the right thing is really impressive and matches Rex's -- and since it's a plotpoint in "Trespass" that recognises the personhood of people others might not, it'd make sense she'd see the clones as people. And Rex seriously needs a hug. The fallout from "Trespass" -- or a missing scene -- could be super interesting, but so could something set at another time.

Sabine Wren/Numa

I would love something dealing with Sabine's art. Maybe she completes Numa's armour. I like that Sabine and Numa fall into "the enemy of my enemy" but that doesn't mean they're above taking each other out for the cause. They have a mutual love for explosions and fuck up the Empire's shit!

Demigods Series - Rick Riordan

Characters: Luke Castellan, Rachel Elizabeth Dare
Worldbuilding: Children of Hecate and the Titan War, Oracle of Delphi (Demigods Series), Possession by a Titan

I feel like there are the pretty obvious pairings of Luke + Possession and Rachel + Oracle, but the reverse on those could also be interesting, either in canon (Luke & his mother the Oracle, Rachel and hitting Titans in the face) or in a role-reversal AU. Children of Hecate could go either way with being with Luke or Rachel. And of course I am always up for Rachel & Luke (or Rachel/Luke, why not) shenanigans.

Marvel Cinematic Universe

Characters: Wanda Maximoff
Worldbuilding: Relationship between magic and science

Over in the Thor movies the MCU took great pains to make magic super-advanced science. But then there's Wanda. If you want to explore this via interaction between Wanda and Thor, that'd be cool, but I would also love Wanda + Tony or Wanda solo vs Science. (Fyi, I haven't seen Doctor Strange.)

Marvel Secret Wars Battleworlds

FUCK YEAH BATTLEWORLD! I love Battleworld. No lie, Secret Wars was my favourite event in ages. It gave excellent Doom and Valeria. And the worldbuilding potential was fascinating. I don't understand how the Jedi can (a) think they're the good guys and (b) say there's no slavery in the Republic when they're literally fighting this war with an army of enslaved child soldiers. Like. WTF? Also, that dream mission Fives as he's dying, what is that? I'm kind of sad we never got to see Maul on Mandalore, especially Maul vs Mandalore. I'm super curious about Pantoran culture -- like, what do those tatoos mean? And in-universe fandom is my favourite thing.

Stargate Atlantis

I just want to know everything about the Wraith, okay? ALL THE THINGS. Also, I loved loved loved that bit in Last Man where Ronon and Todd (briefly) work together and sacrifice themselves for the same cause, so anything with a Todd + Ronon team-up would be aces. I also love Todd and Teyla's relationship, as well as his relationship with John.

Voltron: Legendary Defender

Worldbuilding: Galra Empire, Blade of Marmora, Alteans

Haggar is the space witch/mad scientist mash-up of my heart. I want to know everything about her and the world she lives in -- who are her assistants? Why don't they have faces? Is she really Altean? What does that mean to her? Can she get the slipperies? Is she Keith's mom? Do I ship her with Pidge? Yes. They could bond over mad science, it'd be cute/horrifying. I would also love to see her relationship with Shiro and/or Allura explored.

I saw the 1963 Cleopatra (the one with Liz Taylor) on the big screen recently and I gotta say...

HOT. DAMN.

My experience with live action adaptations of this period of history is limited to this movie, HBO's Rome and Astérix: Mission Cléopatre, all of which are excellent in their various ways.

Cleopatra cost about 42 millions to make and every single cent is on the screen. It's, to put it simply, gorgeous. Not just because Liz Taylor is Liz Taylor or because the costumes are fabulous -- although she is and they are -- but because the cinematography of every single shot is a thing of beauty.

Liz Taylor is AMAZING as Cleopatra and hands down my favourite Cleopatra. (Monica Bellucci is a close second, Rome's a very distant third.)

She carries the entire four hours with a fantastic performance of a woman who is ambitious, a keen politician, proud, strong, kind and aware at all times of her image and how she can use it. I loved every single time she laid a verbal smackdown on Romans, which was often. She's also gorgeous and dressed in fabulous -- if with disctintive 50s/60s body shape -- costumes.

