Some time last night I made the apparently colossal mistake of trying to boot my computer in safe mode. Reader, that did not work out.

I was unable to even access my password screen. After hours of fruitless frantic rebooting and phone-searching for a solution (it's no use telling me how to solve the issue from the troubleshoot menu if I can't access the troubleshoot menu) I gave up and went to bed past my bedtime. Then I woke up before my alarm (bleh) spent some more time fruitlessly trying to fix it to no avail. Then I took a shower and ate breakfast and when I tried again I could suddenly access the troubleshoot menu! So I fixed my computer, copied some important files I hadn't backed up yet and checked if it booted properly now. It did.

I don't even know. But hey! I have my computer back!

Exchange news: Self, you need to stop claiming pinch-hits and being an idiot. You're not even in that exchange! WHY

Other Exchange news: Night on Fic Mountain progressing as it should. Worldbuilding exchange fast approaching (eep!).

And now I'm going to go read about the time when the Seine rose 8m62 (23'3") and Paris flooded. AND THEN IT FROZE OVER. Good times.

.It's that time of the year again! As readers of this journal may know, I mod several fanwork exchanges. The biggest of those, [community profile] nightonficmountain , just opened nominations. There may be venting (most likely under-lock) because let me tell you, I have not missed the ao3 nomination approval interface and especially not its tendency to throw 404s at me when I've just validated a bunch of noms, aaaaaaaargh. /the glamorous life of a fandom mod

I've seen a bunch of movies lately I haven't talked about on here -- and should -- Arrival (Hollywood scifi), Patients (French slice-of-life/biography) and Hidden Figures/Les Figures de l'ombre (US Historical) all of which were good.

I also saw Logan. Look. I have been for X-23 on the big screen for literally over a decade. I cannot overstate this: the very first time X-23 appeared, in a season 3 episode of X-Men:Evolution, I was sitting in front of my TV going "SHE IS THE GREATEST AND HER FEET CLAWS ARE THE COOLEST". Based on that, you'd think I would have had high expectations for this movie, but the thing is, I didn't, mostly because I didn't believe it was actually real. Like. There's an X-23 movie????? Is this the real life? But I have to say this was an awesome X-23 movie. Also SHE IS THE GREATEST AND HER FEET CLAWS ARE THE COOLEST.

dhampyresa: (MY BIRTHDAY HAS SQUID)
My dream last night consisted entirely of me finding out the last book of a series I've been following was out, acquiring said book from my comicshop and then reading said comic book for the rest of the dream (90+%). It was a damn good comic book, I have to say, and I enjoyed it greatly. It did have some issues though, and I'm glad to say the actual series is still going in real life (the dream!last book's number actually came out several years/books ago).

It's not even the first time I've had a dream consisting almost entirely of me reading a comicbook. They're good comics, every time, so I can't complain, really.
dhampyresa: (SCIENCE SMASH)
I'm tired of having to defend enjoying the things I enjoy. As I just told my dad when he disparaged my desire to see Logan, "Look, I have been waiting for this movie* for over a decade. You will not take this from me." And he didn't.

*X-23 IS GOING TO BE IN A MOVIE OMG OMG OMG (been waiting for this since she first showed up in X-Men:Evolution -- OMG SHE'S GOING TO BE IN A MOVIE)

You know what? I'm also going to consider this one canon.

Speaking of Star Wars! I still haven't seen Rogue One.

Tbh, right now, between wanting to avoid spoilers and also wanting to WRITE ALL THE YULETIDE*, I'm staying away from the internet for the next while.

* I claimed a pinch-hit and also I have like five fics I want to finish and post so it is A LOT of yuletide.
dhampyresa: (A most terrible case of the Star Wars)
Tomorrow evening I'm might try to see Rogue One at the late night double feature picture show.

Then I'm going to wake up before dawn to go out of town for the week-end to visit family. See y'all on Monday.

Comics!

Dec. 5th, 2016 09:59 pm
dhampyresa: (Quit killing people)
This evening I patronised my local comic book store. It's been ages since I went and I want to buy ALL OF THE THINGS. I have (so far) restricted myself to one comic for me and one as a gift for someone else. (I'm going to go back and buy more stuff for me -- as long as I'm also buying people gifts, it's not being selfish.)

I did however get my headcold germs aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall over the shop. Sorry to anyone who catches it.

Okay, usually I don't buy books in translation when I can avoid it, but HOLY SHIT the intégrales of Locke & Key are ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS. Seriously. This is literally the first time I've wanted to own books not because of the content but because the physical objects themselves are so beautiful.

dhampyresa: (Default)
Between yuletide canon review and the continued weirdo headache I've been having for a week*, I can't say I've been doing much reading I can talk about.

I'm really hoping the headaches go away and I can do creative stuff that's actually creative again.

* I'm pretty sure I know what's causing it. It's not what you think. It's the supermoon!!!

dhampyresa: (Default)
1. I have actual words written on the fic for an ongoing canon I was being silly about earlier. I'm going to write it -- and post it as AU if I have to.

2. Edge of Tomorrow is surprisingly good and give surprisingly good Paris. Currently the Louvre is being destroyed in slowmo.

3. I've fallen behind on my currently airing shows. Boo.

4. I was making good progress on answering ao3 comments -- only 69 left! -- but now the next one up is the one that stopped me answering ao3 comments for a long time there and uuuuuuuuuuuuurgh idk how to tackle it? It's not a mean comment or anything, I just don't know what to say to it.

