Long story short: from what I remember of the legends I grew up with, there's something profoundly inhuman about Merlin in the "this dude is literally not entirely human" sense, which comes out as him having totally fucked ideas about morality.
Easy casting of bad guys makes me angry, ngl, but it is true that it's often very interesting.
