This was my assignment. It was a pain to write. My recipient, Mithrigil, gave a single prompt for this pairing and it was a smut prompt. Now, I can't fucking write smut, so I had to try and figure out how to write something they might like. Which, when all you have is a smut prompt to go on is not easy. Hopefully I succeeded.

This fic is also part of the reason I've been pretty silent on reading Warhorses by Yusef Komunyakaa lately. The title comes from 'Here, the old masters of Shock and Awe' from said poem anthology and I figured that there probably weren't many people currently reading said book in fandom and what if someone guessed it was me writing the fic WHAT THEN

(Fellow veterans of Hetalia fandom might remember Mithrigil as one third of mithpuelinden. In case you wanted that blast from the past.)

Summary: Palpatine died in a ship crash. Sixty years later, Rey had to put the War on hold and go rescue her master.
One of the things I wanted to do with this exchange was to treat at least one of: femslash, hero/villain and crosstime ship. At one point I decided to see if there were any requested relationships that fit all three and there was! So I wrote Rey/Asajj Ventress femslash.

I'd originally come up with the idea of Palpatine dying in the crash early in Revenge of the Sith causing Grievous to be in charge of the Separatists and that causing the war to last for decades in order to write Rey/Rex and/or any clone/TFA person pairings, but there weren't any. Rex still gets to be around because I say so, that's why. This is a fun verse and I may end up writing more in it. (In case you're curious: yes, the clones still have the chip for Order 66 implanted.)

Making Rey Anakin's padawan was a given and I loved getting the opportunity to write her as a more traditional kind of Jedi, if not a totally traditional one. My favourite passage I wrote for this exchange in fact relates to Rey, the Jedi and meditation: To Rey, the edge of meditation always felt like being back on Jakku, standing at the top of a dune, nothing to see but endless sand and the unforgiving horizon. It wasn't the vastness of the space between stars that reminded her of her place in the universe -- it was a favoured metaphor of some Jedi, that every Jedi was a star and the Force the galaxy -- it was the desert, immortal and infinite. Every Jedi a grain of sand, the Force the desert.

Star Wars Rebels
: S03E07: Eh. Teenagers, more teenagers, not enough Sabine and Sato and his nephew don't look related to me (but then I'm bad at faces). Thrawn and Sato's ~worthy adversary~ brief dialogue made me ship it.

Lucifer: S02E09: DR LINDA! Standing up to primordial forces of the universe for her patients <3. Chloe helping Lucifer kill Lux. Maze deliberately embarassing Amenadiel, aw. This show continues to be great fun.

The Librarians: S03E01: IT'S BACK! :D I was worried for a moment that they were going to make Seth the bad guy -- there was a close-up on a dog-headed god carving and I was ready to rant especially since it was Anubis -- but it was Apep, so all is forgiven! (Seth gets a bad rep.) I shoudl have trusted the show more -- after all, it's the show that named Lancelot as the son of Ban. Anyway, Antikythera mechanism!!! I loved Cassandra this episode and Eve and Jenkins and Ezekiel and the Stumpy shoutout, but Jake had my favourite line with "'Pure Evil'? As opposed to 'fake evil'?".

Legends of Tomorrow: S02E06: It's my favourite Western genre: timetravelling western! (Look, there's Back to the Future III, this episode and one other from this show at least, that's three examples, that makes it a genre.) I ended up shipping Sarah/Jonah, ngl -- if nobody writes that fic and calls it "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy", I will be very disappointed with fandom.

Class: S01E06: This was a really lovely bottle episode and in real time on top of that! Creepy concepr, really well executed. OH HEY SO I'M FINALLY CAUGHT UP ON THE SHOWS I'M WATCHING

CURRENTLY AIRING SHOWS

Star Wars Rebels
: S03E06:

FINALLY A SABINE AND MANDALORE EPISODE I AM HERE FOR THIS

I appreciated getting the glimpses we got into Fenn Rau's captivity: play space!chess with Sabine and hahaha Kanan's "More like a cranky guest". I feel bad for Fenn Rau. He wanted to do what was right for his people.

Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo as Mandalorians!

So Sabine's mom is maybe working for the Empire?! WHAT

SABINE GOT A JETPACK! :D She's been wanting one for ages.

I'm hoping this episode means we'll get more Sabine content for the rest of the season.

Lucifer: S02E06, S02E07 and S02E08: Trixie accepting Maze's real face is my favourite scene, but it's very very closely followed by Maze and Dr Linda. "He's not dead, but trust me, he's going" places quite honourably -- I needed that, thank you, show.

CANNOT BELIEVE LUCIFER BROKE DR LINDA but thankfully she got over it.

I'm really enjoying Ella. Chloe and Maze roomates hijinks are amazing. Mum is up to no good, but frankly what I want most right now is for Azrael to show up about her knife.

Legends of Tomorrow: S02E03, S02E04 and S02E05: YES FINALLY WE ARE DONE WITH THE NAZIS

This show remains ridiculous, yet entertaining. I quite like Amara, but I'm meh on Nate, as far as new additions go. Still don't really care about Ray, either and the whole ~am I a hero without my suit~ thing isn't helping.

REALLY enjoying Sara as captain, though. I also continue to enjoy Jax and Stein -- especially totally rational fear of zombies. Poor dude.

Class: S01E03, S01E04 and S01E05: April continues to be my favourite -- I have A Thing for characters who tell the world "you will not break me and you will not take my kindness from me" -- but poor Tanya! I feel so bad for her! And the intro with her dad was really well done. Matteusz's "I don't like guns" is probably the hardest I've laughed at this show. Idk, something about the delivery really got to me.