5. Sometimes I forget how much fun writing or drawing can be.
dhampyresa: (Default)
...And yet.

I mean, I opened this tab to post something, didn't I? But nope.

Anyway.

Give me prompts?

Or tell me that it's okay for me to write for an ongoing canon. Lots of people do it! Why am I stuck on but "what if my fic is rendered obsolete before I post it?!" -- then just mark it as AU, self, ffs. Not that it's much of a concern given how much canon focuses on these two, even though one of them's nominally a main character (I say bitterly, with a bitter expression). But still. I'm stuck on that, like the silly person that I am.

I'm having a friend over from abroad for the next couple of days. (I already gave the "native Parisian tourguide" routine, so I'll have to find something else.)

So if I'm not around, that would be why.

1. I am too cold and my computer is too hot. I don't understand why I'm so cold.

2. My writing program ate the entire contents of one of my WIP files. IT'S FINE IT'S NOT LIKE I WAS WRITING THAT >:[ Thankfully I am obsessive about backing up my writing (literally every time I shut off my computer, so several times a day) and so was able to recover it. Idk what that was all about.

3. What the fuck am I going to do with this moo box seriously. Why did you give me this, random person. ._. At least I also made off with a detailed breakdown of Drama At The French Lightsaber Leagues.
dhampyresa: (This is my life)
So today wasn't a great day and I basically did fuckall except listen to the 10th anniversary album of My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade, The Black Parade/Living With Ghosts, on repeat. And then it was basically just "Welcome to the Black Parade" on repeat.

Listen, I hear those opening notes and suddenly I'm back in time -- not that ten years ago was necessarily a good time for me to be, but it was ten years ago and I'm still here, so that's something.

You know, I could have sworn at one point I had all the best intentions of not signing up for anymore exchanges until yuletide AND YET. (Speaking of which: Secret Wars made it in! Fannish landmark: evidence post accepted!)

I signed up for [community profile] trickortreatex (and only just today remembered to post on the letter post). I need to do canon review, but I'm excited to start on my assignment.

I'm waffling on signing up for [community profile] artfeverfest  because, as always, I have jitters about IS MY ART GOOD ENOUGH FOR A GIFT. Idk, mates. Idk.

I saw the fandom folks on Saturday. It was lovely, as always. They helped me with the resolution of a Star Wars fic I'm working on (ie: "it's Star Wars, A Wizard Did It is fine") -- and I got to explain about how the Fake Dating FOR GREAT JUSTICE fic is in fact Fake Dating for the recognition of the legal personhood of clones FOR GREAT JUSTICE and not hyperbole (aka that time I accidentally talked myself into shipping a thing and now there's a subplot about smuggling a political prisoner to safety). I learned a bunch of stuff about Dragon Age (a surprising amount of people are Secretly Elven Gods, I have to say). We did a fair amount of talking about Voltron -- accidentally gave myself a headcanon /fails. There was even bonding over Yuletide Wanks Of Yesteryear at one point, lmao. I missed these people so much.

TV-wise, Lucifer is back! I know, I was suprised too, because it's been what, six months since last season? Anyway, enjoyed S2 premiere a lot. Star Wars Rebels is also back, right after I marathoned S1 and S2 to be ready on time. I want to watch Nirvana on Fire, because several people have said it's good, but at the same time I want to watch a k-drama and/or something involving time-travel. What's everyone watching?

I have a solo three weeks trip starting tomorrow, then a shorter trip with family starting almost right after. I'll probably won't be back on the internet before September, as a consequence.

Don't set anything on fire while I'm gone.
dhampyresa: (This is my life)
I did my bit, everything else is out of my hands. AND NOW I CAN DO SOMETHING ELSE -- if at all possible, I am not spending (almost) every waking moment focused on a thing because then I end up dreaming of the thing at night too and NOPE.

Anyway, I have some stuff left to do before I leave for Great Britain. Like, idk, making sure I have somewhere to sleep that isn't the underside of a bridge or that I have some way to return that isn't "swim across the Channel!".

On the fandom-y side of things, I need to change the rules for History Exchange -- to my shame there is a grievous oversight there and I need to fix it and check if I need to change the rules for NoFM too -- and reveal the collection once that's done. I also have a fic I'd like to finish before I leave, which will probably be finished -- hell, maybe even two if I ever figure out how to finish that one fic about the ghost of Anakin Skywalker on Starkiller base.

Speaking of Star Wars! And Great Britain! And various other Earth-bound locations! I have decided I'll refer to places I travel to by the names of Star Wars planets, because why not. So I live in Coruscant, travel regularly to Ahch-To to Tatooine and spend several months on each of Alderaan and Pantora.

Point being. In that frame of reference, what do I call Great Britain? Or even places within Great Britain? Or any other location? (This can be very specific or vague -- I mean, Coruscant, Ahch-To and Tatooine are all in the same country.)

dhampyresa: (A most terrible case of the Star Wars)
Watching the July 14 Paris fireworks on TV, I wonder if the Jedi have anything like that -- more accurately, I wonder if they have anything like the 'bal des pompiers' (firefighters' ball).

Probably not, I decide. But the clones most likely do.

Edit: I mentionned it over at [community profile] history_exchange because it'll delay reveals, but I'm out of town this week-end until Monday evening.
