Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Apr. 6th, 2014 09:33 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I just saw Winter Soldier and I loved it! It was great.
I went to see it with a girl I've met once before, who is the daughter of a former roomate's of my mom's, and who is coincidentally not on the other side of the Atlantic but in Ireland this semester as well. I like her! I really like her and we're going to go to the zoo at some point in the future and I am excited (and I will buy that elephant plushie I've been wanting to buy since one of my housemates went to the zoo and bought one).
I loved it, the cinematography was awesome, there was a bunch of really cool shots, Falcon was super badass, Black Widow is THE BEST and there were appearances by characters I did not expect.
Btw, it has two credits scenes, just so you know.
We got trailers for: Gardians of the Galaxy (Gamorra is so pretty!), Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Great CGI Spider-Man! Also GWEN STACY♥), X-Men: Days of Future Past (why would you look at this storyline and think 'this could use more Wolverine'? aslo they're going to be in Paris at some point hahaha no). We also had a trailer for Giro d'Italia, because this is apparently a thing now. I feel like my brother would have enjoyed this trailer much more than me, because he's a big (big!) cycling fan and it did look kind of cool on the big screen ngl.
Steve and his popculture list! I loved that. I didn't get to catch everything on it: Star Wars/Trek, The Beatles, WorldCup 1966. (Apparently different locations got different things, I wonder what's on the French list?) Also "No polio is good" FUCK YEAH IT IS
"I'm here to pick up a fossil." LMAO NAT Does she sit around at home coming up with Steve-is-old jokes? And this very short exchange between Nat and Sam made me ship it. "How you doing?" and she was totally checking him out.
I spent the whole part of the movie where they were speaking French with my hands over my mouth so I wouldn't disturb the others in the theatre. It's not that the French was wrong, because it was all grammatically correct, if not always thing people would say ("La ligne est morte" lol nope), but the accents! Mostly okay, but clearly not native speakers. There was this one dude who put an é where there shouldn't have been one (in the place of a silent e, so clearly noone had pronounced the line for him), so his line sounded like gibberish to me, yay subtitles! I could just about rationalise the accents away as the goons speaking French as courtesy to Batrok BUT THEN Batrok opened his mouth and I just kind of lost it. HAHAHA That is the purest Québecois accent I have ever heard, lmao. The girl I saw it with told me no one in the US would notice, which I can believe easily, but trust me that was as plain as the nose in the face to me. It's just so Québecois! There is no way that accent can pass itself as France French or Algerian French (not that Algerian French sounds all that different from France French, but since they made a big deal of Batrok being Algerian, I thought I'd mention it). I did like the shout-out to the DGSE, because hey that actually is the acronym for the French external intelligence agency. Overall, I liked the care that was put into the French-y parts of the movie (not like in Agents of SHIELD when Ward tries to pass himself of as a waiter because he's not fooling anyone). But still Québecois.
I loved Nat's fight scene and how it contrasted with Steve: he took care to not kill his goons, she didn't care so long as they were out of the way. Aslo, YAY WIDOW'S BITE
Cap + Batrok was a great fight scene and I did like that Cap sounded not fluent in French, but still competent.
On the one hand: yes, Natasha having other objectives without Steve knowing wasn't the best idea, but on the other hand: Steve, maybe now is not the time?
I loved loved the whole kill-Fury sequence, because omg people being competent? On both sides? Bestill my beating heart. Also, "The air conditioning is 100% operational" was hilarious. I clapped when Fury got out. What's in those lasers, man, seriously.
I will never get tired of Natasha trying to set Steve up or Steve jumping from building to building. Also WINTER SOLDIER DISAPPEARING ACT where'd he go?
Lol like anyone believed Fury was dead. Still a very emotional scene between Natasha and Fury. MAria Hill! I had no idea she was going to be in this! I am so happy.
Steve, that's not a very secure location to stash important, top secret info, as Natasha proves later on. (What did she do with all the bubble gum? Did a bunch of lucky kids just get spy sweets?) "I only pretend to know everything", oh Nat♥
"Public displays of affection make people very uncomfortable" / "Yes they do" and "Still uncomfortable?" / "That's not the word I'd use" lol Steve and don't ask how I know this, but the whole "going on the walk" vs "going on the run" thing is actually really good advice: running draws people attention. Just walk like you know excatly where you want to go and keep calm and carry on.
