The Ascension of Skywalker

This entry was very nearly titled "The Climb of Skywalker", because the French title is "L'Ascension de Skywalker" -- but then I remembered how much our group laughed at going to see "L'ASCE" which is where our tickets cut off the title. Very mature and grown-up, us.
Saw the movie in 2D, VOSTFR.
Short version: It had many flaws, some due to the structure of the Sequel Trilogy, but I did enjoy it, mostly. It was kind of a mess but the cinematography was very pretty.
If anyone needs me, I'll be over there shipping Rey/Zorii based on their two sentence conversation. I will take what femslash shipping fodder I can get, ok.
The Rey/Finn/Poe is strong with this movie :D The hug at the end is very "FINN HAS TWO HANDS" lol
The movie had great Finn/Poe shipping fodder, overall. Even if they introduced two new female characters to stand in as love interests, sort of. They never make them actual love interests and Poe's shoots him down twice so idk that I'd call this "no homo" but also idk that I'd call it not no homo.
Rey kisses Kylo, which sure is a thing that happened, huh? That whole ship got made canon/reciprocated even earlier, so good for everyone who ships that. (My friend S was delighted.)
Rey Palpatine was A Choice. Palpatine in general was A Choice. Mind you, I am always happy for more Palpatine because the man is always Living His Best (Un)Life and tbh he is a joy to watch. I can't hate a character clearly having SO MUCH FUN.
Palpatine's return had even less set up than My Chemical Romance's.
To be honest, a lot of foreshadowing went nowhere and a lot of things that should have been foreshadowed were not. Did Disney not do any overall planning for the whole trilogy? Because I'd believe that.
I wanted Rey to be Rey Nobody, but I was pretty sure I wasn't gonna get that. If she had to be related to someone, I'm glad it was Palpatine. It at least made the message "blood is no destiny", if we couldn't have "anyone can be a hero".
(I'm gonna headcanon her dad was a Palpatine clone*, because I am not here for Palpatine Who Fucks.)
(* Since my friends asked why Palpatine was after Rey and not his clone, my answer was: You know how Dolly was basically born old because of telomeres? That.)
Also once Palpatine's full costume was revealed in the light, it turned out I had kinda closet cosplayed him so lol.
Anakin Skywalker had done exactly one thing right in his life but now not even that, lololololol. I love the stupid murder noodle.
I have no idea who any of the voices talking to Rey were! Except Yoda. Not because I recognised the voice (me? recognise a voice? hahaha) but because Yoda syntax he used.
I still do not care about Kylo Ren but at least he was tolerable in this one. I chuckled a few times when I clearly shouldn't have though. Most notably when he was trying to be Dark and Broody.
All the Skywalkers-by-blood have returned to the Force, which is interesting.
Hux is MAGNIFICENT levels of petty.
Rose was shortchanged to a ludicrous and frankly offensive extent. This is one of several things that felt like deliberate fuckyous to Last Jedi, but given how much backlash Tran got for being the first Asian Actress in a major SW role this was a shitty decision.
Finn looked AMAZING. Like damn. He's always handsome, but he was even more handsome here and his skin is flawless. I do wish that he had more to do though. Him meeting other deserting Stormtroopers was cool but never really goes anywhere. Ditto him being Force sensitive.
Two moments made me tear up: one from sadness, one from joy. Sadness: when Chewie learns Leia died ;_; Joy: the reinforcements! "That's not a fleet! That's... just people!"
Rey's ending <3<3<3<3<3 Friends! A family!Dead parents!
Luke and Leia are married on the astral plane now lololololol
Evil!Rey was hot. Even (especially?) with the teeth. She was also clearly taught by Darth Maul.
New robot is cute.
Lando is just there but idc I love him.
I have honestly no idea if Palpatine's audience was physically there, there in a Force ghost way or a metaphor or what
Jannah's really cute!
Rey 's healing of the serpent monster gave me Martha & the Tarasque vibes, not sure why.
The power creep is real.
They did the best they could with what Leia footage they had but her absence was still a gaping hole in the movie. She gets a lightsabre though, so I guess there's that.
All the CGI'd people looked weird.
Speaking of lightsabres! THE BLUE LIGHTSABRE LIVES AGAIN :D I am very very invested in the blue lightsabre.
The last scene was lovely if kinda 'welp i can already that's gonna be a plot point in the sequel sequel trilogy'. Rey's new lightsaber is HELLA DOPE. Wish we'd seen her wield it.
Rey crossing the lightsabres looked weird. The lightsabres switcheroos were neat, though.
I wonder what this trilogy feels like wtached as whole.
Kinda made me what to write fic? Not sure what about, but I have a vague urge to noodle at things.
There is one shot of two minor, unnamed female characters kissing at the end. THE GFFA HAS QUEER PEOPLE. Good job, Disney, you did the absolute bare minimum.
The movie is very loud, very bright and the theater we were in was HELLA cold -- seriously, I shivered throughout the whole thing, even with my wintercoat on -- and now I have a headache :( To bed with me!

I haven't even seen it yet but have been spoiled to hell and back and am enjoying all the reactions. "Living His Best (Un)Life"!

Date: 2019-12-23 11:57 pm (UTC)That was my favourite line, ngl. I love the man and his best (un)life but California 2019 has been a thing since Danger Days/before TFA came out. (Suddenly I want the Killjoys to be on Jakku -- they've already got one orphan girl, they can pick up another.)

Date: 2019-12-23 05:51 am (UTC)Also super pressed about Rose and Finn not getting big story arcs. Like they almost went there with Force sensitive Finn! They almost went there with Finn inspires Trooper Mutiny! But nope.

Date: 2019-12-24 12:31 am (UTC)My thoughts on Kylo Ren before this movie where that I gave negative fucks about him and now I merely give zero fucks, lol.

Date: 2019-12-23 12:21 pm (UTC)Such a pity they didn't seem to know what to do with Rose & Finn.
Dark and Broody Ren is pretty funny, tbh. My theory is that Rey kissed him because he was dying and she knew he had been yearning over her. Pity kiss, kind of thing.

Date: 2019-12-24 01:05 am (UTC)RIGHT?! Palpatine is Enjoying Life Goals, tbh.
But ROSE WAS MY FAVOURITE NEW TLJ CHARACTER she's great! She's an engineer! Much like Finn her trauma gets not mention in this movie :( Come on! You have all these characters with great backstory, do something with them!
Him brooding on the wreck with the sea around him with that ridiculous hole in his shirt made me chuckle way too loud for how solemn that was clearly meant to be, lol
Pity kiss works for me!
