What did you finish reading

Not much, sadly. My brainspace has been occupied by various things this week so I haven't been reading as much as I wanted to.

On the other hand, given that I scored bingo last week, I'm cutting myself some slack.

BINGO WOT I WON

Another thing that dug into my reading time was that on Saturday I decided that from now on I was going to comment on a fic a day, if I could manage it. That lasted about three days, because yesterday night my Internet decided to commit mutiny and refuse to do its job, so I couldn't do anything. I commented on two fics today to catch up. I expect to struggle somewhat with adding this to my routine for a while, but then get used to it.

Her Majesty's Guide To The Universe (4987 words) by fadeaccompli

Additional Tags: heroic bureaucracy, Worldbuilding
Summary: Jupiter steps out into the vast world of the advanced universe, and tries to figure out what to do with the portion of it that she owns. A great deal of paperwork is involved.

(This fic counts twice, because I commented on both chapters currently posted.)

Out (329 words) by moth2fic

Mister Vimes'd Go Spare! (4836 words) by Lunik
Chapters: 1/1

Let Us Live And Love (1458 words) by youjik33
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Night at the Museum (2006 2009)
Rating: Mature

Characters: Jedediah (Night at the Museum), Octavius (Night at the Museum), Larry Daley
Additional Tags: Angst, Fluff, First Time
Summary: Jed's hand touched his in the darkness. He'd taken his gloves off, and his skin was warm and calloused, and when Octavius twined their fingers together and squeezed, Jed squeezed back.

1001, by Sanya Anwar (art and scenario) (issues 1 & 2): (You can find them for free here.) This is a retelling of "One Thousand and One Arabian Nights" that so far hasn't gotten to the set-up of that tale and I have to say I'm greatly enjoying seeing what Scheherazade's life was like before all that went down. Although I love Scheherazade dearly, I think my favourite character is Dunyazade. SHE LIKES ALCHEMY! Truly a girl after my own heart. issue 3 is supposed to come out April 2015 and I'm excited for that.

Ant-Man #001 & #002, by Nick Spencer (scenario) and Ramon Rosanas (art): I've been terrible at following comics lately and so I'm trying to get back in the groove. I wish there was some sort of something that warned you when a new issue of a book you follow came out.

As for the comics themselves, I don't really have anything to say about them. I'm mostly reading for Cassie and so far there really hasn't been a lot of her (although she's kept the makeover Doom gave her, which what). I really hope Bank Lady who is totally a (former?) superhero shows up again, because she's awesome and I have to admit that Scott's solution to his housing problem is kind of hilarious.

What If: Age of Ultron #003, by Joe Keatinge (scenario) and Mico Suayan & Raffaele Ienco (art): A Marvel one-shot in an alternate univers. AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE IN WHICH NATASHA WIELDS MJOLNIR. I don't feel like I need a better reason than that to like this issue.

NATASHA WIELDING MJOLNIR
SHE IS THE STUFF OF LEGENDS

Hum, I think five issues of comics can be counted as one book? That's usually how many issues are in a tpb, right? In that case, I'm count this... "anthology" as "author who shares your initials" (close enough, anyway) on the Random Card.

This makes 0/25 on the Mix'n'Match Card (unchanged from last week), 16/25 on the Random Card (+1 from last week) and 2/25 on the Serious Card (unchanged from last week) for [personal profile] hamsterwoman's reading bingo.

What are you reading

Still stalled on The Art of War, The Kick-Ass Writer, La véritable histoire de Carthage et de Hannibal, Gustav Adolf Mossa: L'oeuvre symboliste: 1903-1918, Les Fleurs du Mal and Métronome.

A note, on Darshan: I saw on the author's social media presence that she's rewriting the books before the fourth one comes out. And that, my friends, is why I will finish (or not, as the case may be) the first two books as I own them already, but will not be buying any more. Once I buy a book, I expect that story to be done and not get rewritten/exist in several versions. That's just confusing as fuck.

Le Visage de l'Ombre, by Erik L'Homme: (Book 3 of Le Livre des Etoiles.) I'm so close to being done with this book. SO CLOSE! I have thoughts, but I'm waiting I've finished the whole thing to talk about them. That said, I would like to point out that there are Korrigans being helpful in this book. Also, Urien is STILL LOSING HIS SHIT over Valentin dying, alternating between murderous revenge and crying all over the place, so yeah, I'm pretty sure him and Valentin are "feudal lord and handmaiden manservant" rather than feudal lord and handmaiden manservant, if you know what I mean.

What are you reading next? (aka the to-read list)

Rome's Revolution was the original plan, but I think I'm going to reread Terry Pratchett's <i>Going Postal</i> first. Missed the Ides, anyway.

Old list:

Books that I have already: Pyramids of London, by Andrea K Höst, Prisoner (Echo's Wolf, Book 1) (Werewolf Marines 2) by Lia Silver, Darkness Over Cannae by Jenny Dolfen, Taking Stock by Scott Bartlett (yuleswap book 1), February by Lisa Moore (yuleswap book 2), The Demigod Diaries by Rick Riordan, Hostage by Sherwood Smith and Rachel Manija Brown.

Books that are out and that I haven't got: Clariel: The Lost Abhorsen, by Garth Nix, Ancillary Justice, by Ann Leckie, Melting Stones and Battle Magic by Tamora Pierce, The Lions of Al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay, The Beginning Place by Ursula Le Guin, Seraphina by Rachel Hartman, The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex, The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison, the last two books of Kate Eliott's Spiritwalker trilogy, The Missing Queen by Samhita Arni, Throne of the Crescent Moon by Saladin Ahmed and whatever's out of the Craft Sequence series.

Books that aren't out yet (and when they're out): The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan (Autumn 2015), The Sleeping Life (Eferum, #2) by Andrea K. Höst (2015), Benjamin January #14 by Barbara Hambly (no idea), Empire Ascendant by Kameron Hurley (Summer 2015? Still unsure if I'm even going to be reading this one), the Tris book by Tamora Pierce (2015), , The House of Shattered Wings by Aliette de Bodard, The Skull Throne, by Peter V. Brett, Dogs of Peace by Ada Palmer and whatever Jenny Dolfen's next project is (THAT ART!).

Books what I'm not sure if I want to read them: City of Blades, by Robert Jackson Bennett: Still IDK.

New additions to the list: The Grass-King's Concubine by Kari Sperring and Hostage by Sherwood Smith and Rachel Manija Brown are now owned by me as soon as I can get them to download to my ereader AND THERE WAS MUCH REJOYCING.

I am so glad to hear that Cassie is back. I am very behind with comics right now, and I hadn't registered this. Excellent news. Now, if Marvel 616 will only explain what's happened to Mockingbird....

She's been back since... *checks journal* December 10 2014, but Ant-Man only has two issues out so far, so you should be able to catch up easily, if you want to.

I am so happy that Cassie's back! Her death was the first time I felt genuinely betrayed by comics, because it was so fucking pointless. >:(

Oh! There was also something at the end of the most recent run of FF that implied she might have different superpowers now, so I'm also excited for that!

Commenting on a fic a day is a very worthy goal. Maybe I should set myself a weekly target.

I tried to comment on 3 Yuletide fics per day all through January, but I only got about halfway through.