NOT CURRENTLY AIRING

Luke Cage: S1E08: I feel like I should be more invested in this. It's entertaining, but I don't care about Diamondback and him being Luke's secret brother (?) so it makes the show lackluster for me. Less of that, more of Misty, Claire and Shades, please.

Nirvana in Fire: E06: Have made no progress.

Miraculous Ladybug: S01E02: Have made no progress.

dhampyresa: (that's high profile)
I made two works for Trick or Treat! And I was very careful about not referring to them as fics, because one of them's only half fic.

The Revolution Will Be Illustrated (956 words) by sevenofspade
Chapters: 3/3
Fandom: Star Wars: Rebels
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Sabine Wren
Additional Tags: Mixed Media, Fanart, Fanfiction, Backstory, Character Study, Traditional Media, Digital Art
Summary: Sabine changes and her art changes with her.

According to the wishes of the artist, every piece is presented as it might have been at the time of its inception.

My assignment was [archiveofourown.org profile] shiningstar who requested both fic and art and ALL OF THE STAR WARS. I'm not sure which of the Star Wars we matched on, but it wasn't Rebels since I don't offer what I request.

Anyhow, my first thought was to write Sabine/Numa crackship femslash (although they have actually met and talked in canon so it's not that much of a crackship). I couldn't figure out how to make it work in the time that I had -- but now I know how to do it -- so I went with an idea I'd been vaguely thinking of before assignments went out.

Sabine is, canonically, an artist, so I wanted to do a character study through her art.

So I did! It's a combination of backstory (+ futurefic) and character study, with art. Sabine's an Imperial cadet turned bounty hunter turned Rebel by the time we meet her in canon. The fic is split in three parts: one at the Imperial Academy on Mandalore, another while she's a bounty hunter and one last one set after Return of the Jedi.

Fic-wise, I tried to reflect the dehumanising effect of the Empire by having names creep into the narrative as Sabine spends time away: first part has no names, second part has other people's names and last part has her name. You can see that in the in-story titling of the artwork too.

I mirrored that in the art by having colour creep into the pictures. First one's black and white (+ red), second one is blue monochrome (+ red) and the last one is in full colour. And now I'm going to talk more about said art.

Art babble + 3 pictures )

The title of the work is a reference to Gil Scott-Heron's The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.

It was really, really hard for me to give someone art as a gift, even with fic associated with it. I kept having to talk myself into it -- "It's not good enough!" "Self, the writing part alone is three times the minimum requirement! POST THE THING."

(Also while I was fiddling with it I managed to accidentally default on my assignment. *facepalm* I PM'd the exchange mod who gave me back the assignment -- but didn't tell me, so if I hadn't noticed will posting Out of the Cold that my assignment count had gone back up, I might have stayed defaulted.)

Filling my assignment took up a lot of time and brainspace, so I only made one treat for the exchange.

the ruin of the soul (669 words) by sevenofspade
Chapters: 1/1

Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Haggar (Voltron)
Additional Tags: Mad Science, ToT: Monster Mash
Summary: A day in the life of Haggar, mad scientist of the Galra Empire.

The title comes from François Rabelais' Pantagruel: "Science without conscience is but the ruin of the soul". And while "Science sans conscience n'est que ruine de l'âme" is a MASSIVELY famous quote in France, it sadly not so in English and suddenly I sound really pretentious quoting 16th century French authors? So I figured "in for a pretentious penny, in for a pretentious pound" and didn't capitalise the title at all. (*dodges pitchforks from the title police*)

I hesitated to tag Shiro in this, but Haggar doesn't consider him a person I went with not tagging him.

This fic also features all of my Voltron headcanons, except the one about Pidge being a K-drama protagonist an adult woman who is both short and can pass as a boy. To wit, it features the following: spoilers, I guess ). While writing it I also gave myself the headcanon that Haggar gave Shiro the white lock in his hair deliberately.

Idk, apparently my theme this ToT was "artists and their art". Both fics were betaed by the ever excellent chiiyo86, who I can finally credit now that author reveals are here.
dhampyresa: (Epic shit happening on the internet)

The princientist had been born into a royal family but had ambitions of her own: the project she happened to be working on just then was a time machine, for a rescue mission."

READING

What did you finish reading

2015

Sandman Overture by Neil Gaiman (scenario) and J. H. Williams III (art): Well, that is certainly a published comic book. I wanted to like this a lot more than I ended up actually liking it.

I didn't care for meeting the Endless' parents -- yeah, that's a thing now apparently. /does standard comics thing of "only canon that matters is canon I like"

The plot was pretty eh, overall, I have to say. Tbh, I always considered what happened immediately before Sandman to be best left unexplained, because any explanation was (a) not needed and (b) unlikely to live up. As it turns out, I was bright on both counts. I did like the call forward with "Hope", though.

The art is very pretty. Unfortunately, sometimes it's very pretty at the expanse of legibility.

So all in all, it's okay and made disappointing by the fact that I expected better.

Star Wars Rebels: S03E05:
THE LAST BATTLE OF THE CLONE WARS! Clone Trooper Captain Rex vs Super Tactical Droid Kalani, winner takes all.

SO I SHIP REX/KALANI NOW SORRY NOT SORRY the "old enemies who find common ground and respect each other" dynamic just hit me where I live, okay?

I am having ALL OF THE CLONE FEELINGS, seriously. Cody*! "Clone Order 66"! "A good soldier follows orders", Rex, noooooooooooooo!

I am so glad Rex didn't die. SO GLAD.

It may have been my monitor, or the lighting or whatever -- and I fully expect to be Jossed by the next episode -- but Sabine's hair looked blue and white to me in this ep and I'm going to headcanon it was because she dyed it that way to honour Rex (and if it's back to pink-ish newt ep, I may have to write fic about the fallout of Agamar, re: Rex).

