dhampyresa: Paris coat of arms: Gules, on waves of the sea in base a ship in full sail Argent, a chief Azure semé-de-lys Or (fluctuat nec mergitur)
I'm currently reading the French translation o Agustina Bazterrica's Cadáver exquisito (French title: Cadavre Exquis[1]; English title: Tender is the Flesh). I have thoughts but I'm only ~2/3 of the way through and I'm waiting to see how things go. Also, not the point of this post.

At one point the reader is introduced to a guy who is very creepy. The narrative is very insistent that you find this guy creepy. So many things are used to signal that this guy is creepy, it was honestly getting hilarious even before I got to my breaking point:

The walls of the office are lined with floor-to-ceiling shelves filled with old books. Most of the titles are in Romanian, and though he’s at a distance he can make out a few: Necronomicon, The Book of Saint Cyprian, Enchiridion of Pope Leo, The Grand Grimoire, Book of the Dead.

The Book of the Dead? The Book of the Dead?!

First of all, which one, because I know two off the top of my head (Egyptian, Tibetan) and I bet there's more.

Second. In. In waht way is the Egyptian Book of the Dead creepy? I've read it! Recently! Multiple times! In two different languages! [2] There's nothing creepy about it! It's boring at the worst.

I'm just. The Book of the Dead? Creepy? Ok. Sounds fake, but ok.

[1] Hilariously, not one week before I had finished reading a very different book of the same French title.

[2] One day that MCU Black Panther fic will see the light of day. Hopefully before BP2 comes out lol