WHAT. Swiss HYDRA scienticist on magnetic tape because why not, I guess? Like seriously? A) Whas there really no one you could have kept on tape SHIELD and B) MAGNETIC TAPE ARE JOKING? How has no one converted Zola to a more portable format yet? Never mind deterioration of the tapes over time, what about access time?
So Nat was born in 1984 but worked for the KGB, an organisation that was dissolved in 1991, meaing she was all of seven when it ended. I can sort of see her as a seven-year old agent given her comics Red Room backstory, but it doesn't fit her dialogue, which seems to imply she made a cnscious choice to leave the KGB for SHIELD so idk wht's going on here. I hope it's that she's the Soviet response to the Super Soldier Serum, like in the comics and that the 1984 birthdate is a lie. (Also 1984? Coincidence? I think not.)
Yeah, let's just crash on Sam's couch. "I made breakfast, if you people eat that sort of thing" aww Sam
I loved the Winter Soldier's face when he lost his facemask 'my face maaaaaaaaaaask ): D:'. I just found it weirdly adorable. It was a really great fight scene and Nat hiding in the bridge's shadow to shoot him so he couldn't pinpoint her location using her shadow was great. As was her trying to get people out of the way later and using a recording to draw his fire and aaaaah she was great!
Sudden Hill appearance, yay! And the return of the traditional laser-on-steroids hole in the floor.
Can take a moment to point out that this scene has Black Widow (woman), Falcon (black man), Fury (black man) and Hill (woman) to Steve's (white man). I liked that. Iliked that A LOT.
Stan Lee cameo! And hahaha, the shield placement.
Falcon's wings oh yesssssssssssssssssssssss
No Sitwell :( I liked him. Also lol wut Stephen Strange what. So far they've been passing off magic as super advanced technology, but how do you do that with THE SORCERER SUPREME?
Hey, it's that guy from Community!
I liked Cap's speech. Like, I really liked it. What can I say, I really love it when people believe in people and people do the right thing. I really loved this whole section of the movie where regular people stood up for the right thing, because 'I was just following orders' is a bullshit excuse once you know how bad your orders are. I loved that the technician refused to launch the helicarriers, even with a gun to his head and that Sharon saved him (Sharon♥!) and "Not if it's your switch" yes you go guy-who-looks-vaguely-like-Alexander-Siddig-but-is-not-Alexander-Siddig! I really wanted it to have been not!Merkel with the heroics, because yes older women kicking ass, but I will accept Black Widow as she is also awesome and kicks ass.
Literally. Is women kicking men out lines of fire athing in this movie? Yes (Sharon + Technician, Nat + Not!Siddig). Do I love that it is a thing? HELL YES.
That was a pretty tense moment for a bit there, although there is no way that the helicarriers could hit all their targets at once given that they weren't that far up and all in the same area. What about the targets in India, huh?
Bucky saving Steve even though he doesn't know it's Steve! (It could be that it's to repay Steve saving his life in the helicarrier.) I feel so terrible for the Winter Soldier. 'Let's just wipe his memories, lol' and he just goes with it, because it's all he knows and oh my heart. Also oh my heart in a similar way, old!Peggy. Memory loss, no :(
It did not expect to like the Council as much as I did. They were surprisingly likeable and badass (keeping a gun on Pearce! NOT YOUR SWITCH!).
"It's all online. And it's trending." Yes, best!
Fury's eye! I really did not expect that, but of course he would get double security clearance.
Omg when Nat stung herself to get Fury to shoot Pearce! NAT HOW YOU SO COOL
I loved the ending! Nat mouthing off on Capitol Hill, yes! Everyone going off in different directions, boo. Sharon in the CIA! Wth, Hill at Stark Industries? Steve and Sam roadtrip!
Mid credit scene: OMG IT'S WANDA and Pietro but mostly WANDA. She's one of my favourite characters in comics, I really hope they don't mess her up. But WANDA!
End credit scene: Aw Bucky! He believes Steve now, even if he doesn't remember.
In conclusion: I loved it as the fact that is entry is 1.6k will attest, but HAHAHA QUÉBECOIS.
In other news! I am now a mod of
nightonficmountain (also on Livejournal and Archiveofourown). It's pretty much exactly like yuletide except: in June, all characters in approved fanomas are allowed and inactive fandoms can also be allowed! I've never modded an exchange before, it's exciting! (Also, I came up with the name. I'm quite proud of it.)
