That Légion d'honneur list site is fascinating! No Légion d'honneur ancestors with the same last name for me, alas but also unsurprisingly since they're mostly British and American; other family names are likewise mostly from Britain but also include such common names as Martin, so heaven only knows. But looking up oneself is only a brief diversion, and I bet just clicking on a random name and reading their dossier would lead to plenty of interesting results.
That fact about l'Académie Française may be the best fact I've learned all week. AMAZING.
Also, now I want to reread Lucifer.
(Also: hello! I realized that just friended you and I never spoke up to say who I was. I found you via skygiants, as you may have guessed. More specifically, she linked me to your post on D'un monde à l'autre, because I've been studying French a few years now; I've been wanting to try more reading in French that's not from Project Gutenberg or the famous literature assigned in class, and not been sure where to start without the ability to ask friends for recs like I do in English. Both the La Quête d'Ewilan trilogy and Le Déchronologue sound great.)
