[personal profile] florianschild posting in [community profile] sunshine_revival
The tents and rides are all dismantled, the ground is littered with peanut shells, and the natural quiet of the fairgrounds is overtaking the cacophony that had been ever present just a few days ago. It's a calm quiet as well all go about packing up and getting ready to set off on our next adventure.

It's hard to believe this is the very last day of July 2025. The month may be over, but hopefully you found enough summer vibes to carry you through August and well into September (you know it's technically summer until September 21st)!

I know I personally had an absolute blast this month. I got to read so many lovely posts, reflections, poems, and more shared by all of the wonderful participants. I am incredibly grateful to everyone who participated and to the entire mod team for the amazing, amazing job they did. If I can be a bit self-indulgent, I'd encourage you to comment below with your impressions of this challenge. We'll take all thoughts! Let us know what you liked, what could have been better, and whether you'd like to see this challenge happen in July 2026. Maybe you want to suggest a theme for next year? The Carnival will surely have moved on by then. :)

You might also choose to write your own wrap-up post for the Sunshine Revival. It's not an official challenge, but consider it a bit of a bonus prompt:

Which challenges did you participate in? Did you find any new journals to follow? Did you learn anything, either about yourself or someone else? How did you feel this month? Maybe leave a note for your future self reminding them of the little, everyday memories that sometimes get blurred out with the passage of time.

If you do write a personal wrap-up, feel free to link to it in a comment as well!

If you're just finding the Sunshine Revival, you can still participate in the challenges. Just drop a comment linking to your post. There's no deadline and no pressure. Also, don't forget to follow [community profile] snowflake_challenge for the winter-themed big sister to this challenge. It's cozy and gingerbread-y and very fun.

Thank you again, everyone! I can't say it enough! It's amazing that you're here; you make this community really nice to be a part of. Have a lovely summer. <3

Katabasis, by R. F. Kuang

Katabasis releases at the end of August. I read an advance copy.

I have to conclude that R. F. Kuang's fiction is just not to my taste. This is the first book of hers that I even managed to finish, having previously given up on both Babel (anvillicious, with anvillicious footnotes) and The Poppy War (boring) quite early on. However, a lot of my customers love her books, so I will buy and sell multiple copies of this one.

The structure and concept of Katabasis is quite appealing. Alice Law is at magic college, obsessively determined to succeed. When exploitative working conditions lead to her making a mistake that gorily kills her mentor Professor Grimes, Alice still needs his recommendation... so she goes to Hell to fetch him back! She's followed by another student, Peter, who is a perfect genius who she doesn't realize is in love with her. Their journey through Hell takes up almost all of the book, interspersed by flashbacks to college.

Lots of people will undoubtedly love this book. I found it thuddingly obvious and lacking in charm. The humor was mildly amusing at best. The magic is boring and highly technical. Alice is frustratingly oblivious, self-centered, and monomaniacal - which is clearly a deliberate character choice, but I did not enjoy reading about her. Hell was boring - how do you make Hell boring?!

Spoilery reveal about Peter: Read more... )

The entire book, I felt like I was sitting there twiddling my fingers waiting for Alice to figure out that it's not okay for college to be exploitative and abusive, that it was bad for Professor Grimes to have sexually assaulted her, that Peter loved her, and that success isn't everything. Though at least it didn't have anvillicious footnotes [1] like Babel!

[1] Legally and morally, Professor Grimes sexually assaulted Alice. It is common for survivors of sexual assault to not recognize it as such at the time, especially when the assault involves an abuse of power. [2]

[2] It is an abuse of power for a professor to make any sexual overture to a student, even a seemingly consensual [3] one.

[3] Due to the power differential, no sexual relations between a professor and a student can ever be truly consensual.

I will continue to stock Kuang's books but this is probably the last time I will attempt to actually read one.

I do love the cover.

chocolate (CHAW-kuh-lit, CHOK-uh-lit, CHAWK-lit, CHOK-lit) - n., a food prepared from ground roasted cacao beans; a beverage made by mixing water or milk with this food; candy made from such a preparation, an individual piece of this candy; a dark reddish-brown color like that of chocolate.

Thanks, WikiMedia!

Like tomatoes and chiles, also originally from South America, but in this case first cultivated in what's now southeastern Ecuador before 3000 BCE, and thence spread throughout tropical Americas. The Spaniards encountered it in Mexico in 1520 as a drink consumed by the Aztecs, and it's generally believed they took the name for it from a Nahautl word, but while this word is often given as chocolātl, that appears to be a return import of the Spanish word made in the 18th century -- the Nahautl word for the chocolate drink was (and still is) cacahuatl. There have been many proposals for the actual source of the Spanish word (including a Mayan root and transmission from further south) but there's no consensus as to what the heck actually happened here.