* I cannot believe when the preview came out I thought "Oh hey they got Cody's voice actor back just for this scene, that's sweet". Self, Cody and Rex have THE SAME VOICE ACTOR.

Lucifer: S02E03, S02E04 and S02E05: I can't quite remember what happened when, so you get three for the price of one. I continue to enjoy this ridiculous show greatly. Character interactions are gold and I love how many of the characters are women (Dr Linda, Maze, Chloe, Ella, Mum, Trixie). Dr Linda was a phone sex operator, omg and then there was a bar fight. Lucifer and Dan geeking out over action movies were cute. I grow impatient about getting to see CHLOE AND MAZE ROOMATES HIJINKS. I'm kind of sad Uriel is gone already, for some reason I tend to like Uriel best in ~classic angelology~ and his power here was pretty cool. I do like that we got canon confirmation that angels can be female (Azrael/the angel of death is "she"). Faced with the lack of non-binary/ungendered angels, I'll take 'angels can be male or female, it's whatever'. Also, Tom Ellis does Righteous Fury really well.

Legends of Tomorrow: S2E02: Are we done with the Nazis yet? Like. Seriously. I know Timetravel To WW2 is a well-used trope, but are we done yet? One episode is pretty the price I agree to pay when I get into a timetravel show, twice is trying my patience. At least Sara leading the crew is now oofficial.

Class: S01E01 and S01E02: Well, that was unexpectedly violent. I thought this would be a kid's show! (I did not follow the promos at all.) And yet I was really charmed by all the characters, from super-smart Tanya to Ms Quill the freedom-fighter-turned-reluctant-teacher/bodyguard to April whose bravery comes from kindness.

Luke Cage: S1E07: No progress.

Nirvana in Fire: E06: Have made no progress.

Miraculous Ladybug: S01E02: This show gives REALLY GOOD PARIS, I have to say. To the point that, despite the fact that I was watching the English dib (my search for the Korean dub remains fruitless), I ended up thinking "Genre la meuf va au Troca pour trouver un pigeon. Genre!" ("Like the girl goes to the Trocadéro to find a pigeon. As if!") in French, which usually never happens -- I certainly didn't think in French while watching Legends of Tomorrow, even though it was nominally set in Paris this week. So ML gives great Paris, including aaaaaaaaaaaall the subtle social clues. Yikes. I think I went to school with some of those people. Adrien's social clues are unambiguous, but Marinette's are more confused. Then again, I'm only two episodes in.

Alina's neighbour disappeared while she was in Antarctica. He forgot his notebook.

This fic was almost about one of Anakin's illegal podracing buddies wondering wtf had happened to him -- but I didn't want her to know he was a Jedi and couldn't figure out how to make that work. So instead I took the basic concept of "bystander gets caught up in onscreen events and investigates what happened to a friend", Suoé became Alina and I wrote this. I may still keep the concept of "Star Wars fic in which everything is going great until, unfortunately Palpatine/Order 66 happens" or I may not.

I am also always there for fish out of water situation so everything dealing with Mum is gold. I have no idea what's going on with Amenadiel, but I don't like it. I continue to love Ella as a character -- she's a great foil to Lucifer. (I continue to ship Dr Linda and Maze.)

Legends of Tomorrow: S2E01: I did not expect this show to be back so soon! It was entertaining. I could have done without the new dude being, well, a dude, but alas.
This week they did the tried and true "Timetravel vs Nazis" episode. In an unlikely twist for the genre, the Nazis didn't win WW2 in that new timeline. I know I was suprised too. I appreciated that Stein was the most affected by this. Anyway, they win against the Nazis.
Also appreciated the physics nerding out and Mileva Marić getting her due credit.
Then they get scattered in time and space. I think that was supposed to be Arthurian times? Hey, non-Breton Arthurian folks, is it reasonable to assume something set in Tintagel 831 is meant to be Arthuriana?
It's cool that they haven't forgotten Sara's bisexual.

BOOM! CLONE FEELINGS.

I'm quite impressed the vidder managed to not jar me by switching between early Clone Wars, late Clone Wars (there's a definite shift in the animation about halfway through*) and even live action at one point.

* Late Clone Wars has my favourite animation of the Star Wars cartoons. It goes late Clone Wars > early Clone Wars > Rebels. Rebels is weirdly smoothed and streamlined, early Clone Wars is spiky. Late Clone Wars strikes a good balance. /CGI animation feelings

I have five Do Not Wants: incest, rape, child abuse, character death and dysphoria. When these are canon, please don't focus on them. I would also prefer not to have to deal with people losing things important to them and toxic living arrangements, be that family or roomates. Thank you.

I am captain Henri Villon and I will die soon.

No, don't smirk when reading that pretentious opening. Isn't it the last priviledge of the condemned to proclaim their death however they wish? It is my right. And if you don't grant it to me, then let us say I'm taking it.

That's how the story starts. Or ends, rather.

Le DĂ©chronologue is the story of Henri Villon, a pirate captain in the Carabbeans of the 17th century. The story is told in non-linear order, jumping from 1653 when those first lines in the prologue are penned to 1640 when the first chapter starts. From Villon on his futuristic timeship being blown up to Villon as pirate captain investigating maravillias is quite a jump, but it's not the story's greatest jump.

Every chapter begins by telling you when and where it's set, for example "Archipel inexploré de la Baja Mar (CIRCA 1652)" ('Unexplored archipelago of the Baja Mar (circa 1652)') a chapter which immediately follows "Désert du Yucatan (FIN DU TEMPS CONNU)" ('Yucatan Desert (END OF KNOWN TIME)').