All the other actors were also really good! Rufio was my second favourite (after Cleopatra), Charmian and Eirnas broke my heart at the end, I really liked Flavius and Apollodore too.

Their Caesar was not my favourite, because that's the one from Mission Cléopatre (I don't like Caesar, so the one where he's made fun of is obviously my favourite), but he's much better than Rome's Caesar. [That's not all that hard, but this is still a damn good Caesar. ] Quite frankly Rome's Caesar doesn't even place.

I preferred Rome's Mark Antony because he was funnier, but it's honestly a very close call. This is a damn good Mark Antony. I still liked Rufio better though.

I wasn't convinced by their Octavian when the intermission rolled around (PRAISE BE TO THE INTERMISSION -- I really needed to stretch my legs) but he won me over by the end. He got the delicate balance of Augustus being both a shrewd political mind and A Weird. I think the HBO crack team of SIMON WOODS and Max Pirkis were better, but they got two whole seasons while this guy got two whole hours.

Despite knowing every beat of the story, I still got caught up in it. This is quality tragedy.

The way the movie was shot -- the kind of shots, etc -- was very interesting for how it contrasted with modern cinematography. More wide shots, less close-ups.

There was a moment when someone said the words "civil war" and I thought back on the old MCU Civil War memes -- tbh, I think I enjoyed this movie better than CACW as CACW was far too fast-paced for me to process emotionally. This movie is much slower but that gives room for the emotions to breath and be felt.

(Cleopatra also claims Hannibal had epilepsy, which was the first I'd heard of this.)

Also, this movie reminded me how much I would love to read/watch/etc an alternate history in which Cleopatra allies with Augustus, be that after Actium or instead of Mark Antony or whatever. (Cleopatra/Augustus optional, but welcome.)

Also also, for all we know Cleopatra gave birth to a daughter and Cesarion is someone else's son.

Also also also, I really like Roman armour.

IN CONCLUSION: WATCH THIS AND WATCH IT ON A BIG SCREEN IF YOU CAN.

The relationship between Greed and Ling is fascinating and I would totally be up for fix-it, if that strikes your fancy. Tbh, I started shipping Winry/Paninya the moment Winry started gushing about the craft of Paninya's automail. Winry + Scar is the FMA relationship I wish we'd seen SO MUCH MORE of -- it's so complex and human and lovely.

Historical RPF (Hannibal Barca/Scipio Africanus)

I have a MASSIVE thing for enemies who care about and respect each other and those two hit it IN SPADES.

Feel free to have them meet at times they haven't (as far as we know) met, like after Cannae or Zama. Anything expanding on the meeting at Ephesus would also be brilliant. I am, always and forever, of the opinion that they both faked their own deaths to elope together. The AU in which they're both Roman! Or both Carthaginian! The AU in which they switch places. The AU in which it is a Pun-ic War (I LIKE PUNS). An AU in which the war goes differently -- maybe Rome surrenders after Cannae. Slavish devotion to historical accuracy not required! I really enjoyed all the politics episodes in Clone Wars, and not just because they featured Padmé. I just enjoy fictional power games a lot. I love both Padmé and Riyo Chuchi a lot! Either/both of them (plus Ahsoka?) being friends and doing politics and/or investigating a crime would be cool. I really love Ahsoka too! Her and Steela would be an awesome couple -- maybe future fic circa Rogue One? The relationship between Plo Koon and Wolfee, be it shippy or gen, gets me right in the clone feelings.

I canon-reviewed and came up with semi-plotty (sort of shippy) gen post-canon fic. I have no idea if my recip is familiar with Fear Itself as an event (pro tip for people requesting franchises in exchanges: specify which parts you're familiar with), but hopefully the plot point in the fic that rests on that is explained well enough in text. I'm mostly happy with this fic, even if it's a bit rushed.