I really enjoyed Adam Gidwitz's The Inquisitor's Tale a few years back and also I really enjoy espionage, so when [personal profile] osprey_archer alerted us that Adam Gidwitz had written a children's WWII espionage thriller called Max in the House of Spies, I immediately jumped on board for a buddy read, about which here is [personal profile] osprey_archer's post.

I knew from the inside cover that the plot of this book involved German Jewish refugee Max getting shipped off to the UK on the kindertransport and subsequently recruited for espionage, with an invisible dybbuk and an invisible kobold on his shoulder.

I did NOT know that it was also RPF ABOUT EWEN MONTAGU, MR. 'OPERATION MINCEMEAT' HIMSELF?!?!

The fact that the spy foster uncles whom Max meets in England are Ewen and Ivor Montagu, respectively Mr. Operation Mincemeat and The Communist Plot Device In Several Fictional Operation Mincemeat adaptations, altered the experience of the book significantly for me. I don't know that it made it better or worse per se but it immediately became much, much funnier.

To be clear Operation Mincemeat is not referenced at all in the text of the book, although Jean Leslie and Charles Cholmondeley make significant cameos (alas, no Hester Leggett, though we were eagerly awaiting her!). Ewen Montagu was chosen out of the many available interesting historical British intelligence officers this RPF project both because he's Jewish and he had a brother who was both Also an Interesting Guy and Also a Communist Spy. By putting Max between Ewen and Ivor, Gidwitz gets to explore the complex position of Jews in England, point out the moral ambiguities of Britain's role in the war, bring in some alternate political viewpoints, and also discuss the Inevitable Betrayals of Espionage in a way that remains appropriate for a middle grade novel. I think it's a very smart move and I appreciate it. It is just also, again, very very funny. I want the Ewen Montagu scion who wrote the politely scathing review of the Colin Firth film and its unnecessary romance plot to review this one for me please.

Now both [personal profile] osprey_archer and [personal profile] genarti, in reading this book at the same time I did, thought perhaps it was a bit implausible that British Intelligence would recruit a thirteen-year-old for active service duty. I did not have the same stumbling block. I have read Le Carre! And so has Adam Giswitz, because he talks about it at the end of the book. If you put yourself in Le Carre mindset, as indeed this book is very determined to be in the middle-grade version of the Le Carre mindset, it is only a small hop, skip and a jump to 'let's recruit a thirteen-year-old.' ("But," [personal profile] osprey_archer pointed out, "it's RPF and Ewen Montagu told us about everything he did and so we know he didn't recruit a thirteen-year-old." Small details.)

However, the thing that did throw me is the fact that the dybbuk and the kobold mostly seem to exist in this book to point out how absurd it is that British intelligence is attempting to recruit a thirteen-year-old. They Statler and Waldorf angrily around on Max's soldiers going 'this is ABSURD. why are they letting you do this! you are going to DIE!' I think it must be an intentional irony that the supernatural creatures are there as the voice of the reader/voice of reason, but I'm not sure it's an irony that ... works ...... I mean they're quite funny but if we are expected to believe these critters have been around since the dawn of time they surely have seen worse things in their thousands of years than a thirteen-year-old going to war.

Okay, aside from that, one other thing did throw me, which is the several times I had to stare at the page and hiss 'EXCUSE ME! THE OFFICIAL SECRETS ACT!'

With those two caveats I did have a great time, and I was both annoyed and excited to find out at the end of this book that it's part one of a duology and I have a whole second Max Espionage Adventure to experience.

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished! Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard, Rodney McKay, Stephen Caldwell, Elizabeth Weir, Laura Cadman, Radek Zelenka, Lindsay Novak - the usual Daedalus and Atlantis suspects.
Rating: Teen
Length: 100,449
Content Notes: Contains descriptions of serious injuries, animal attacks, extreme environmental conditions, violence, murder. No AO3 warnings apply.
Creator Links: Sholio on AO3, Sholio's old SGA website
Themes: Working together, Action/adventure, Competence, Hurt/comfort, Novel-length, Epic work, Genfic, Worldbuilding

Summary: When a scientific mission goes wrong, the Daedalus crashes on an ice planet along with Atlantis's top scientists and a ruthless saboteur. Will rescue come before injuries and the elements take their toll? Roughly season two era.