That's right. We're travelling to THE END OF TIME. #YOLO

So that's the structure of the book. A book that jumps around in time, because it's a book about timetravellers fucking with the timeline and the tenacious pirate captain who decides to fuck back.

The entire book (excepting epilogue) is told via Villon's journal of the last 13 or so years of his life, written on the eve of the last battle (where he gets blown up in the prologue). Villon is uncompromising with his faults (or other people's), a right bastard at times, an honourable man more often, utterly devoted to his quest for knowledge about what the maravillias are and what they can do, moody, tenacious, with a sharp wit and sense of irony, stingy on backstory and, very importantly, a survivor of the Siege of La Rochelle.

Villon's not just French, he's a Protestant Huguenot -- you can imagine how much that endears him to the Catholic Spaniards chasing him.

That Villon is a survivor of the Siege of La Rochelle is one of the first thing we learn about him and it informs SIGNIFICANT parts of his characters. It may not look like it at first, but Villon is deeply self-hating, bordering at times on nihilism, and has massive issues regarding women and children. In fact, his very drive to figure out the maravilias is born of what he did/was complicit in the Siege of La Rochelle.

If you don't know what happened at the Siege of La Rochelle -- or you're like me and you learned about it in school and later you forgot -- it's eventually revealed in text what happened. It comes in the book after several ominous references to it -- Villon at one point has a very bad acid rip and hallucinates the screams of the children, that sort of thing -- and in the specific scene after he's been pushed about on both the fact that he's a Huguenot and that he researches the maravilias. This is what he has to say about it:

"I was there, me, at the siege of La Rochelle, in the name of faith and the Reformation. And I was one of those who drove out the weakest when famine was upon us, to win a little more time and keep the assieged able to fight. I saw and I heard them, those poor souls, banished on our orders, wander and die slowly every day a little more, trapped between our walls and the ranks of Richelieu's army who refused to let them through. And if it is the devil's work to promote ways to keep drink and food for years without risking that they'll rot, if it is the devil's work to produce light without flame, to heal the incurable and try to save your neighbour, then Satan is my master and I am his servant, and I piss on your stinky rat faces!

Like, wow, okay, Villon. OKAY. I understand perfectly, but at the same time, it is hilariously enough not the only time in the book where Villon calls himself Satan's servant/footman.

So that's Villon.

The book is populated with a very varied cast, from the nigh incomprehensible Féfé de Dieppe to the Baptist, who ends literally able to walk through time. Also Brieuc. I really like Brieuc, who is probably the kindest person in the entire book -- something Villon really admires (I ship them) -- and dies for his trouble. The most prominent of the secondary characters, however, are Sévère, Mendoza and Arcadio, all of whom are both interesting in their own right and have fascinating relationships to Villon.

Sévère is not her real name. She's a timetraveller who is no longer allowed to timetravel and so has to rely on Villon. Well. She doesn't HAVE to, but she does. Villon is madly in love with her, something he realises is a great weakness -- but he saved her and as I've said above, he has massive issues about not being able to sav women -- and it's something she finds... useful, I guess. She doesn't dislike him and she's not just using him, but she is using him and they both know it. She likes him, even, by her own admission but "not like that" and Villon respects that. He can't stop himself from hoping she'll love him back, but he respects that she doesn't.

Mendoza is a Spanish corsair. You can imagine how he (Catholic, Spanish, corsairr) feels towards Villon (Protestant, French, pirate) when they first meet. It does not go well! Mendoza basically tortures him and they remain hilariously polite towards each other. The next time they meet, Mendoza helps Villon escape from jail, sort of. Then Mendoza tries to go back to Spain CROSSES HIS OWN TIMESTREAM somehow survives with his sanity sort of intact and becomes Villon second-in-command as well as the owner of the journals we're reading. (I ship it.)

Arcadio is Villon's one-time cellmate who forms an unlikely friendship with him. The most important thing about Arcadio, though, is that he's a Maya. Specifically, he's an Itza from Noj Peten. As such he has a bone to pick with the Spanish Empire and the Itza having been granted, via the vagaries of timetravel bullshit affecting the world in the story, the means to fight back against the Spanish, they fight back. They fight back with gusto, because the Spanish Empire might be the Spanish Empire, but it doesn't hold a candle to machine guns and time cannons or even something as simple as easy long-distance communications via radios. The Itza are presented as entirely justified in wanting revenge from the Spanish -- by no means are Spanish atrocities glossed over, from the first chapter we are introduced to the idea that the Spanish have resorted to human experimentation to figure out the maravilias, including deliberately exposing captives to malaria -- but as time goes on Villon starts to see that the religious zeal of the Itza reminds him far too much of La Rochelle.

There is one more thing to talk about and it's THE FLYING DUTCHMAN. Spoilers, it's not actually the Flying Dutchman, it's actually AN AIRCRAFT CARRIER. Specifically, the USS George Washington.

Because see, while all the radios and boxes of quinine and machine guns and mp3 players and history books (lol forever at Villon's reaction to learning about Mary Read and Anne Bonny) and cheap IKEA furniture is being thrown back to the 17th century for anyone to grab, sell and use, so has a mysterious vessel that pirates and corsairs of the time alike decide to call the Flying Dutchman, because it is unlike anything they have ever seen both in firepower and mode of propulsion.

In the climax/end of the book, Villon and what's left of the all the fleets, pirate or not, of the time (plus some timetravelling pirates, like François le Clerc and SIR FRANCIS DRAKE, not even kidding), all go up against the Flying Dutchman. They have a plan. It's a great plan! But in the end they're 17th and 16th century pirates and they're going up against a fucking nuclear powered aircraft carrier.

They die. They all die. Including Villon, who told us so right there at the beginning and Sévère who dies in his arms before the ship gets blown up.

But.

