I followed [livejournal.com profile] egelantier 's advice and watched The Secret of Kells. I'm kind of speechless, I have to admit. This movie is really really gorgeous and that goes for both the art (OMG THE ART) and the story (was I crying all over the ending? Yes I was). It's really beautifully drawn and animated and I loved all the characters. I wanted more of all of them, especially Aisling and Pangur the Cat and Brendan. Just, it's great, you should see it.

I also finished watching S1 of Sleepy Hollow. I really liked it! The screen was a bit too dark, I missed some valuable info in spots and had to go back a bit  because I was drawing and I don't know enough about US history to appreciate all the ways they play with it. (Who is Paul Revere, anyway?) I know most of the fandom ships Ichabod/Abbie, but I really like them as BFFs who would do anything for each other and I hope it stays this way. I just have a thing for very intense platonic bonds that are (one of) the most important relationships to someone. Which is also one of the reasons I like Wareghouse 13, by the way. For some reason, I kept expecting the reveal that Abbie wasn't the Witness but Jenny, but obviously that never happened. I really enjoyed Ichabod dealing with the 21rst century, because fish out of temporal water is always great. And I gotta say that was a very gutsy way to end a season and I'm with Ichabod the thing with the Golem was a jerk move.

I love Sleepy Hollow! The cheesy American history is so hilarious; I watched the series with some other non-Americans, and they also did not know who Paul Revere is. (Not that it's important, but he's famous for carrying word ahead to warn people that the British army was on its way. Why this should make him famous– as I'm sure enemy scouts have gone out before every army in history– I have no idea, but he's very much a household name in America.)

I'm also really expecting Jenny to have some sort of mystical destiny as well. There's always next season for more revelations!

It is so cheesy and hilarious, I love it. (Yeah, that does seem like a weird claim to fame, but they did set it up enough in the episode that I could follow without trouble, so props for that.)

I am excited for next season!

I love Sleepy Hollow too, such an enjoyable romp and it's filmed in a small city I used to live in so I also get to play "oh look, it's Kevin's old apartment." :D

Did they blow Kevin's old apartment? They film in the actual Sleepy Hollown, right? And 'enjoyable romp' is the perfect description!

No but they filmed around the water fountain outside. :D

While Sleepy Hollow is set in Westchester county in New York state, the TV show is actually filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina. Due to union dues, etc., it's really expensive to film in the North East and California so many US TV shows are actually filmed in the South or in Canada.

In fact, it's easy to spot if you're really familiar with the US as the flora and fauna are all wrong. For instance, TV's "Sleepy Hollow" is full of Live Oaks bearing Spanish moss, something you'd never see in New York state as it's too cold there.

I had no idea! I knew lots of shows filmed in Canada, but I thought that since the setting was so important to the plot, they'd film on location.

Only, in some ways, the setting isn't very important to the plot. It's not like Person of Interest where New York is basically a character in the story in its own right.

Sleepy Hollow required a small town, some old farmhouses/cabins from the right period and some overgrown countryside. The Wilmington areas has those in spades.

Dino De Laurentis built his film studios in Wilmington, North Carolina to avoid having to deal with the unions and excessive filming costs and they've been filming things there ever since. The giant water tank they've used in action films like the Bond films is located there. The small town of Wilmington has a downtown that passes well for certain parts of New York.

I tend to assume that since it's named after the place, the place is important. Plus, there are all these shots of the map in the intro.

That is super cool!

aw, i'm glad my misunderstanding ended up in awesomeness! this is an amazing movie.

and sleepy hollow is my new SHINY SOURCE OF JOY, with how brazenly silly it's in plot and pacing, and how true to heart in characters and relationships between them (in my mind, it's the best combination. see also: leverage).

It is so amazing! Thank you for pointing me towards it.

It is so shiny and silly but true to heart and yes that is also exactly why I love Leverage!