I went to see it with a girl I've met once before, who is the daughter of a former roomate's of my mom's, and who is coincidentally not on the other side of the Atlantic but in Ireland this semester as well. Date: 2014-04-07 12:40 am (UTC)MOVIE. MOOOVIE. NAT. STEVE. BUCKY. SAM. HILL. EVERYONE'S FACES. I'm still unable to be coherent about this movie. I just. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
(And Bucky didn't kill Nat five years ago. He could have. He clearly doesn't care about causalities. And he didn't kill her. I just, oh, by still my multishipping heart.)
NAT. NATASHA. I LOVE HER.
She is the best.
And YES what you said about the WSC. Everyone in this movie was very interestingly nuanced.
I think I need to see movie a third time. Then maybe I can get back to being coherent.
(no subject)
Date: 2014-04-07 09:49 pm (UTC)I am barely coherent myself, see how many times I used exclaimation marks? (Also, you were right, everyone has faces omg such faces many faces wow.)
(Yeah, especially since that scar looks kind of small to be a through-and-through bullet wound with a riffle bullet. Do you ship ALL THE SHIPS in this movie? because I do.)
I KNOW RIGHT? SHE IS SO GREAT!
You know, this movie actually made me feel a lot better about the WSC's decision to nuke NYC in Avengers, because it showed that they do make the hard calls, but they're not hypocrites about it: they'll sacrifice the few to save the many, even if the few is family ("If you could save your daughters from terrorists with the flick of a switch, would you do it?" / "Not if it's your switch.")
Well, if you need to...

Date: 2014-04-07 09:55 pm (UTC)Dying and DED. Have the internets. (Yep! Me too. A friend has pointed out that 1984 is a year that a lot of shit went down in the Soviet Union, too, soooo I think it makes sense that that's the year she goes 'NOPE, OUT OF HERE, I AM SO DONE')
TOLD YOU. THEIR FACES. THEIR FACES DO THINGS. I CANNOT. I CANNOT. THEIR FACES. I actually have a friend over from the UK, and we keep just randomly whispers 'they have faces' at each other.
I ship just about everyone with everyone. I miiight even start to be converted to Steve/Bucky. (Look, they literally went down with the ship, okay. :| )
NAT. DEAREST DARLING NAT. STEVE. SAM. BUCKY. HILL. FURY. 'CAPTAIN'S ORDERS' AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
And yes! Exactly! I really, really liked how just about everyone was really nuanced and complicated. It was so, so, so great.
I think I might. For justice. And a 1500 word post-canon Bucky and Nat fic. Sigh, my life is such a trial.
(no subject)
Date: 2014-04-08 11:31 pm (UTC)They do have faces and it is a thing of beauty.
They did! I hadn't even noticed that.
It's not even like it's nuanced 'for a superhero movie', it's nuanced full stop.
Gosh, can I be a witness at that trial, to judge if that fic is evidence enough?
(no subject)
Date: 2014-04-11 11:39 pm (UTC)FACES. UGH. STUPID FACES.
it's nuanced full stop.
THIS, this so much.
Well, if you must INSIST on witnessing...She Walks Into Mine.

Date: 2014-04-07 11:59 am (UTC)I'm jealous of the trailors you got. We got weird stuff with robots and a timeloop, Noah, a sports movie, and something else, but no superhero movies.
(no subject)
Date: 2014-04-07 10:55 pm (UTC)Not even Gardians of the Galaxy? I thought for sure GoG since it's also Marvel. Weird. It makes sense to show superhero trailer in fornt of a superhero movie since your potential audience is likely already in the room. Lol Noah, that looks like a disaster.

Date: 2014-04-07 03:46 pm (UTC)I don't have a link handy, but as of yesterday, there is one super-cute piece of Sam/Natasha fic up on AO3!
I didn't know there were variations on the list shown! How neat! I couldn't read it all either, but the one I saw (in a theatre in the Midwestern U.S.) included I Love Lucy and Nirvana.
I could have done with less-choppy editing/camera work in some of the hand-to-hand sequences, but overall, the action was really satisfying. Loved Natasha's fight with the Winter Soldier especially.
Sebastian Stan - whose sad eyes make me feel a twinge even for his less-than-sympathetic characters - is well-cast as Bucky, who I presume will continue to be the woobiest of woobies.