But Villon's ship isn't just a 17th century pirate ship, is it? It's Le DĂ©chronologue, which has been equiped with time cannons by one of the various parties of time travellers fucking with the time stream. And so in the end, in what is for me one of the most striking images in the book, a flurry of time displaced DĂ©chronologues appear and then disappear through a tear in time, taking the Flying Dutchman with them.

We're told of this by Mendoza, who had been told to stay behind. Having met the Americanos during their short-lived alliance with the Spanish, it was decided he'd be best able to save the city if all else failed.

I won't say I'm not sad Villon died, because I am, but I was a fitting end and could have ended no other way. He tried so hard to convince everyone, even himself, that he wasn't a hero, but he was, in the end. And he was never going to let an injustice stand or let predetermination win out over free will.

(And now I shall go re-read the book in chronological order.)

APPROPRIATE ICON IS APPROPRIATE.
dhampyresa: (A most terrible case of the Star Wars)
Thank you for writing for me! I'm sure whatever you write me will be wonderful.

Feel free to poke around this journal or my Ao3 account (username: sevenofspade) if you want to. My letters tag is here.

I have three Do Not Wants: incest, rape and child abuse. When these are canon, please don't focus on them. I'd also prefer if you didn't dwell on any suicidal ideation or prolonged descriptions of grief. I would also prefer not to have to deal with people losing things important to them and toxic living arrangements, be that family or roomates. And no drownings, please. Thank you.

On the other hand, there are a lot of things I do want. Here’s a partial list. (I obviously don’t expect you to stick all of these in one story, that would be impossible.)

General likes )

Exchange specific DNWs: AUs not set in the Star Wars Universe (other times and/or places in the Star Wars universe are fine). My only exception to this are AUs set during the Second Punic War.

I'm requesting a bunch of aliens -- and human-looking people from a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away, so who's to say how human they are? -- please feel free to make them as alien as you want. Alien biology! Alien psychology! Alien cultures! Alien aliens!

Go ahead and mix-n-match prompts from various pairings or use prompts from one for another or go completely off-prompt if you want!

Ahsoka Tano/Asajj Ventress
Antagonistic femslash and/or post-s5 reluctant allies femslash. AU in which Ventress is a Jedi. Role-reversal AU -- Ventress as Anakin's apprentice, Ahsoka as Dooku's. Ventress and Fulcrum against the Empire!

Bo-Katan Kryze/Ahsoka Tano
Antagonistic femslash and/or post-s5 reluctant allies femslash. Siege of Mandalore! Someting about the mutual animosity between Jedi and Mandalorian as people could be very interesting. Ahsoka's capture by Death Watch lasts longer than it did in canon.

Bo-Katan Kryze/Rey
Time-travel! Or cryo-frozen Bo-Katan on one of the downed ships of Jakku. Jedi/Mandalorian tension! Bo-Katan teaching Rey how to fly WITH A JETPACK or how to fire a blaster. Sparring that turns into something more.

CT-7567 | Rex/Rey
TRAGICALLY SEPARATED BY ONE LETTER OF THE ALPHABET! Time-travel! Freshly Knighted Jedi Rey in the Clone Wars/that one Captain under someone else's command. Jedi Rex/weird orphan from a desert planet. Cryo-frozen Rex being unfrozen by Rey the scavenger.

Hera Syndulla/Maketh Tua
Canon-divergent AU where Tua makes it to the Rebellion. Hera seducing Tua for the Rebellion. Tua seducing Hera for the Empire. Those last two AT THE SAME TIME. Role reversal -- Tua leading the Rebel cell operating out of Ryloth.

Jango Fett/Mace Windu
So I know they tried to kill each other in canon (and one of them succeeded), idc. Hatesex! Role reversal AU! Jedi/Mandalorian tension. Maybe they have to go on a roadrip! Maybe Mace went to Kamino circa AotC instead of Obi-Wan.

Ketsu Onyo/Sabine Wren
A long time ago, we used to be friends! Antagonistic femslash or something softer post-Ketsu joining the Rebellion (how'd that happen, btw?). Sabine's art ~feelings~ on any of this. Sabine painting Ketsu's armour.

Leia Organa/Sabine Wren
Young ladies of the Rebellion! Or old ladies of the Resistance. Possibly penpals, either way (with little drawings for each other). Sabine helping Leia setting up the New Republic. Senator Wren/General Organa.

Obi-Wan Kenobi/Asajj Ventress
Pretty sure the entirety of Ventress' interactions with Obi-Wan throughout Clone Wars were one very long Dathomirian courtship ritual, tbh. Clone Wars era hatesex. Post Revenge of the Sith slightly less hate-y sex. Reluctant allies having to work together (again)!

Obi-Wan Kenobi/Darth Maul
Mindgames on Mandalore! AU in which Maul is a Jedi. AU in which Obi-Wan is a Sith. Role reversal AU. Canon-divergent AU in which Obi-Wan doesn't throw Maul down a reactor in TPM and captures him for the Jedi instead. More awkward team-ups with Jedi, à la Twilight of the Apprentice.

Phasma/Rey
Antagonistic femslash! Or "Rey is evil" AUs or "Phasma is a Resistance spy" AUs. Role reversal AUs -- Rey the Stormtrooper, Phasma the Jedi-in-training. Phasma finding Rey on Jakku. Phasma leading Rey's interrogation on Starkiller Base.

Rey/Aayla Secura
Time-travel! Actual Jedi KnightTM Aayla Secura teaching young upstart Rey (be that Jedi teachings or other things -- or both!). Cultural similarities and differences between Ryloth and Jakku and/or the Jedi Order and Luke's teaching.

