I saw The Hunger Games

dhampyresaI went to cinema to see it with a friend who was going in cold (he had only seen the trailer) while had read the trilogy.
We both liked it and the only question he had was about something was left deliberatly ambiguous, imho. So not having read the book(s) is not an obstacle to enjoying it.
I really liked that, unlike the books we weren't always in Katniss's head. This allowed for several scenes that didn't happen in the book, for example between Seneca Crane and President Snow or Haymitch and Seneca.
My favourite additional bits were the ones in the Game's control room, especially: "I want a tree." I found this line really hilarious, for some reason. Pretty much every scene in the Control Room had me going "those assholes >:(" which I think was the whole point.
Haymitch and Effie's interaction was pretty entertaining too (Haymitch: "(to Katniss) Nice dress. (to Effie) Not you.")
Cinna was great and almost everything looked more or less like what I imagined, and the parts that didn't were still appropriate to the descriptions of the books.
They were surprisingly shy about showing death/violence, but it was still pretty effective.
The bit where Cato kills the boy from District 3 had me going "run you fool!" at the boy and weirdly, sort of like Cato? I mean, he's a ruthless killer but he never pretended to be anything else. There's something honest about the fact that he killed the boy from 3 and tried to Peeta as soon as they weren't useful to him anymore. Compared to Katniss, who spent the whole movie/book pretending that she wasn't, except she kind of was.
Peeta's face is completely different when he smiles than when he doesn't, it's kind of funny.
They had to cut some scenes from the books (as well as add new ones) and on the whole, I like the choices they made. They kept all the important bits, the parts they added didn't feel forced and the ones that weren't included didn't need to be.
I lol'd when Foxface still didn't get a name, though.
TL;DR I enjoyed it, the adaptation was great and I'll probably go see the next one.
