I was recently at an event and bought the book Au Cœur de l’Hiver from the author.

As she was wearing a jacket with various metal band patches (Epica and Nanowar of Steel were the ones I recognised), we started talking about music.

I recced her (song links added fro this post): In This Moment (song The In-Between[1]), Oceans of Slumber (song: A Return To The Earth Below) and The Pretty Reckless (song: Only Love Can Save Me Now).

[1] Someone should make a Dune fanvid to this song. It opens with "My mother said that I was holy" and the chorus is "Oh, I can feel a holy war / I can feel a holy war within / No, I can't take a holy war / No, I can't take a holy war again". And the rest of the lyrics also fit!

She signed my book and added a small rec list of metal bands: Wintersun (the main inspiration behind the book), Amaranthe, Zornheym, Beast in Black and Ad Infinitum.

I'm not just making this post to remind myself to check out their music, though! I also want to know what is the strangest and/or more unexpected way you've gotten recs for something? Did you check out the thing? How was it?

Also, should I wait until after I've read the book to check out the main inspi band? Or binge before? A secret third thing?

My personal favorite story of "how I got hooked on something in a weird way" is Final Fantasy VII--- I read synecdochic's "Lullabye for the New World Order" and got interested, and thought I was (hahahahah) going to be able to get away with just reading fic... then "just" watching Advent Children... then "just" playing Crisis Core... long story short, not only was I not, but I've played pretty much all the "main series" games up through XIII at this point. (Also the fact that I came out of that fic with the ship in my icon as my OTP in that fandom, when it's pretty much a clear NOTP in the fic itself never mind in canon, says... something, lol.)

Speaking of recs, I've been meaning to thank you for reccing Vespertine, because I got it and love it! In particular the whole "make friends with the scary summoned entity instead of treating it like a thing or a slave and everything works better" is... well, I've got drawerfic on that premise for both Devil Survivor 1 and 2, if that tells you how much I like the concept, lol.

What a story, hahaha. Do you have any fics for your OTP? I watched Advent Children some mumblemumble years ago.

Hah, yeah, "How I got into FFVII totally backwards", lol. I think if you click on the relevant tags in my journal I have some fic posted there.

Totally loved Vespertine though alas I can't think of any other recs for the "make friends with the scary monster and it works better"--- there's not enough of it in my life, either, lol.