Rey/Sabine Wren
Time-travel! Or not. No reason to assume Sabine isn't still around by Force Awakens. Rey dyeing Sabine's hair. Bonding over flying ships! AU in which they're contemporaries, either in Rey's time or Sabine's.

Riyo Chuchi/Ahsoka Tano
They are SO CUTE together, aww. More detective-y team-ups. Fall out from the bombing arc. Riyo being one of Fulcrum's contacts in the Senate -- or Fulcrum having to save the non-Human Sentors because, unfortunately, Palpatine.

Riyo Chuchi/Asajj Ventress
Kidnapping for ransom! Reluctant allies fighting against the Empire! AU in which Riyo is a Jedi! Or in which she's a Sith. Senator Asajj Ventress of Dathomir! (She would be a horrible Senator, it would be hilarious.)

Riyo Chuchi/CT-7567 | Rex
I would love something set after "Trespass" or during the Clone Wars or during the Empire era. Role-reversal in which the clone army is made of tiny Pantorans and Rex is Senator for Mandalore (or Kamino, not picky).

Slick/CT-7576 | Rex
Antagonistic clone-on-clone action (if post-betrayal reveal) or reluctant allies post Order 66 -- because what do you know, Slick made some valid points -- or even pre-betrayal (or betrayal reveal) shippy times.

Steela Gerrera/Ahsoka Tano
AU in which Steela survives. Maybe her brother dies instead, idk. Threesome resolution to the love triangle with Lux. Role reversal -- Jedi Steela helping Togruta insurgents! Secretly Force-sensitive Steela!

The Seventh Sister/Ahsoka Tano
Antagonistic femslash! The Seventh Sister seemed so happy to meet Ahsoka, it was weird. Weird/creepy Sith-> Jedi obsessive times! AU in which the Republic never fell and they're both Jedi! AU in which Maul recruits Ahsoka during the Siege of Mandalore and they're both Sith!

Thank you so much for writing for me!

(Comments welcome.)

dhampyresa: (A most terrible case of the Star Wars)
I consider the movies and both the Clone Wars and Rebels cartoon -- ie, the visual media -- the extent of Star Wars canon.

Not because I have anything against the wider Star Wars EU, but because the Star Wars EU has something against me. That is, I'm a completionist and if I ever was to start going down the rabbit hole of "the Star Wars EU is canon" then I'd have to consume all of it and I would get nothing else done.

I'm not saying I won't read any Star Wars EU, but it's basically fic to me. People are free to have wider or more resticted views of canon than me, so long as they let me know where they stand -- I will read movies-only-compliant fic and entire-EU-compliant fic.

Also, I don't care about Qui-Gon and as far as I can tell he plays a substantial role in more than one book. I just really really don't care about him.

Also also, I've read a fair amount of fic in which the all clones are totally onboard with/consider themselves part of Mandalorian culture and apparently that's based in the EU? Which. Hm. How do I put this. I don't think that's likely. I don't mind some of the clones -- or even most -- trying to connect to their heritage, but all of them? No. Especially since Clone Wars goes to such great lengths to make all the clones into individuals. Look. Culture and identity and how people relate to both of these is complicated and I think making all the clones react to them the same way is robbing them of their individuality. They're not numbers, they're free men! They're going to relate to Mandalore as individuals.

On a completely different note, I never get tired of explaining to people that Darth Maul is still alive! And he is so entertaining. He's such an asshole, but I love him so much.

What did you finish reading

My old list:

A list )
I read a bunch of stuff since then, I think, but my last reading wednesday was back in July so all I know for sure is that I finished Grass King's Concubine and it was GREAT. /adds to list

Why do I still have stuff from 2015 on this list. WHY.

What are you reading now

Le Déchronologue by Stéphane Beauverger: I'm still a chapter and a half from the end of the book. My plans to nominate and request this for yuletide are no longer happening. I have to say that unless something completely unexpected happens I still expect to reread the book right after I'm done, except in chronological order this time. (Book is non-linear.)

Partial list of comics I am following and/or haven't caught up with, which I will add to as I remember them:

General likes )

I requested both Trick and Treat for everything, so feel free to take prompts in whichever direction you like! And if none of my prompts work for you, then write whatever you want -- I'll be happy with anything. Crossovers between any of my requested fandoms are welcome.

Ancient History RPF (Hannibal Barca, Scipio Africanus)

(Relevant tag.)

I ship them super hard, but I would also be delighted by gen about them, either together or separately. I would welcome both serious (alternate) history-based stuff and silly trope-based stuff. Maybe Hannibal takes Rome! Maybe Carthage won the First Punic War! Maybe they both fall into a dimensional rift and end up accidentally travelling through time and space! Maybe it is in fact a Pun-ic war (I LIKE PUNS)! Maybe they have to get married For Reasons!

For Hannibal-only prompts, I'd love anything about his relationship with Carthage. Anything involving female members of his family and/or Tanith and/or Dido would be amazing! I also really like his friendship with Maharbal.

Scipio wise, I would love something about his relationship with his daughter or his relationship his wife (and hey, if you want to write Aemilia/Scipio/Hannibal, I'm sure not saying no).

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood & Manga (Greed (Brotherhood/Manga), Scar (Brotherhood/Manga), Winry Rockbell (Brotherhood/Manga) )

I don't actually ship Ed/Winry, but other than that I don't really have any FMA ship feelings, so feel free to write whatever. Including any combination of my requested characters. Greed/Scar? Sure! Scar/Winry? Okay! Winry/Greed? Bring it on! Hell, even Greed/Scar/Winry, I'm down with.

I'm fascinated by the Greed/Ling relationship and how it poses the question of what it means to be human. So anything about that would be aces. Maybe a fix-it for the ending? That said, I also really like the first Greed and would love fic about him too. Canon-divergent AU where he becomes friends with Izumi?

