It's also a masterful avoidance of a trial trap. If she'd said "yes", she'd been guilty of hubristic heresy, if she'd said "no", she'd have admmitted to being a lost soul. No wonder this was one of the original trial bits which Shaw used in Saint Joan without changing the phrasing - it can't be improved on!