Reccer's Notes: This is a gripping, full-blown novel. The Daedalus crash-lands on a Gateless, uninhabited, icy planet while carrying a number of Atlantis personnel (Rodney, Radek, Elizabeth and Cadman), while back on Atlantis, realising something's gone badly wrong, John, Simpson, Carson, Lorne, et al try frantically to locate them, then to reach them by puddlejumper. It's a thriller about surviving both a disastrous crash and the freezing, inhospitable planet, plus searching for the saboteur or saboteurs who caused the crash. There's tons of detail about how the two groups separately work together to survive, and to find and reach the crashed ship, and then once the relief party arrives their troubles aren't over, with the saboteur still working against them and the logistics of only having puddlejumpers to perform a complex rescue. Sholio weaves it all together masterfully and it's an extremely good read with excellent worldbuilding, better than most pro thrillers. Highly recommended.

Is My Blue Your Blue?” – a site that gives you increasingly-mixed shades of teal, making you sort them as Blue or Green, then tells you where your mental boundary of “green turns into blue at This Point” compares to the population in general.

Mine is “hue 173,” moderately on the green side, i.e. the Exact Midpoint (“turquoise”) counts as a shade of blue to me. Did the test on a family call, where we picked whichever color most people agreed on…and managed to land on True Neutral.

Where’s yours?

The color “olo” can’t be found on a Pantone color chart. It can be experienced only in a cramped 9-by-13 room in Northern California. That small space, in a lab on the UC Berkeley campus, contains a large contraption of lenses and other hardware on a table. To see olo, you need to scootch up to the table, chomp down on a bite plate, and keep your head as steady as you can. A laser will be fired into one of your eyes, targeting more than a thousand of your cone cells. (The scientists will have mapped their location on your retina in advance.)”

What I wouldn’t give to get a look at this color. Doesn’t seem likely, though — apparently they’ve already gotten calls from a ton of interested artists, and the retinal mapping process is so involved, even the guy who named the color hasn’t gotten to see it yet.

(…Although the people who have seen it all describe it as some sort of teal. So maybe it’s not as unthinkable as it sounds like it should be.)

I had to get up at 5:45 AM in order to make an important phone call to Deal With A Thing.

I think I deserve a gold star for Getting Things Done.

(The Thing is not actually dealt with; I had to send in some documentation. Which means that at some point I'm going to have to get up at 5:45 AM again to make another phone call.)

You know, this kind of nonsense is not something I ever expected to encounter in life. Ah, well.

Since this was the last day it wasn't supposed to rain while I'm housesitting, I went to Fort Steuben. It's a small recreated fort in Steubenville OH. It was created to protect surveyors while they were mapping out the Northwest territory. It was nothing much new for me but I'm glad I finally went. I mean I've lived like 20 miles away growing up and never once came here.

What was cool is they recently added a surveyor's building (and named it in honor of a local surveyor and army man who passed) and the cool thing was since this DOES get a lot of field trip kids to it, they had info on becoming a surveyor in there for them. I mean when was the last time you've heard someone talking about that?

The elderly lady volunteer almost didn't want to sell me a ticket because it was SO. Fucking. Hot. She wasn't wrong. I was happy to see the fort was honest in its history (something Maga has been threatening museums over) and I learned Washington was worse than I imagined. The British army used 39 lashes of a cat of nine tails as their upper limit. Washington thought that wasn't good enough. Got the government to raise it to 100 lashes (which is nuts) and this wasn't enough for Washington either (as men were still willing to risk it) and petitioned for 500 lashes (the gov said now but jesus....)

I got very hot and went into the pool but since it was 94 degrees that did not help.

I was too hot to do much but went to a restaurant for their a/c (figuring it would be cooler) it's an irish bar created by Franco Carapellotti (which would explain the mural of Dean Martin in there....) I liked my nutty monkey (it was the day to over pay for drinks 10$ cocktail 9$ chocolate covered strawberry latte) but skrewball's peanut butter whiskey a) tastes like the middle of a recesse's peanut butter cup and b) overpowers everything. This had banana liquor maple syrup and bitters. I could taste none of that (I had tried that PB whiskey myself with chocolate liquor and nothing but PB then too)

Also I sweated the frakking Dexcom off my arm. No lie, just fell right off.

What I Just Finished Reading:

What I am Currently Reading:

What I Plan to Read Next:

Pantomine - an LGBT (intersexed main character) fantasy, I like it but i'm shelving it for a bit