CURRENTLY AIRING SHOWS

Star Wars Rebels: S03E08 & S03E09: Those two eps focused mostly on Ezra and Kanan, who I don't really care for. (Quite frankly at this point the only explanation for Ezra's Hondo-related stupidity is that loves has blinded him.) I totally called the revel in "Inside Man", but I thought they'd leave it for the finale. But it was super well done! I loved everyone's reactions from Zeb's apologectic "I didn't kill him, so I guess we're friends?????" to Hera still not trusting Kallus to Chopper's enthusiasm. ALSO NEXT EPISODE WE GET MAUL YES

Lucifer: S02E10 & S02E11: Also a show with a reveal that was well done but came unexpectedly early. The show also keeps throygh expected characters into situation where they have to interact and it's great -- Dr Linda and Lucifer's mom? DAN and Lucifer's mom? Amenadiel and CHLOE's mom? Who also apparently knows Maze, I want to see that! I continue to really enjoy this stupid show and really look forward to the second half of the season.

The Librarians: S03E02 & S03E03: Also quite fun. I feel like this season is slightly too manichean in its views of Egyptian and Norse myths and/or that our interpretations don't quite match up. I prefer my Frost Giants not as evil but as amoral forces of nature -- but lol at Stone telling a roomful of Frost Giants his favourite natural disaster was global warming at their reactions. I'm going to headcanon that Anubis was under Apep's influence in the werewolf episode.

Legends of Tomorrow: S02E07: This was the final episode of some sort of crossover I didn't follow. I ship Sara/Kara now, idc that they're in different universe.

Class: S01E07 & S01E08: Episode 7 is made of tropes I love (people coming to care about each other despite differing interests! PEOPLE MEETING THEIR GODS AND RAGING AT THEM) so that was amazing. It's even a fucking roadtrip episode, in a way. My favourite of the eps this season. The season finale was also quite good, if heartbreaking. There's something almsot poetic in Charlie having to kill April to be able to use the cabinet when she was the one who made it so he didn't have to use it the last time. I thought the show would pull its punch with that and have Charlie's people show up again, but no. MATTEUSZ LIVES! I was so worried about him and Tanya but they both lived!

Luke Cage: S1E010: I feel like I'm watching this more out of obligation that anything by now. I just DO NOT CARE about Diamondback. And there goes the obligatory CAin and Abel reference.

Miraculous Ladybug: S01E03 to S01E16: This show is super cute! And continues to give excellent Paris, despite how empty the streets are (animation budget!). I have vague amorphous thoughts about Paris and this show and this show in general, but for now suffice to say that what I ship most is not the two-pople love square but Alya/Ladybug.

Nirvana in Fire: E06: Have made no progress.

One of the things I wanted to do with this exchange was to treat at least one of: femslash, hero/villain and crosstime ship. At one point I decided to see if there were any requested relationships that fit all three and there was! So I wrote Rey/Asajj Ventress femslash.

I'd originally come up with the idea of Palpatine dying in the crash early in Revenge of the Sith causing Grievous to be in charge of the Separatists and that causing the war to last for decades in order to write Rey/Rex and/or any clone/TFA person pairings, but there weren't any. Rex still gets to be around because I say so, that's why. This is a fun verse and I may end up writing more in it. (In case you're curious: yes, the clones still have the chip for Order 66 implanted.)

Making Rey Anakin's padawan was a given and I loved getting the opportunity to write her as a more traditional kind of Jedi, if not a totally traditional one. My favourite passage I wrote for this exchange in fact relates to Rey, the Jedi and meditation: To Rey, the edge of meditation always felt like being back on Jakku, standing at the top of a dune, nothing to see but endless sand and the unforgiving horizon. It wasn't the vastness of the space between stars that reminded her of her place in the universe -- it was a favoured metaphor of some Jedi, that every Jedi was a star and the Force the galaxy -- it was the desert, immortal and infinite. Every Jedi a grain of sand, the Force the desert.

A last minute treat. I think I submitted this five hours before the stories went live or something. I've low-key shipped this ever since those two referred to each other as "good friends" on screen. They're really cute and also Riyo's got blue skin to Ahsoka orange so they're complimentary.
