Maybe the artist drew one thing and Editorial changed its mind and rewrote the story at the last minute so they didn't match, like in the old days of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

(After reading the behind-the-scenes history of Marvel, I have no idea why Jack Kirby didn't wait for Stan Lee in a dark alley with a pipe wrench.)
