Vidding for an absolute beginner

For Reasons Not Worth Explaining At This Juncture, I would like to be able to vid. Except I have no idea how to start :(

Can anyone help?

Are you using Windows, Mac OS X, or Linus?

I am out of date, but I have friends. =) I can probably connect you to people who have info if you don't get inundated by info straightaway.

Also--would a high-level overview be at all useful, or is what you're looking for more of the technical nitty-gritty? I am out of date on software for the latter, but I can talk you through some of the basics of the former (as a stopgap until a real expert stops by).

These will tend to be dated, especially with regard to technical stuff and hangouts, but the basics are still useful:

sisabet made some of my favorite Buffyverse vids. I don't know if she's still active--I haven't been following the vidder world in the past few years--but she has a lot of interesting things to say.

Also worth perusing are past [livejournal.com profile] vividcon posts; they might have some meta there.

Argh, have to run, but basically, if you can chase down the LJs/DWs/Tumblrs/??? of the vidders who made your favorite vids, look for vid meta or making-of posts--those can be very illuminating.