The Scar + Mei + Marcoh (with occasional guest star Winry Rockbell) is my favourite part of FMA. No lie, the relationship between Scar and Winry is the most interesting one in all of FMA to me, because it's so complex and heartbreaking and yet heartwarming. But I also really like that Scar is a loner AND YET he somehow ends up with a gaggle of people following him around. I would absolutely love anything about Scar and Ishval, be that before, during or after canon.

How much do I love that Winry is a gearhead? A LOT. It's honestly my favourite thing about her. That and how kind she is. I would love stories about her and automail and I kind of low-key ship her and Paninya. Like I said above, the relationship between her and Scar is fascinating to me and anything about that would be amazing. I'd also love anything about Winry and Pinako and/or Winry and her parents' legacy. Or even her weird whatever-that-was with Kimblee or her friendship with Riza!

Locke & Key (Dodge (Locke & Key), Kinsey Locke)

(Relevant tag.)

I kind of ship these two in a fucked up way, but also I kind of ship Zack/Tyler and Kinsey/Jackie. Okay, I really ship Kinsey/Jackie. Anyway, I think the relationship between Kinsey and Dodge is amazingly twisted and super interesting.

I will forever find it hilarious that Dodge is AN ELDRITCH ABOMINATION FROM BEYOND LOVECRAFT. And yet his ultimate goal is to get a family of sorts? Poor Dodge. (Poor Luke, too.) I would totally be up for an AU in which Dodge won. Or an AU in which he got therapy.

Kinsey is THE BEST. I really love her adventures with Jackie, Jamal and Scot, so if you want to write an AU where they're deep-space explorers or something, go for it! (I'd prefer no focus on her relationship with her mother. Thank you.) Also, I would really love the AU where she allies with/befriends Jordan (do I ship them? Hell yes). ALSO therapy. So much therapy. Possibly with the help of the Head Key.

Star Wars: Rebels (Sabine Wren)

I love how important to Sabine art is and would love something about that. In the episode with Lando, they both recognise that her work has specific influences and I would love to hear about how she picked those and how she feels about those artists. I ship her with Ketsu, but not Ezra or Hera -- speaking of which, I see them as having more of a younger sister/older sister relationship, not daughter/mother. I would also love to see Sabine and Rex interact, maybe they bond over art or Mandalore or EXPLOSIONS! (Also, I love her -explosions-are-art attitude.) In the S1 finale, I really liked the glimpse of the relationship she has with the Lothal Stormtroopers -- they call her 'Artist'! How cute is that? And that one Stormtrooper liking her TIE paint job, aw.

EDIT: I will most likely be up-to-date on Rebels S3 by reveals, but even if not I have already sean all of seasons 1 and 2 and don't mind spoilers. That said, also feel free to set your fic pre-S3 or in the far fututr or in a canon-divergent AU.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Ahsoka Tano (Clone Wars), CT-7567 | Rex (Clone Wars), Riyo Chuchi (The Clone Wars) )

Ship-wise, I'm cool with any combination of the above, as long as Ahsoka is no longer underage. I don't ship mentor/mentee ships, but aside from that, go wild! But I would also love any of those as a platonic relationship.

Ahoska and Ventress interacting is a joy to me so anything with those two would be great. I also really enjoy Ahsoka and Riyo's friendship and her relationship with Anakin and Rex (together and separately). I would 100% love the fic about Ahsoka's roadtrip post-leaving the Jedi, including potentially awkward team-ups, like Maul or Bo-Katan.

Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeex. I feel so bad for him and all the clones for, like, everything. Somebody give this man a hug. Especially post-Umbara, because man it is a crying shame we never saw any fall out from that. Or a post-Kadavo hug. Just. Basically all the hugs? Or something where he gets to be happy, because he smiles like TWICE in the entire show.

Riyo is my favourite minor character from Clone Wars. She's only got speaking parts in two episodes, but I really like her character arc and her friendship with Ahsoka and how kind she is. I also happen to enjoy the politics of Star Wars, so if you want to have her team-up with Padmé and/or Satine and/or Mon Mothma FOR GREAT JUSTICE, I am entirely up for that.

Voltron: Legendary Defender (Haggar (Legendary Defender), Pidge | Katie Holt, Shiro (Legendary Defender) )

I am totally down with any ship combination of these three, as long as no one's underage. Gen is of course always welcome.

Haggar is basically a mad scientist IN SPACE. WITH MAGIC. Which is totally my jam. I have a real thing for the intersection of magic and science. I'd also love to hear more about her relationship with Zarkon and/or Shiro. There's great hilarious mileage to be had out of Haggar having to master shape-shifting into Shiro (for... reasons...?).

Speaking of mad scientists! PIdge is basically one step away from being a mad scientist herself. I would love anything about her and SCIENCE. Maybe her and Shiro bonding while she tries to fix his metal arm? Or her and Hunk being Science Bros! Or her trying to explain peanut butter to Allura. Also, as a short person, I like to think Pidge is an adult who just happens to be short.

Shiro! Poor dude! He also needs a hug. I really like the metal arm and I would love fic where it develops weirder and weirder powers. Also, I would love to know how he manages to keep his eyeliner so on point all the fucking time. Like. HOW. How did he escape the Galra? What about a canon-divergent AU where he didn't? Shiro/evil!Shiro would be fascinating.

Thank you again for writing for me! I'm sure any you write will be wonderful and I look forward to reading it.

Comments welcome!

dhampyresa: (Gwen Stacy)
I've never actually had to post an evidence post for a fandom in yuletide, but this year I'm posting two! Tagging this 'fannish landmark' and using my Gwen Stacy icon, idc.

