dhampyresa: (Sad Cassie is sad)

So! Way back in October/September 2012, Journey into Mystery was ending and it was announced that both kid!Loki and Kate Bishop would be in the new Young Avengers series. I took a stab at a fancomic for this team-up (and then there were more team-ups). I drew and wrote the whole thing, but I never ended up inking or colouring it. I'm certainly not doing it now, because the art is so old; I feel like I should redo the whole thing and I remember how sick of it I was when I drew it the first time and that was 18+ months ago.

I kind of forgot about it until [livejournal.com profile] ericadawn16 reminded be of it with a comment on something else, so I pulled up Photoshop and added word ballons to the original artwork, did a couple of edit-y things to it (not much, i'm working with a mouse, it's not easy) and now I'm posting it.

The lay-out is two pages at once, so you should only read until the middle mark, then down, then up at the middle mark. Like if you were holding it as a book (this is because of formatting and the double-page spreads).

page01small

Coloured speech bubbles, because I never figured out how to do borders and white on white doesn't show. Default Photoshop speech bubble format, too, which means the bubbles aren't always pointing in the best direction. Hence, coloured speech bubble so who is speaking is clearer.

page02-03small

Because CASSIE! I like how the photograph turned out.

page04-05small

Double page spread, fancy! (Imagine a space-time continuum in the background.)

page06-07small

Enter Leah. I am not entirely sure why Kate is so violent. I know I had a good reason, but that was years ago.

page08-09small

Leah to the rescue. I'm trying to keep everyone's relative heights consistent.

page10-11small

It's not clear from the scan, but Leah is cutting a piece of Kat's hair off and using some of her blood to draw a magic circle.

page12-13small

(Lol, fancy lettering.) Originally, if I was going to colour it, I was going to give Hela Kate's hair colour instead of Leah's.

page14-15small

More timetravel in a double-page spread.

page16-17small

Kate recognises the bow as being a spare bow she had two years ago. I like the eyes and the panel with everyone with their heads together.

page18-19small

An explanation: Cassie is actually holding Jonas with her in her bubble. Yeah, this is going to be a fix-it for both YA and JiM and it is going to fix all the things.

page20-21small

Hela's hair is super fun to draw. (Also, remember what I said about Jonas? Notice how Cassie's fist stays closed.)

page22-23small

featuring guest art by Jim Cheung. Three guesses as to which panel it's in and the first two don't count. Vague attempts at body langauge are happening.

page24-25small

I did not draw that skyline or that map.

page26-27small

I like Cassie's expression in the first panel of the second page.

page28-29small

Double-page timeskip!

page30-31small

I think the panel of Valeria!Doctor Doom + Leah vs Ilyana!Queen of Hell has more details than the rest of the page combined.
page32

Aw yeah, hugs!

So there you have it, the reason I am not a comics professional.

YAY! You posted it!

Wow, I totally need YA icons.

This could have been an interesting twist. As it is, I don't remember Cassie even being mentioned much at all?

I really want to go back and read the early stuff especially now that I have Cassie in my fanfiction. I was also thinking about reading The Runaways, have you read that one?

They also ended up doing Leah very differently. It's interesting to think of her as Hela as a girl. I usually forget that aspect. I like the eyes, too. It reminds me of some of the artwork for the most recent Black Widow series even though you did this way before that one.

I really like that you bought Cassie back.

What do you think of the Cassie/Kate ship?

I AM SO PISSED CASSIE WASN'T MENTIONNED IN V2 AT ALL. Like. Seriously. You know the whole reason Billy and Teddy gave up superheroing? It was Cassie. You'd think that'd rate at least a mention.

Well, if you're writing Cassie, you should definitely read the comics the appears in, yes. (Okay, maybe not all of them, because lol comics timeline, but YAv1 for sure.) V1 also has some pretty awesome Kate moments.

I have read Runaways, but I didn't follow it as it came out, so I'm less attached to it than YA (I jumped on the bandwagon somewhere around the middle of Children's Crusade. Yeah. Yeah). There a couple of Runaways/Young Avengers crossover issues set during events and Molly+Tommy have one of the best friendship in comics.

YAv2 didn't have Leah in it at all, it was all Loki's subconscious, so I feel kind of cheated, but on the other hand, it means that Leah as "the evil ex" never existed, which good, because ew, gross, much?

I am super honoured you said my art reminded you of Phil Noto's; he's a brilliant artist.

Hands down, my favourite version of Cassie's return is this one (and not just because it was written for me, but because it is everything I wanted in a Cassie-returns fic and a few things I didn't).

I tend to SHIP ALL THE SHIPS, but given that Cassie's only fifteen/sixteen when she dies, I have trouble seeing it as sexual (implied is okay, explicit not so much). I friendship it super super hard, though.

I used to be firmly in the Cassie and Kate didn't like each other that way, but now that I'd read more and all...I think it's very plausible that they experimented with kissing and hugging. No, I wasn't thinking sexual since they are so young.