Can take a moment to point out that this scene has Black Widow (woman), Falcon (black man), Fury (black man) and Hill (woman) to Steve's (white man). I liked that. Iliked that A LOT.
ME, TOO! It's a small thing, but it's so nice!
I am excited about Fic Mountain! My nominations are already in, because I am totally one of those dorks who was already thinking wistfully about Yuletide. It is a good name; you should be pleased!
(no subject)
Date: 2014-04-07 11:07 pm (UTC)Ifandom can start working on some fic.YAY, Sam/Natasha, I will go look for it!
I saw it in Ireland, and we definitely didn't get Nirvana or I love Lucy. I figured out the list thing because I mentionned Word Cup 66 to a French friend and they said World Cup 98, lol.
I think some of the hand-to-hand sequences could have done with being slightly slower or less choppy but they were so cool omg. I loved that fight too! And any time you could see the hydraulics in his arm work.
Yeah, for a guy who has barely any lines and spends most of the movie with a face mask, he was very emotive.
I am as big a dork as you are, since I'm modding it. I am super proud of that name, ngl.

Date: 2014-04-14 06:03 pm (UTC)LOL It's definitely not quite as dire as when I left IM3 mainly wanting fic for Maya Hansen and Chad Davis's mother and all the Extremis soldiers and Happy's nurse. At least the things I want out of this fandom are also the kind of things other people are interested in writing. For example, there exists Sam Wilson & Maria Hill friendship fic ! ♥
In this post and comments , people are comparing the different versions of the list. Apparently in France, The Fifth Element was listed; Luc Besson, represent!

Date: 2014-04-14 11:50 pm (UTC)OMG thanks for the link, that fic is amazing!

tl;dr FLAIL
Date: 2014-04-14 12:36 am (UTC)I DON'T KNOW but I love how she seems to have one for every occasion.
For the French I was all "well I guess my listening comprehension skills REALLY SUCK NOW" and then I found out later he was from Quebec (ironically).
Yes to Natasha's fighting! I love how all three of them are fighting and how she's actually really good at using the obstacles and landscape in her fighting. She swings under the bridge, uses the cars as cover, etc.
but on the other hand: Steve, maybe now is not the time?
Oh god yes, I wanted to yell at Steve to not do it then (also when he was questioning Natasha in the hospital, Steve this is classified secret stuff maybe an unsecured hospital room where anyone might walk in is not a good place??)
I legit believed Fury was dead. Not enough comics exposure, I think :P Usually if someone's dead then that's it, bye bye.
I had a clap-hand-over-mouth moment when I recognized Hill in the ship--I didn't recognize Sitwell but I did recognize Hill. sjdkdlfj Also when she was like "this helmet is compressing my brain" --> relieved giggles and <333
Wait, he put the gum there? ...I'm not very good at watching movies, I suck at putting together storylines.
I want ALL the marriages of convenience/pretend couples thing for Natasha/Steve. OK to be fair I wanted them before the film but I still do. I love how she explains the reasoning matter-of-fact and Steve replies a little bewildered that yes, public displays of affection make people uncomfortable.
Also when he says he's been kissed in the present day...he means Peggy right? *squints*
Bahaha I said the FSB/KGB thing to a friend and she was all "...most people don't care/know"
Sorry man, but LASERS ARE COOL. (I loved the lightsabres burning holes through six inches of steel too, in TPM and stuff. Ahh. So disappointed as a kid when my mum's laser pointer was just a dot of light.) Fury must know DC's underground passages pretty well--I guess that's why he was gunning for that part of the town.
Oh a shallow note oh my god Carter-as-an-agent was gorgeous. She was pretty as Steve's neighbour but in the SHIELD headquarters, omg.
Oh yeah, Fury's second eye! What a perfect cover.
I think I missed the part where Hill went to Stark Industries...I did see Stark tower when they were showing the targets of the Helicarrier though! That was cool.
Ungh I am embarrassingly attracted to Bucky as the Winter Soldier. (His hair. HIS FACE. I'll stop now.) ;___; to him just clinging to what Pierce says, because that's all he can go on, and maybe Pierce is a bit of/the only familiar face he knows. I LOOK FORWARD to him reganing his memory and Steve and him reconciling. They're the only people from their time now; Steve is so lonely and I look forward to him NOT BEING LONELY ANYMORE poor thing.
