Months I actually posted fic:
February, March, April, May, September, October, November, December
Overall Thoughts:
Well, you can clearly see where I just... kind of broke down there in the middle.
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Less than I expected when the year started, but more than I thought I had, given my slump in the middle.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
Shannara Chronicles. I enjoyed the first season, but it didn't really grip me fannishly. The second season got more fannish investment from me, although I'm not sure I'll write more in the fandom, given that it's based on a series of books and I already have too much to read and to little time.
This year's theme and the story that demonstrates it most:
Fuck, mate, idk. The closest thing to a theme is probably "damn, dhampyresa really likes Star Wars" so either Every Heart That Beats For Liberty or Between the Devil and the Dust. If we assume that "sacrifice to forces greater than one's self" is also a theme, then it's still these two.
What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
Honestly? Despite everyone dying at the end, Every Heart That Beats For Liberty. I just really enjoy it. It's the Paris Commune in the Star Wars universe! Also Jyn and Kaytoo being friends is THE BEST.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
If I'm allowed to count it, given that it's not finished yet, the Fake Dating FOR GREAT JUSTICE fic. There's something about writing a fic at the rate of a couple sentences every day or so (for an average of ~2k/month) over more than a year that's taught me a lot about pacing.
Otherwise, Pocketful of stories for trying to show how stories change and evolve. Not sure I managed.
My best stories this year:
Every Heart That Beats For Liberty and Between the Devil and the Dust. I just really like them.
Most popular story:
Far and away, Between the Devil and the Dust. Deservedly so, I think.
Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
her blessing on my brow. Why aren't more people reading gen alternate history about the Punic Wars?! Truly, a mystery.
My least favourite story this year:
A Big Deal in the Rebellion -- I don't think I managed Leia's voice right.
Most fun story to write:
I quite enjoyed writing both In thunder, lightning, or in rain and Between the Devil and the Dust.
Story with single sweetest moment:
Maybe Dorothy with Sylvie in Most Merciful and Stern? I didn't really write much sweet this year.
Hardest story to write:
A Big Deal in the Rebellion and for the same reason as above: I don't think I managed Leia's voice right.
Easiest story to write:
I wrote the last two scenes of Every Heart That Beats For Liberty in some breathless fugue state, so that one.
Truest story of the year:
I'm not sure what this means.
Story that made you cry/saddest story:
Literally everybody dies at the end of Every Heart That Beats For Liberty (in pretty much the same way they dies in Rogue One canon, even), so it could be considered the saddest, but it doesn't make me sad. it makes me happy/hopeful. Sleeping Beauty and the Black Mercy is the one that makes me saddest, I think, because of Finn's nightmare.
Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
Yeah, straight up Finn's nightmare in Sleeping Beauty and the Black Mercy. i'm not sure how well it landed, but the implication was that he was responsible for the death of his own children.
Most overdue:
None of them, really. I barely posted anything outside of exchanges, this year. (Unposted, most overdue story: Rogue One in the style of a Norse saga, à la The Tale of Lightsabre the Blue.)
Most eye roll-worthy title:
A Big Deal in the Rebellion.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
Between the Devil and the Dust. Well. The Force. But given that it's a Star Wars fic and especially given what it's about, yeah, I'm calling the Force a character in this case. I mean, it's literally a fic all about the Force (in which Rey, Luke and Anakin are each other's spirit guides).
Biggest disappointment:
Pocketful of stories was so much better in my head.
Biggest surprise:
I have no idea, truthfully.
Most telling story:
Every Heart That Beats For Liberty, probably. It be hard to find anything more me than "Jyn Erso, the cast of Rogue One and the City of Jedha do the Paris Commune".
Favorite opening line:
Gwen rode the lightning to the Isle of Agamotto. (In thunder, lightning, or in rain)
Favorite closing line:
Dorothy touched the gun in the small of her back, gauntlets clicking against the safety, and the Witch of the East prepared to meet with the Witch of the North. (Most Merciful and Stern)
Favorite line(s) from anywhere:
"Does the desert care about the grain of sand? Does the ocean care about the wave? Does the night sky care about the star? No. Why then should the Force care for any individual life?" Rey spoke, and the words tumbled out of her mouth without her knowing where they came from. "Some are brighter or best beloved or chosen, but in the end the storm comes, the dawn rises and the wave must break." (Between the Devil and the Dust)
Favorite title:
In roughly equal measures: Sleeping Beauty and the Black Mercy, Between the Devil and the Dust and Every Heart That Beats For Liberty.
Story that could have been better?
Most of them, honestly.
What story do you want to have written?
I wanted to post the Rogue one in the style of a Norse saga fic before The Last Jedi came out.
Story I want remembered:
Between the Devil and the Dust and Every Heart That Beats For Liberty.
Stories I haven't yet written, but intend to:
I've nothing specific in mind I haven't already started.
In conclusion:
This was certainly a year. Not a great output overall, but I'm really proud of some of it.
Fic-writing goals for 2018:
I hope to finish the Norse Rogue One fic, the Maul-trains-Rey fic and the Fake Dating FOR GREAT JUSTICE fic. I also hoep to post more outside of exchanges.
I'd like to thank the academy ...
Everyone who has ever listened to me ramble (dear L and the fannish folks especially).
