I'm afraid I can't comment on the acting either way. I'm slightly faceblind and so have some trouble reading expressions, especially at a remove. I'm sorry that impacted your enjoyment of the movie, though.

I thought the awkwardness of "I like dogs" was intentional, as a way of showing us that Jupiter isn't used to flirting. It also explains her family's reaction at the end: they're surprised -- but happy -- that she's dating.