I also love how nice Sam was. 100% most likeable character I've ever seen in my life. GOD. His wings are so cool too.
In conclusion: sdjklfjiwo
Re: tl;dr FLAIL
Date: 2014-04-14 08:40 pm (UTC)I know! It was so great to finally see someone really use their surroundings while fighting.
My main reason for not thinking Fury was dead that (I thought there was) one more scene in the trailer with him in that hadn't been in the movie yet, which is a pretty flimsy reason, but on the other hand, Captain America movies have made a habit of people being presumed dead and not being dead (Bucky in First Avenger, Cap in First Avenger, Bucky in Winter Soldier, Zola in Winter Soldier, Fury in Winter Soldier...)
There was a close-up of the vending machine where you could see the thumbdrive behind the gum, then another where all the gum (and the thumdrive) were gone.
Pretend-couple Natasha/Steve! Sounds hilarious, especially if it's gen.
Mostly he means it as "omg Nat stop prying", I think.
Lasers are wicked cool! Just not able to do this sort of ting in real life. Fury gunning for that part of town on purpose because he knows the underground is so perfect! He's always steps ahead of everyone /headcanon accepted
I KNOW! She was so pretty, hot damn.
It's a very brief scene at the end, around Nat's Congress hearing and the scene at Fury's not!grave.
Ah, yes, your Winter Soldier feelings are my Winter Soldier feelings.
Sam is so nice and likeable and has super cool wings. I love love that this movie proves you can have decent people headlining a movie and have it still be interesting and a box-office success, because fuck grimdark, seriously.
Re: tl;dr FLAIL
Date: 2014-04-16 04:03 am (UTC)Now that I think about it, there are a lot of deaths-that-weren't-really-deaths. I mean, even Rumlow survives (I assume he was the badly burned person they wheel in). Hmm. That makes me feel a lot better. During Thor:TDW my thought process was basically "if Loki is dead I'm ragequitting" but Fury is a more fringe character and I thought they might milk the restructuring/leaderless angle of Fury's death.
Right, but I thought that just meant that it'd somehow been dropped there? Though on the other hand, I can't see the guy servicing the machine going "hm, someone dropped a thumb drive into my stock-up supplies? I'll put it in the machine!"
Buckyyy ;___; STEVE ;___; But it looks like Natasha is cheerful about making a new life/new covers! Aww, Natasha.
I think Fury is accustomed to thinking about seven steps ahead of everyone at all time. It's probably why he's still alive at this point. Most of the agents are quite young.
Yes! Honestly, CA:TWS is actually what I'd consider the darkest of the movies--along with perhaps IM--but manages to be pretty upbeat despite it. One of the really topical subjects is terrorism and the role of government and the meaning of security/freedom and just general uncertainty or fear. And that's reflected in TWS and also, I think, in both IM1 and IM3 (I think of the soldiers' apparent suicidal self-destruction, which everyone believes readily). But both IM and CA have lots of humour and a more balanced way of looking at things, I think, instead of just saying "modern society sucks".
Re: tl;dr FLAIL
Date: 2014-04-16 10:34 pm (UTC)I thought that implied that Steve had put it there, but how idk.
I think Natasha is either used enough to make new identities for herself that she enjoys it and how competent she is or so unused to not having her new identities created for her taht she looks forward to expanding her skill set.
His is not a line of work where people survive very long, so the fact that he's that old speaks to how competent he is.
It's a dark movie, but it's not grimdark. For me, grimdark is best exemplified by the quote that originated the term, the tagline for Warhammer 40,000: "IN THE GRIM DARKNESS OF THE FAR FUTURE THERE IS ONLY WAR". Where it works in Warhammer 40k is that it's somewhat tongue in cheek, it's ridiculous and it knows it and that's part of the fun. Unfortunately, that's not the case with the rets of the grimdark works, who are just pointlessly dark, man, dark as a substitute for substance. MCU movies can be quite dark, but they are also hopeful, have something to say and are not dark for the sake of being dark.

Date: 2014-05-11 01:03 am (UTC)That confused me too. I also wondered if the 1984 thing was just a cover birthday picked to have a significant year.
is women kicking men out lines of fire a thing in this movie?
I didn't pick up on that, but that's great.
I missed the second credit scene! I wonder if it's on YouTube yet....
