dhampyresa: (A most terrible case of the Star Wars)
I wrote the starter story for [community profile] starwarsrollingremix . It was then remixed in three different directions. I originally tried to arrange the remix so it'd finish before Night on Fic Mountain started, but oops.

In which Rey, Anakin and luke go on a roadtrip through the desert because The Force.

Origianlly I started writing this as an experiment in characterisation: "Compare and contrast the protags of the Star wars trilogies!" Specifically Anakin and Rey; they're very similar but they do have their differences. When I decided to use this as the starter for the remix, I did so because the involvement of all three of them made it easy for the fic to be remixed in a lot of directions/the remixers wouldn't be stuck in one trilogy. I deliberately left some of the Luke stuff obscure as a hook for remixes, actually -- which nobody used. Luke never says he forgot any of it!

It's an odd fic to describe.

On a surface level it is about a roadtrip and about 50% landscapeporn by volume. On a slightly deeper level, it's about all of them acting as each other's -- spirit guides isn't quite the right word -- catalyst to a shift in their connection with the Force (for Rey it's her "Awaken[ing]", for Anakin it's "the first step [he] took on the road to being Darth Vader").

On an even deeper level it's about what the Force actually is. This fic wouldn't look the way it does without Rogue One and the way everyone just starts dying as soon as their part is done -- the Force doesn't need them anymore.
Rey said, "Did you really expect the Force to be kind?"

"Does the desert care about the grain of sand? Does the ocean care about the wave? Does the night sky care about the star? No. Why then should the Force care for any individual life?" Rey spoke, and the words tumbled out of her mouth without her knowing where they came from. "Some are brighter or best beloved or chosen, but in the end the storm comes, the dawn rises and the wave must break."

I should also thank [tumblr.com profile] lunikus for letting ramble at length about this and helping me solve some of the issues with it.
dhampyresa: (Epic shit happening on the internet)
1. [community profile] starwarsrollingremix went live! 12 fics enter, one fic leaves -- wait, that's Thunderdome. Nevermind. Twelve fics, all of them remixes of another, except the first one.

2. [community profile] fanifesto is now a thing that people are posting to! YAY!

3. [community profile] nightonficmountain signups are happening! You should check it out if you like small fandoms. (I need to signup myself.)

I haven't mentionned here yet that I'm modding [community profile] starwarsrollingremix.

It's basically Fic Telephone in a galaxy far, far away. It's open to prequels, TFA and OT -- hopefully we'll get remixes in all three.
