why is there always one

I'm currently spending regular amounts of time browsing articles about nutrition. Why the fuck is there always at least one person going on and on about how nobody needs to control what they eat and everyone should just ~listen to their body~ because ~the body is wise~ and ~knows what it needs~ and how if we just ate what our bodies told us to eat we'd be perfectly healthy and blablablablabla.

Yeah, no. Fuck you. Here's a incomplete list of things I ate when I was a kid, up to the age of about 9, when I finally gained enough control over my impulse to not:
  • My own hair
  • Hair from my favourite plush toy
  • Dirt
  • Small rocks
  • Paper
  • Bits of eraser I'd cut from my eraser with a ruler during class

SUCH HEALTH VERY WISE WOW

The irony is: I'm looking at nutrition stuff and recipes and things because (1) I'm curious to see if I can spend less on food, (2) I want to eat more protein to get bigger muscles and, most importantly, (3) I would like to not be anemic again.

Ok, I'm going to go eat some loose sheets of paper, apparently that's how one stops having a mineral deficiency.

Maybe if you drew on the paper first? Graphite is probably good for you, right?

They always say 'listen to your body' - well, the problem with that is maybe it worked for our ancient ancestors who weren't surrounded by food available every minute of every day but we are... and even then studies of our nearest biological relatives suggests they eat til they're full when food is available to cover them for the times that it's not. They don't think 'well really, one banana will do.'

Rambling I know, but FFS!

It's honestly frustrating the amount of "listen to your body" advice there is out there, as if that's anything helpful. I get the sentiment that if you're in pain you shouldn't ignore it because that's your body telling you that something is up, that's one thing, however when it comes to food and nutrition that is an entirely separate thing altogether and it's not that simple. Our bodies are complex things and you will never know what it needs, it's always a guessing game. Doing the generic, "listen to your body" without any additional information is just surface level bullshit. It's right up there with the "eat, pray, love" nonsense. It means nothing.

This 100% but also when they say 'just eat lots of vegetables!' or every recipe has either raw vegetables or big chunks of them. I was a kid the last time I willingly ate vegetables because I was a curious eater. I've gotten to where I can eat some a VERY certain way but not like the recipes ask for.
