I live in a pretty touristy city so you'd think I'd be used by now to the fact that Americans don't think of people from other countries as people, just props.
You are being unfair! As our Congress demonstrated on live television yesterday, many Americans also think many people from their own country are props, not people, as long as they are not the right sort of people.
Is this about that dreadful sounding novel that was going to use the Kosovo war as a backdrop to its (American) character's epic love story? Because yeah, that was an appalling thing to witness unfold — although, as you say, hardly the only example of this kind of thing.