Gwen Variants (Marvel Comics Covers) )

Secret Wars (Hickman/Ribić 2015 mini-series) )

You will be very surprised to learn that my third nom is Hannibal Barca and Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus Maior, under "Punic Wars RPF".
dhampyresa: (This is my life)
I forgot I should do a reading Wednesday post yesterday. Oops. To be fair, I am kind of still trying to put coherent thoughts to my feelings on Grass King's Concubine and Le Déchronologue.

Have tings I have recently watched, instead.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

I have SO MUCH FEELINGS. This might be because [livejournal.com profile] lunik_the_bard and I watched the entire back half in under a day and a half. It was. Huh. IT WAS INTENSE. (And possibly I talked too much and was a terrible houseguest. I'm sorry, Lunik.)

I'd read the whole manga before, but for some reason I'd forgotten (almost) everything about the Promised Day onwards.

My favourite characters are Scar, Winry (omg the Scar & Winry relationship is my favourite thing) and Ling/Greed. Greeling? THAT GUY. You know the one.

Voltron: Legendary Defender

Then I got home and basically inhaled all of the new (?) Voltron series. I need to stop watching things so fast, it's not great for me,  I can't connect to characters.

So basically my feelings right now boil down to LOOK AT THESE NERDS IN A ROBOT with bonus of Pidge, Shiro and Haggar being (unsurprisingly) my favourites. Science-y one, cyborg-y one* and witch-y one. Yup, I am predictable. I really like Allura a lot too! She tosses Shiro around like a sack of potatoes it's great.

I think I'd still rec both of those, in completely different ways. FMA is a lot darker and intense but very intricately plotted. Voltron has nerds in a castleship and Shiro's eyeliner.

Anyway. Talk to me?

* I will just say that if you want to rec me a piece of visual media and the words METAL ARM apply, use those words.

dhampyresa: (A most terrible case of the Star Wars)
I have returned and have posted fic.

Six fics, some I posted a while back and forgot to talk about here (first two), two I posted before travelling but stuck into the Anonymous collection until now (next two) and two I just posted, because I just titled/finished them (last two).

The Once and Future Camelot (The It's Only A Model Remix) (1186 words) by sevenofspade
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Demon Knights
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Madame Xanadu (Demon Knights), Merlin (Demon Knights), Sir Ystin | Shining Knight (Demon Knights)
Additional Tags: Future Fic, IN SPACE!
Summary:

This is a very different Camelot, with spaceships and science and technology the world has never seen.

Xanadu seeks out Merlin.
My fic for [community profile] femmeremix . By sheer coincidence, I had just found this fic a few days before assignments went out. Clearly this was A Sign. The italicised line in the summary is from the original fic and it's such a great image I had to something with it.

Demon Knights actually one of the few Anglophone canons that has a proper Merlin and the fact that he's canonically demonspawn and ages backwards in it is part of why. The bit about him not having a soul now that he's under seven is based on a sort of obscure bit of French folklore than holds the seventh birthday as when children acquire a soul.

DEFCON 3 (1530 words) by sevenofspade
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Natasha Romanov
Summary: Natasha hunted HYDRA to Miami. She wasn't the only one.
The fic I wrote for [personal profile] muccamukk 's MCU Rolling Remix challenge. The challenge was great fun! I wish I'd had time to go through the fics thoroughly while they were still anon, but alas.

The Crack of Ice (3046 words) by sevenofspade
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America (Movies)
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: James "Bucky" Barnes/Steve Rogers
Characters: Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanov, Wanda Maximoff
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Avatar & Benders Setting
Summary: Steve's identity as the Avatar was a closely guarded secret. Yet trouble still had a way of finding him.
True story: This fic has literally been finished since JANUARY 2016. It just took me fucking ages to find a title for it.

Five people on StarKiller Base who didn't listen to Anakin Skywalker (and one who did) (3235 words) by sevenofspade
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Star Wars - All Media Types, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Anakin Skywalker, Ensemble (The Force Awakens), Obi-Wan Kenobi
Additional Tags: Force Ghosts
Summary: Being a ghost, Anakin thought, was very frustrating.
This fic first suffered Severe Tone Shift Syndrome when Obi-Wan showed up (did you know him and Anakin have issues?), then spent months being literally ten sentences from being done which was incredibly frustrating, but I finally made it work.

And now, sleep.
dhampyresa: (This is my life)
I did my bit, everything else is out of my hands. AND NOW I CAN DO SOMETHING ELSE -- if at all possible, I am not spending (almost) every waking moment focused on a thing because then I end up dreaming of the thing at night too and NOPE.

Anyway, I have some stuff left to do before I leave for Great Britain. Like, idk, making sure I have somewhere to sleep that isn't the underside of a bridge or that I have some way to return that isn't "swim across the Channel!".

On the fandom-y side of things, I need to change the rules for History Exchange -- to my shame there is a grievous oversight there and I need to fix it and check if I need to change the rules for NoFM too -- and reveal the collection once that's done. I also have a fic I'd like to finish before I leave, which will probably be finished -- hell, maybe even two if I ever figure out how to finish that one fic about the ghost of Anakin Skywalker on Starkiller base.

Speaking of Star Wars! And Great Britain! And various other Earth-bound locations! I have decided I'll refer to places I travel to by the names of Star Wars planets, because why not. So I live in Coruscant, travel regularly to Ahch-To to Tatooine and spend several months on each of Alderaan and Pantora.

Point being. In that frame of reference, what do I call Great Britain? Or even places within Great Britain? Or any other location? (This can be very specific or vague -- I mean, Coruscant, Ahch-To and Tatooine are all in the same country.)

dhampyresa: (Quit killing people)
The collection is live! And the fic I got is amazing!
